Well, I'm a major supporter of the idea of this being a found object.
However, you don't need fancy equipment to do this, if you did make one. (Just a lot more paciance then I have.)
I personally have never done it (yet) but a lot of folks around here have done amazing things with sheet plastics. (like styrene) You get a sheet the correct thickness. You would just make up some templates on your computer. (that part is really easy. Print them out, on plain old printer paper., and spray glue them on the plastic. (spay glue isn't very strong, so you can peel the paper off later. Let the glue set for a minute or two before you put the template on though, so there is no chance that the glue will hold it too strongly.)
You can cut them out with a good part of sizzers (sorry don't know how to spell that. :lol), or a carpet knife, or heavy duty exacto Knife. Or dremel, if your really steady handed.
U can use cut Styrene tubes if the hinges are visabule. (they make them in all kinds of shapers, and sizes.)
Then just very carefully glue it all together. If you use a thin enough styrene, it should go around the curved corners, very easily, if you use a thicker kind you might need to put it in the sun for a wile, or use a heat gun. (you can get a heat gun, at a hobby store like "Michel's". They are cheep, and good to have around.)
Sand, and fill in any gaps, or imperfections, prime, and paint it.
People do this kind of thing around here all the time, and you don't need anyting that a kid wouldn't have in there craft box, and it really can come out very sturdy, and look quite nice.
And you can order the sheet plastic, on line, or at any kind of hobby shop. (look in hobby shops that sell Models, not the ones like "Hobby lobby", or "Mickel's")
It really is quite easy, and cheep. (I'm just half bind, lazy, cheep, and not very talented that is way I don't usually do it, but I have some projects coming up that I'll have no choice but to do it.)
Though like you, I would rather just find one.
