Nothing on the Troughton doc last night?

I enjoyed it, i just don't think 25 minutes is enough though. Jamie and Zoey were on. Apparently Tennant and Barrowman are huge fans (i knew Tennat was) as they seemed to know all about both dr's covered so far and get so excited talking about it :)

I never knew Matt Smith based so much of 11 on Troughton. Watching the reairing of Tomb of the Daleks last night just made it so clearly obvious. Was so happy they chose tomb of the daleks, too. I was worried they were going to do Ice Warriors. I some love the IW, but i can't stand them. I mean, who runs away from creatures that can't even walk at a normal speed? :)

I haven't seen the doc yet. Must do that soon.

I thought the Ice Warriors were brilliant in their first appearance. Not so much in subsequent ones but still, I like em. :)
 
Due to some fortuitous circumstances I've been watching classic Who from the beginning for the last few months. Currently most of the way through Pertwee, and he's not a patch on Troughton. Took a while to warm to Doc 2, but I think that's partly 'cos a lot of his episodes are missing and the audio+telesnaps don't really convey Troughton's clowning and "Oh my giddy aunt"-ing as well.
Liked Pertwee in Curse of Peladon But that's because he's finally away from a)Earth b)Unit and c)The Master. Was beginning to think Doc 3 was more like The Man from Uncle. Sadly for Pertwee, watching The Three Doctors just reminded me how much more... character and fun there was to Troughton.

Tomb of the Cybermen. At least, I didn't see a single Dalek last night :)

That was my time actually seeing a 2nd serial. I really liked Troughton. 60's costuming aside for the Cybermen it actually held up pretty well I thought. The production values didn't take me out of it at least the same as every Tom Baker story I've seen have.

I'd been aware of Smith's favorite Doctor being Two, but hadn't heard the story re: Tomb of the Cybermen before. That was a great story to hear before they played the episode to get it added relevance to fans who only came to Who during the relaunch.
 
I kind wish the documentary's picked up things like 'Timelord' wasn't used until Troughton's final story War Games. Do a bit on the evolution of the character. They did pick up that he was the first one to give his age as 450 earth years in Tomb of the Cybermen.

Well, with the rest of "series Seven" coming in a few weeks. (Still pissed that we got robbed of ANOTHER full series this year) I find that I am not as excited as I have been for it to come back. It's not because of Matt, I thinks he's a fabulous Doctor. But the trailer left me saying.... M eh!

I could not care less about anyone than I do Clara. The "Who is she really?" mystery is not engaging to me. I think I am already sick of her!

The complete lack of a proper series this year (Again ALL of series seven should have been in 2012) has me bummed.

Yes, this is a special year! The big 50 for The Doctor. But to have 13 episodes CUT from the production and give is ONE lousy 60 minute special.....well, I wish they would have just given us a proper 13 episode series and leave it at that!
 
Well, it's hard to get into a mystery when you get one episode of it in August which you just think is a teaser an not a mystery, then another ep 4 months later which tells you it is a mystery, and then the mystery doesn't begin for another 3.5 months after that.

It may be a great mystery, but the timing blows. As long as they stick to their established precedent of not going out on a cliff hanger, hopefully it's OK, because it seems as if there's only 1 normal length episode for the 50th....meaning an entire year with maybe 3 eps - not a good thing.
 
Agreed. I'm not really into it this year and I know I should be. :unsure

I'm tired of these significant companions. Traveling with the Doctor makes you significant, you don't need to be the love of his life, or the mother of a Time Lord, or a guy that waited for 2000 years, or some spacial anomaly that transcends time and space...
 
You can also look at it as them trying to do something different. The original series had no real significant companion in those regards. Closest would be Romana since she was a timelord (timelady?).

Anyhow, rose began as a normal companion then it was something else with 10. Rose and 10 possibly liking each other was a new thing. Hadn't happened before. Again, Martha liking him and him not seeing it since he wasn't over Rose, something not done before. I didn't see donna as anything special. Then the ponds becoming such great friends of his is also something new and i don't know that it was something planned from the start.

We don't know how Oswin is special - yet.

However, i think the point can be made that trying to do something different is starting to get old and that a few normal companions are in order. And ones that can't fly the damned tardis by their 3rd appearance. I'd like to see companions LEARN about the places they go to (or make them alien and learn about earth). Learn from their travels etc and grow as people. They don't need to be made special - they should earn it from the fanbase not from the script.

Agree with Martha, but Donna became half Timelord and had her one choice affect the entire universe.

For me you need a whole lot of normal to be able to appreciate the great ones or the special relationships and it's gotten too much. This is the Doctor's story, we're just tagging along.

There have been precious few greats & strong relationships in the long run of the series. Susan to start, Jamey, Liz (brief but memorable and different), Sarah-Jane, Adric (memorable in how he departed), Rose (IF she had stayed gone. Unfortunately they dilluted her).

No other companions have made a bond so strong to the Doctor's core but they keep acting like every new companion is so special. It gets old.

Bring the special ones around every 3-4 seasons.
