Foam Sculpting My First Bio - Beyond The Final Rung

Well, thanks to Corey (Termokk) and the pictures he had up on his P1 bio build of a bio he got from a friend of Steve Wang's I have made more changes than I originally planned. The pictures really helped me realize how different my bio was from something closer to the original which was a good thing but it has delayed my fiberglassing it. I just want it to be as close to the original P1 as I can feasibly get it based on the information I can find. As a result it is now considerably wider, the dome is flatter, the upper cheeks and lower jaw lines fuller and the nose is narrower and has more swoop. I am still addressing a few things here and there (since taking these pictures I have added more width to the brim for example) but it is getting closer and I really want to move on to fiberglassing it. Here are a few more pics of the latest progress.

Hey BonzRus,awesome work, are you going to paint right on the foam or will you use some kind of filler and than paint it ?

Greetings KazuyaMishima, once the shape is the way I want it I will be fiberglassing it with 2 oz. cloth and Zpoxy finishing resin (see picture in an earlier post). Then I will make a filler from Zpoxy and mocroballoons to fill in any low spots. Next I will apply many coats of cheap automotive primer, wet sanding with 320 grit paper between each coat until smooth. When I am done with that I will create a silicone mold of it. That is the plan anyway....

I was thinking to make p2 bio from best available styrofoam, i found the material i like, i will probably use same method you used but after finishing cutting the rough shape i wanted to sandpaper it to as close as possible to its shape and than coat it over with filler, sandpapering it to wanted shape. Im not worrying yet about paint job. Do you think my method will give result? Im aming for 1:1 bio as detailed as possible... btw this will be my first sculpting experience. I whould also need measurements for p2 bio, will check google but i couldnt find much last time i looked.

Hey KazuyaMishimo, the foam I use is a rather fine cell material that sands and acts very much like Balsa wood. I am not sure what type of foam you have but I have found styrofoams, much like a styrofoam cup is made from create a static mess...this material would be closer to a foam picnic plate and comes from home improvement stores or building material supply houses. Bondo (which has a polyester resin base to it) and polyester resin will disolve the foam so you would need to use an epoxy resin or putty for best results. I would recommend using fiberglass cloth to strengthen it as filler alone may not be very strong since the foam is soft. Too much pressure in places as you are working on it could crack the filler depending on how thin it is and you do not want to put the filler on too thick as it could alter the foam base shape significantly. Foam and Spackle are much easier to shape than fiberglass and filler. I am not as familiar with the P2 bio as I have become with the P1 only because that is what I am working on at the moment but if you take some time to dig through as many of the posts about P2 as you can here on the Lair I bet you will find what you are looking for. Hez indicated in an earlier reply to a very similar question I had that most bio's are between 10.5" - 12.5" measured across the widest point if that helps. I wish you the best on starting your project...I would love to see your progress so start a thread and get some pictures up. Happy hunting!

Thanx for info. The foam im gonna use is much like you described, i tested it on cutting and sanding, it behaves really well imho. Only its pink in collor :D I will make thread and update it as i go but for now i am gathering info. Another thing that is worrying me is glue that im gonna use, i cant seem to find any spray based like you used and im afraid to melt the foam with some stronger glues..

The pink foam board is the same stuff so it should work well for you. I would think you could find some spray adhesive somewhere...I got mine at Walmart but craft stores and also home improvement stores carry it as well. Probably most spray adhesives will melt the foam to some dgree if applied too heavy...even the 3M77 I used will but it has a strong tack and holds fairly well. I suggest trying whatever spray adhesive you can get ahold of and just don't apply it too heavy. I too spend a lot of time researching before I start a project...it gives me time to think about how I want to do it and sometimes leads to new ideas. Good luck!

Got it...even plain old Elmer's Glue will work but it will take longer to dry...I hope you can find something better than that though.

I am finally at the point I am ready to fiberglass...if I make any additional changes they will only be minor. It is now a full 12.5" wide and 21" from chin to fin. It looks huge to be honest but the lines seem to flow well. I am actually quite pleased with how it has turned out so far. The eyes will be narrower once the fiberglass is on it so keep that in mind. Anyway, more pictures to come once I have the fiberglass on it...

Thanks Jason. I will be doing a little more work on the eyes but other than that I am so ready to move forward with it. Your bio has turned out awesome! I saw your PIF thread and it makes me wish I had joined the Lair a year or more ago so I could put in my bid...excellent idea.

Dude..... I trying to think of something different to say.... but man..... i got nothing! That thing is kick ass, so much detail and its made from foam? Dayum!

Thanks Double H! I want it to be as detailed as possible but the final detail will come after it is glassed...it has been a fun project so far.

The fiberglassing on top is now done. Now there will be a lot of sanding, filling, priming, sanding, priming and oh...did I say SANDING? :)

I am very pleased with how it has turned out so far.
