Fringe shape changing box

I bought an extra USB power adapter for my iPhone today, and thought the case it came in looked familiar:

Looks like it could be the same dimensions as the Shapeshifter Box :):thumbsup

That is if you can find someone who actually has the things in stock. This has been a problem. Websites show they sell them, but they tend to have none when you try to order. Many sites were trying to find new suppliers.

if it is id be in for a group buy of the switch covers

Well, if they can be found, I too would be up for a group order.

I really hope that, that ipod thingy box, is the correct box. It certainly looks pretty good to me.

Is there any more info on this item? Such as, how much one cost? (I don't have an iphone, and don't really need an adaptor, so I would rather not spend a ton of money on one just to through the charger away, and us the box.)

Or, maybe an item number, or something?

I looked on ebay, but there are so many nock-off version, and that look just like that charger, that it makes it hard to know if you buy one, what yoru actually getting, and if it will come in that clear case. (since most of them are not picturedin the case, because most folks, other then us, could care less about the case.) I've contacted quite a few of the sellers, and even some of the ones that look like the real thing, have told me that there item is not an apple item, and does not ship in a clear case.

I would really like to get at leat one of these cases (if not a few for friends) so any additional info would be great.

I would tend to believe that Apple has the boxes made to their specs. However, are there any markings whatsoever that could lead us to a manufacturer? Furthermore maybe an email to Apple directly? You never know, we might get lucky.

Also, Chronos, could you please post the measurements?

I'm thinking of going to my local Apple store, some time next week, and seeing what they can tell me. I would ask if they had an empty case from a display model or something, but I doubt it, since this isn't really the kind of item you would display. Though you never know, it never hurts to ask. Maybe they have a returned one, or maybe someone walked out with the charger, but left the case, or something. Or if I just tell them what I need, they could contact apple and see if they could get some extra cases.

I don't plan on telling them all about the prop part of why I'm looking for one. I've gone down that road way to many times, and it always kills the conversation. It usually goes something like this:

Me, "Hi. I need this part for a replica movie prop" :)

Staff at store X "Oh, no, no, these aren't mint for that kind of thing, you have to go to a special store for that kind of nonsense."

Me, "No, really it's just a regular item, sold at stores like this."

Them, "Oh no it's not" :( (walks away, or gets rooder.)

Then I look around the store a bit on my own, and usually find that exact time, or one like it, setting right there on the shelf. I always want to go show the person, and tell them where they can stick it, but I know that kind of thing doesn't get you any where in life. Plus, you can't teach some people anything, and they will just pass your roodness on to the next costumer, so instead, I just buy the item and shut up. (sorry, got a little off topic there. :) )

Anyway's, I'll see what I can do, but if someone else wants to take that ball and run with it, more power to them. (since my disability makes it hard to get to the store.)

Thanks Chronos, I just looked at the box my wife's nano came in, and not markings other than a recycling symbol.

I just got started watching Season 2 of Fringe on DVD (got it for Christmas) and want to have a go at this box. Did anyone get one finished?

I've ordered the switch cover and am working on getting a case/box, but does anyone have a lead on where to get a retractable LAN cable where the actual cable itself is BLACK? All the ones I've found are either white or clear....

Where did you order your switch cover from? (if you don't mind me asking.)

I still haven't had a chance to pic up one of the cases. (I want to find a iphone store that would be willing to help me get just the case so I don't have to pay $30. for a charger, I have no use for at all.)

As for the cable. I thought I have seen them in black, but the kind of plastic that is on wire, should take RIT die very well. I would just get a cheep white set of retratible cables, take them apart, so that you have just the cable part (because the plastic that they use for the retractile part would probably melt) and then just die the cables black, and put the hole thing back together again. (you could do it in about a hour, and the RIT die, is less the n $2.)

Or if your not going to play with it too much, you could just use black fusion paint on the cables. (though if you play with it too much, the paint will probably rub off over time.)

I'm in the UK, so I had a look at the UK site posted earlier in the thread - 37p each is a great price from them, but even in the UK they have a £25 minimum spend and P&P even in the UK is a minimum of £6.... So I tried eBay

F436Z Nickel Weatherproof Security Key Switch Cover on eBay (end time 15-Jan-11 03:14:07 GMT)
£2.50 each is pretty high considering the other site has them for 37p, BUT P&P is free (or rather is included in the price more likely) and there's no minimum spend.

I was considering painting the white cables - thanks for the tip about the dye! :)

That's fantastic. I looked all over ebay, a couple of months ago, but some how I missed this. Now I can get me some switch covers. :)

Oh, and on the RIT die side of things. If you have some of that style of cable laying around (from an old computer, or something) Or can get some cheep, I would try it out first, before you use it on the cable you're going to use in the prop. I mean, I'm pretty sure it will work fine on that kind of plastic, but I wouldn't want you to pay for new retractile cables, and have them get messed up. But if it tests ok on a sample piece, then yeah, it should work fine on the ones you need for the project.

A member here turned me onto the RIT die. On small stuff like this, you can do it in a pot on the stove top, or in your sink, if you have a stainless steel sink. I've died a lot of stuff now, and very little of it is fabric. It works one some (but not all) plastics, and really well on a lot of rubbers. One of these days I'm going to try it on resin, but I haven't got a resin kit that is cheep enough ,that I am willing to try it on yet.

I'm also interested in making one of these. If you rent the last disk of Fringe season 2, there's a special feature on the disk with the propmaster talking about the various props. There are some good shots of the prop there.
