Full size Dalek?

Outstanding! :thumbsup

Did you include any electronics for light, sound or motion?

They are both foot powered, as per the original props, but both have a voice modulator in them which flashes the dome lights in sync with the voice. The guns on both have flashing LEDs in the end and have a 'laser' noise when fired. I also have the option of using water in the guns. The new series (gold) one has blue neons underneath and a blue light-up eye.

Any chance to get it from you?

I'd like to add my request also. Please? :D[/QUOTE]

Hi,

I'll add my name to the list, too please. I'd love to start building a Dalek or a Tardis. I need to figure out how to make my apartment bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

Cool to see a lifesize Who thread going.

Thanks.

:)

They are fantastic!
In the 70's I think they printed an 'How to' in a Dr.Who 'Look-In' special here
in the UK.
Always wanted to build one even as a kid :)

In 1973 the Radio Times, (the BBCs own listings magazine), printed a special edition to comemorate the 10th anniversary of Dr Who. It was in this issue that the instructions (shown in post #2 of this thread) were first published, however I do advise you NOT to build a Dalek from them as they are completly wrong in the sizes and shapes, you end up with a very tall, round, thin Dalek, although they do have a charm of their own.

Published later was the Dr Who Technical Manual, but that also has inncorrect measurements for the Daleks in it.

ProjectDalek now have sets of plans, with the correct measurements, for the classic Mk1,2 & 3 Daleks, the Movie Daleks, the 1980's Imperial Daleks and the 2005 'new series' Daleks as well as plans for the Davros chair. The workshop manual has been completly re-written and now has sections on motorising your Dalek and tips on fibreglassing.

Some more phots for you taken last month at the UK National Space Center

Both my Daleks are mostly made from MDF with fibreglass domes. I made just about every part possible on them, including the 112 bumps on the skirts, to help keep the costs down. The silver one cost £350 ($700) and took a year to make, the gold one £475 ($950) and 18 months.

nice job on both Daleks, back in 2006 before all the WHO'pla started i built mine entirely from wood and plastic, mostly crap lying aroung in the garage, approx $500, it has a sound system, voice modulator, flashing Dalek ears, blue eye stalk, blue LED's around the skirt compressed air gun. five mad crazy weekends work. no plans just some crappy downloaded pictures from the internet. i didnt evn know there was a builders guild. no 3D toy to work from, nothing but bad pictures. ohhhh my how we have come on in leaps and bounds. its got tons and tons of flaws, but its mostly there. its all about the sprit of the law as apposed to the letter of the law. and after all what do you expect in 5 weekends. its to much work to fix, its was way harder than i thought. i would love to build it better but most likely never will. so it is what it is. a big gold pepper pot.

Not wanting to start any trouble I had heard the quality of 'This Planet Earth' products was poor. If I am wrong about this (and I hope I am) then please shoot me down in flames. Just what I heard from a few friends.

The best I have seen for plans of the different styled Daleks is http://www.projectdalek.co.uk/ as also posted by Eagle.

I think they even have plans for the new style Daleks as well. You do have to register as a member and wait for authorisation but it is worth the wait :)

Cheers Chris.

I have also heard they are very thin and generally not that great

Thats a great Dalek Barrie, OK its not screen accurate but it does scream Dalek at you. I'd seen pictures of it on the web, but its nice to know a little bit more about him. The fact that you built it so quickly and without plans is amazing.

Chronos, no I'm not Davros, :lol

i want screen accurate, well damn i want a screen used one LMAO, lets face it thats never going to happen. so i got what i got, a big 200lb peice of junk, well the millenium falcon was a piece of junk right ? as you seem to be a sympathetic ear, i am sure your do a trade , mine for yours :lol
i walked up and down the isles of home depot and lowes looking for bits that looked like dalek parts. why isnt there and isle for dalek parts, why !!!so like you i made every thing except the moflash lens covers, the plunger is really a sink plunger:angel
i think the only picture i had is the one shown, and many hours freeze framing the dalek episode. there is more blood and sweat in that stupid dalek than liquid nails, and i used a lot of liquid nails..:lol

My cousin made one out of posterboard when we were kids. He could get inside it and shuffle around, poking cardboard 'arms' out of slits and screeching, "exterminate, EXTERMINATE!". I think I broke it on purpose lol

This is the same kid who used to use the pepper shaker (which actually had bumpy nodules on it) to interact as a Dalek with his GI Joes.

He was different.

These sites were mentioned by Eagle earlier on in the thread but here they are again - everything you need to know plus up to date plans for the Shawcraft TV, movie and new series Daleks;

http://www.projectdalek.com/projectdalek/

http://robstanley1.proboards55.com/index.cgi

You've got to join them to get the plans but they're both top sites.
Incidentally the This Planet Earth Daleks aren't too clever considering the cost of them

me and gary do the gun finishers, the exterminator gun, the eye, lenses (moflash copies) and the cages. the slats (in resin) and our flat-pack version of the neck-rings, uprights and necl blocks for the nsd dalek. if it's any use to anyone. the slats or the rings are quite expensive to send to australia or the states in the post and the postage is £80. but of course smaller items will be cheaper.

you'll be able to catch us up on youtube. type in 'dalek build' and look for the author 'thejeremyevans' in the blue writing.

cheers

My five year old daughter has asked for a Dalek costume, I want to build her something to her scale. Can anyone suggest plans that I can scale down to her size? I'm figuring on getting a seated height on her and making the scale based on that. I guess I need to find out the average height of the BBC dalek operators are and go with that. I'm looking at original daleks, not the current skittle daleks. Skittle daleks- - - fear the Rainbow!

Project dalek do scaled plans for all versions. Using one of these dhole slow you to build one of a suitable size for you daughter.
