Foam recommendations needed for a storage container

My dad picked up this case to store his microscope. He's going to remove the current foam and replace it with cut foam to fit the microscope. He wants to do it pretty cheaply, yet have a nice clean cut.

Any recommendations on the type of foam he could use and how he would go about cutting it? I'm assuming he wants to keep this under 100 bucks total.

I also am looking for some foam info, I'm making gamma irradiated blood vials to put in a small hard case.
