General Doctor Whoniverse Discussion

I heard about this. Why this particular planet, btw?
I think because it is a huge anomaly. It's about 11 times as massive as jupiter and orbits its host star at 650 times the distance between the earth and the sun (which is the largest known planetary orbit). Its also quite young at 13 million years old (the earth is 4.5 billion years old. Probably the biggest reason is that they have no clue how it could have formed so far away from its host star. So the Doctor must've put it there! ;)

That's my view anyway!

Moffat is quite capable of writing very good stuff. He just seems more intent on stamping his personality not only on the new series but the old series and DW lore as well. I've never liked Smith's portrayal, but I actually felt sorry for him in this last episode as Moffat seemed more intent upon tying up loose ends quickly and moving on to the next Doctor whilst addressing the regeneration limit than anything else. Smith went out with a whimper rather than a bang, well actually, it was less than a whimper. More of a blink.

I totally agree, he has done some great stuff,...but recently (apart from the 50th show/movie) it just hasn't been great, tonight should have been a great memorable exit for Smith, but it was a complete embarrassment
I'll stick with the show to see how Capaldi gets on, but hopefully there'll be a return to the heights do the RTD era, if you go back and watch them on Netflix it makes you appreciate how good they where

I hope that now Moffat is writing for an older character, he will go back to a less jokey and immature Doctor. I also hope he leaves his ego behind now he has stamped it so far into every area of the series. He wrote Hurt's Doctor very well. So I hope, I hope, I hope....

Moffatt should have gone with Smith. He seems bored and out of ideas, his world building is small and claustrophobic and circular.

I thought Smith should have regenerated on the tower, then Capaldi kicks the daleks asses and quips, 'What the hell was all that about?' :)

Having him 'reset' as his young version to do the big speech and Amy Pond bit was almost as much of a pulled punch as the 'saving Gallifrey' part inserted after the three Doctors have decided to bear its destruction together in Day of the Doctor.

After all the crap Davies got for the sentimentality of End of Time, Moffat pretty much pulled the same trick.

Why didn't the Time Lords just have a mass regeneration during the Time War and destroy the Daleks like that if it was so easy. What utter drivel DW has become.

Why even bump Capaldi up to 14? Just so Moffat could make another mythology notch on his bedpost, I guess.

Basicly disappointed with the Christmas special , and I had so looked forward to it . Good ideas , badly implemented , in my opinion .

Posted in the other thread but ya, pretty weak exit IMHO.

My biggest beef is that we JUST found out that Gallifrey is still out there... And now it's a major plot point already? Let it breathe man! I groaned when I saw the crack as I wasn't a fan of it when it was originally the story arc.

I was a huge fan of the 50th and I was hoping for a strong follow up. Was pretty disappointed.

Anyhow, bring on Capaldi!

I was happy to see the crack and happy they finally explained all of the plot holes they left wide open since Moffat took over, even if they did do it in the form of random brief side- notes to Clara. Matt's first old age makeup was pretty bad, the really old makeup wasn't so bad. I can see why they made him young again, it was for Smith so that his last words wouldn't be senile ranting, but it was bad for the story and the pacing. Capaldi didn't hook me as well as Smith did in his first scene, in fact he shouted out his first line so quickly and so Scottish I didn't even catch it.

The other thing is, now the whole Universe knows Gallifrey has survived and the Time Lords are out there. Kinda defeats the object of Day of the Doctor doesn't it? Surely the Time war will just kick off again now and the Daleks will be on the rampage.

I don't see how.

I'm sure the return of the mad Time Lords, the return of the Master, the continuation of the Time War and the vengeance of the Daleks are all things the Doctor will consider when he decides to bring them back.

Yes, but now the Daleks and the whole Universe know the Time Lords survived. The whole point of the Day of the Doctor was to fool the Daleks and everyone else, including himself, that the Time Lords were destroyed. And then there is the High Council to deal with. But these issues have been swept under the carpet if the read through is anything to go by.

... er... apparently :lol
