Galaxys Edge

I'm 2.5 hours away from WDW. My family an I have not been for 2.5 years. We used to go all the time but life got complicated and we also wanted to wait for Galaxy's Edge to open and maybe the newness to die down. The hope was for this Spring... but you know.

I'm going to love it. There is no doubt about it. My wife already gets ticked with me because I spend more time than she wants to at Star Tours and Cargo Bay.

I had a great time, my daughter and I look forward to being able to go back again. I went in to enjoy Star Wars, and that’s exactly what I got.

It was a fully immersive Star Wars experience. I don’t need to have a particular theme in order to appreciate and enjoy it.

I’m not the type of guy that looks at a moisture vaporator and says there’s only seven bolts along its axis when there should be eight!

I thought the ride was fantastic! Being able to sit in the pilot seat of the millennium falcon and steer it while my daughter put into hyperdrive was an amazing experience for the both of us.

My only disappointment was in the fact that a lot of the trinkets I was interested in buying were sold out at the time that I went. However if I wanted to jump on eBay and pay five times the amount I guess I could have!

It was Star Wars in every way! What is the harm in going to a planet that we have never visited before in the galaxy? I can’t see any!

The parks are closed so nobody is there. Cant blame covid for cast shortage when nobody is there to see anything. I went well before covid and noticed a complete and total absense of troopers.

But it sounds like there is a divide between sequel haters and those who embrace star wars for all parts good or not so good.
We cant change thier minds as much as they cant change ours.
"Haters gonna hate"

Even in a pile of horse poop, there may be a seed that springs new life!

Edit; adding the following comments, I better not see that posted online unless I’m giving credit for that! LOL

When we went, there were a couple of troopers and I told him my daughter was a rebel spy and they hassled her for a little bit. She’s 20 but was still embarrassed by her dad! LOL.

I understand from the actors point of view as well. Anaheim, while not being excessively hot per se, does get pretty humid. The actors can’t be in those costumes for much more than an hour or so at a time. They probably don’t have a huge wave after wave to pull from keep sending out more costumers to interact at the parks.

Right there with ya!
I am 2 hours from Disneyland and my family had not been in about 3 years. We decided it was time especially since reports of disneyland being empty because everyone though star wars was going to over-crowd... Because of that it was the opposite so we jumped on the chance before word got out to people not local to make travel plans.
Got a hotel accross the street (howard Johnson was great btw) and despite strong warnings from my wife "we arent spending all 3 days at the star wars" (she supports me but doesnt understand lol)
I was able to get my fix a couple hours at a time but not long enough to ride the falcon.
Went back a second time and again a hotel. Wife supports me so much when we went back to the room to put our 1 yr old to sleep she said "I will stay with him so you can take the twins (11 yrs) back and ride the falcon."
WOOHOOOO!!!
so when this covid thing dies off (if it ever does) we will go and ride the new ride and probably build a droid. Our little guy is 19 months now and LOVES my old interactive R2. I think whatever we end up building will be his.

Yep I dont know how chewie does it.
In fact he was headed back and I went to high five him and he totally left me hanging. My son got it on video and I was so sad.
But he was probably in a rush to get out of that suit. I dont blame him at all. Record heat wave that weekend.

If your mind was made up beforehand that it was going to be bad, you did not have a “open mind” when you were there.

Exactly. Going in with your mind made up that it was going to be bad....is literally the opposite of going in with an open mind.

I really don't understand how somebody could think it's generic. There is Star Wars all over the place. Having it not be a place we've seen in a movie before gives them more creative freedom. I have a feeling the people who complain about it wouldn't have been happy with anything we got because if it was Tatooine it should have been Hoth, if it's Hoth it should have been Endor. You can't please everybody I suppose.

I also dressed up when I went and really enjoyed it. We were only planning on spending a day there, but we ended up spending two and then going back for EMH the last morning we were there just to see the Falcon one last time.

It's generic in the most true sense possible. Literally just generic rocks and plain buildings. It'd be like building a Harry Potter world in a place not seen in the movies. It doesn't make any sense. I wouldn't be happy because it's just so..bad.

So just because it wasn't in a movie it's generic? You're saying it could easily be confused with another franchise?

It has door panels like in Star Wars, there are droids and droid tracks all over the place, like in Star Wars, there are moisture evaporators and antennas.....from Star Wars....there are land speeders out, there is a dianoga, there is audio of ships flying over and alien chatter, there's aurebesh...there are helmets, and blasters, and armor, and gear hidden throughout, there are multiple space ships...I don't see how anybody could walk in there and think it's anything other than Star Wars...

Anyway, I'm going to stop here because this thread was just supposed to be the search for a list of the shops and items available for sale there and not a thread to, "say what a disappointment that place was."

No I'm saying it's generic because it's literally generic.

What a disappointment that place was.

Well there really wasn't a pandemic when I went.

"vi moradi" sooooo does not count either.

We had more fun at launch bay every time we've gone to Disneyland. Meeting Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and Boba Fett is fun. Even meeting Rey was fun even though I don't count the sequels at all anymore.

I would ABSOLUTELY still be disappointed because it was based on the sequels. It's just so shortsighted. What are they going to do in ten years when everyone has forgotten about the sequels?

batuu is extreeeemely generic. It is literally just a bunch of rocky mountains and generic store fronts and hut like buildings.

Yes I did notice it and I do like being in the Millennium Falcon, but we all just thought the ride totally sucked.

Well yes I did already make my mind up before hand that it was going to be really bad, and when I got there, it was worse than I expected. I went in with an open mind regardless.

I mean it wasn't even so much that it was based on the sequels so much as that it was completely LACKING Star Wars all together.

Like if there were a Pirates of the Caribbean LAND and it were set in New York City..that wouldn't make much sense right?
Shortsighted? Not really. It's Disney's property and they can expand on it as much as they want to. Yes, I do prefer the Original Trilogy, but I can see why they themed it around the sequels. It gives them much more freedom to work and makes it easier to create new stories rather than being constrained to a certain period. I would have liked to have seen more OT things, sure, and it would have been fun to be able to walk around a portion of an OT planet, but I thought that Disney did wonderfully with what they did. No Star Wars fan is going to be forgetting about the sequels so Disney is safe there.

As for it being "generic", when you put it that way any planet is going to be "generic". Tatooine would be nothing but sand and stucco buildings. Hoth would be nothing but snow and ice. Kashyyyk would be nothing but trees and huts. Naboo would be nothing but art deco buildings and brick roads. Corellia would be nothing but industrial buildings and pavement. Considering the amount of space they had to work with in the parks they couldn't make an entire planet with different regions and climates, they had to design one section of the planet, one city, and that's what they did. And there are very different areas in Black Spire Outpost. The First Order area is much more high-tech while the Resistance side is more void of technology, it has more grass and trees, more rustic architecture and the like, and the shopping area is a mix of the two. That's more diverse than you would see in most real-life cities. Black Spire Outpost isn't supposed to represent the entire planet, it's simply one tiny piece of it.

If you made up your mind about Galaxy's Edge before going there then you didn't go in with an open mind. Making up your mind is the complete opposite of having an open mind. You convinced yourself that you weren't going to have fun there so you didn't have fun there, you convinced yourself that it would be terrible so in the end it did seem terrible to you. The fact that you didn't enjoy Galaxy's Edge isn't Disney's fault... it's yours. You didn't want to enjoy it so you didn't.

And I'm curious, how was Galaxy's Edge lacking Star Wars? What would you have done to make it more "Star Wars" other than having plunked somewhere during the Original Trilogy and on some OT planet? There is Star Wars filling every nook and cranny of Galaxy's Edge. There are droids everywhere, alien characters in shops, landspeeders and speederbikes parked around the area, all sorts of themed goodies in the stores, the cantina oozes Star Wars, there is themed food, you can buy blue milk, you can build a friggin' lightsaber, and if you listen closely it sounds like there are ships flying overhead. Even the tools in Hando's garage look like they belong in the universe. How is that lacking Star Wars?

There's nowhere to expand it. They saw a part of the franchise that was hot for a minute, next to a bigger part of the franchise that's been hot for 40 years. They went with the former. That's nearsighted af.

It's funny how many people have made the comment about open mind. Who cares? I thought the whole park sucked either way. So did a lot of people. There was nothing that was going to save that park for me. It's 100% Disney's fault.

There was no Star Wars in the supposed Star Wars land.

Hah, I'm planning on moving to Florida myself. I was planning on moving in June... until the virus hit and put my plans on hold for who knows how long. Blah. I've been planning on moving to Davenport or an area near there-- gotta be close to Disney World, y'know!

And that explains it all right there. If you thought the entire Disney park was terrible then, well, you wouldn't find anything at all enjoyable there. It sounds like theme parks just aren't your thing, and they're certainly not for everyone, I myself have met people that didn't have fun at Disneyland or Disney World (even if I can't possibly figure out how you couldn't have fun there, but to each their own)... But there are millions of people who do love the Disney parks, as has been proven for decades, so the parks are definitely safe in that regard. Theme parks just aren't for you and there isn't anything wrong with that... But again, that's not the park's fault, that's your own fault. No theme park can convince you that it's a fun place to be, you have to make that decision all on your own.

Having an open mind is an important thing because if you go into something with an open mind then you can experience that thing without any preconceived notions of it-- you might end up liking that thing, or you might not, but you would never know without an open mind. How can you possibly enjoy something if you go in with the attitude that it's going to be terrible? If you go to watch a movie after having convinced yourself that it's going to be a terrible movie then it's going to be a terrible movie for you. If you're given a new food to try but you've already made up your mind that you're not going to like it, then when you do try the food you're not going to like it because you've already convinced yourself that you're not. If you go to a theme park already convinced that you're not going to have any fun there then guess what? You're not going to have any fun there. It's all about your attitude and how you go in to new things.

Keeping an open mind leads you to new experiences and to new possibilities, and to things that you never would have guessed that you would have liked. If you had went into Galaxy's Edge without already convincing yourself that it was going to be bad, if you had gone in with an open mind, then things could have been very different. You may have still disliked it, sure, but you also might have liked it after all. You did yourself a disservice by closing your mind to the possibility that you might actually have fun there and by not giving it a chance.

I was talking about galaxy's edge = the park. Not Disneyland. I love Disneyland. We just don't agree, nothing wrong with that. Like I said I had an open mind but y'all don't believe me.

i went there for my brothers 40th birthday, our whole family stayed in florida for a week (uk based for me) this is before the new ride opened. im 46 and a massive star wars fan. ive never been to a disney park before ever and being from the uk, mickey mouse was not really a large part of my upbringing (bugs bunny baby). i also love thrill rides. So now i have set the scene, personally, I loved it. I loved the detail, I loved the nods to previous films, i loved the falcon ride, the first time i went on as a pilot i actually did the whoop out loud when i fled to hyperspace. i thought a lot of the merch was a bit pants to be honest but ive got the dice hanging from the truck mirror and a sabacc deck at home. I much prefer the original films dont get me wrong but will watch anything star wars, I don't get into plot holes etc, i know they are there, i know the dialoge is patchy at best but if i worry about all that it detracts from my enjoyment of the universe. i guess i took that attitude into the park and it really worked for me, in my head the other tourists were not tourists, they were just other people bustling around a spaceport. in our one week stay, i went to galaxies edge 3 times and really enjoyed it every time (obviously the first was the best) the rest of the park? not so much, too hot, too many people, to much queueing (and being a brit, i can queue) legs really tired by the end of the day etc. my kids loved it too and (im ashamed to say) they are not really into star wars. When i go out to see my brother in LA, i'll go to the other one too. Everyone's perception of stuff is different, I didnt go for magic kingdom much, my sis in law who is canadian was in nostalgia heaven so each to their own

(i know my grammer and punctuation is terrible in this post, im at work and can't be ar$£d with it
