First scratchbuild lightsaber

This was my first ever home made lightsaber.

Since my parents do not support my hobby i had to build this in the lonely hours after they went to bed:unsure. I put a lot of love and time in this lightsaber.

It was build out of rolled up sheet metal and black leather for the grips. Added a small strip of cicruitboard at the emitter and used a cut up headphone cable for the details under the emitter. I know it isn't perfect (like my english:lol) but it is my favorite lightsaber out of my entire collection.

I managed to find a complete covertec clip system and that is exactly what i used to attach it to my belt.

Feel free to share your opinion with me.

Niiice. It's less refined than most lightsabers that I've seen, and that's the very reason why I like it. It looks well traveled and well used. The weapon of a working Jedi. Most Jedi outfits and equipment tend to look so new and fresh out of the box that I can't imagine them among the throng or traveling the stars. It's nice to see a piece that tells a story. It looks like a weapon with a tangible history.

Good for you taking on a project for yourself instead of going storebought.
And you did your design instead of doing what has already been done. :thumbsup

Gotta agree. Love that its your own design (don't get me wrong, love seeing the graflex sabers too, but somethign original is always a plus!) Great work!!!

I really like the shape of your grips, the way it almost seems to wind its way around. It's not as derivative as most saber hilts i've seen, very cool.

Thank you all for the reactions and kind words.

I always keep my props at a safe place because I don't want them to be destroyed (referring to the Great Prop Purge of 2008). This was the only prop i managed to save from my parents.

Friday after my post of the thread i came home and found my Lightsaber destroyed on my room. My parents found it after i became sloppy and they tore it apart. my sister salvaged some parts but almost the whole base assembly was gone :cry

I was so mad:angry

But i also got inspired and used parts from other sabers of mine to recreate it.

It is a bit more stable now and has a exposed crystal chamber with a light up green crystal. My girlfriend felt sorry for me and gave me the crystal. It can't be used as a stunt saber anymore and i am almost certain i won't be able to fit a light up blade in there somehow.

I don't really like the overall look now but i'm still trying to get that feeling i had with the pre-destruction saber.

Hello Sjors,

Too bad your folks lack the intelligence to see that making a lightsaber of your own design means:

A) You need a good eye for product-design
B) You need technical insights and skills
C) Passion to make everything work out the way you want it
D) Make you feel proud of your achievement once finished

Those are valuable experiences that go way beyond the making of a 'toy' lightsword!

I don´t understand why they destroy your stuff.

Sure, it might be understandable that the don´t like your hobby and so don´t support you, hell, i had my own share of hobbies in my youth my parents weren´t pleased about :love - but they didn´t destroy my stuff.

Do they have a special reason for that? What did they say when you discuss the matter with them?

Edit:
I assume you have tried to argue with them?

so nice to see someone from Groningen here.

Is wel leuk om te zien dat er meerdere hollander actief zijn
It is fun to see multiple dutch people here.

I tried to argue with them but all they could say was literally: "it is not what a normal person does" so i replied with:'maybe i don't want to be normal'. and left the discussion.

There's no such thing as a 'normal' person, because every one is different.

Nice looking lightsaber you have there, keep it up, you could go far.

Thanks for the support everyone. It is really nice when people appreciate your work and i don't get that satisfaction very often.

I am in the process of building a lightsaber similar to my first one. It would be really awesome if anyone out there has an idea for a very low budget illuminated lightsaber blade.

I also want to know if the hasbro force action lightsabers are having a soundboard of decent quality?

It would be great if i could finish this project before April next year since i can only do this for 2 hours a day.

Suggestions are welcome.

Sure you want. (These kind of answers only makes them more angry, without any benefit for you, you definatly need a better PR-Manager). :D

To be normal means not that you can´t have fun (as long it´s legal, or you don´t get caught :love ) - and if you have fun in building something, it shouldn´t matter if it is a tank/aircraft-styrene-kit from a store, a bird-house/windmill from wood, or any SW-stuff.

It´s a sort of relaxing, to enjoy some free time, a hobby - as long as it didn´t gets fanatic dimensions (thinking you´re a jedi, or such :cool ). I´m over 40, over the day i sit in my nice office, at the weekend i spend some time in my garden (at least when my wife has been shopping new green stuff from Oosterrik/Denekamp) - and i still enjoy some evenings in my little shop in the basement, building SW-stuff.

I´m a SW-geek somehow, and nonetheless i have a life, i have friends, other hobbies - such things don´t contradict to each other. Damn, to be honest i´m that kind of normal i never wanted to be when i was a teenager. :lol

Maybe you should show some interest in their concerns, showing that you appreciate their opinion - trying to show them that there is no reason to be concerned.

Easy way to win this argument is with..
If a genius is in a room full of morons, the genius isn't "normal". Then in their shocked pause of silence, say slowly "Ifff aaa geeeniuss isss inn aaa rrooomm fffuuulll oooff mmmoorrons, ttthe geeeniuss iiiisnn'tt "nnnoorrmmalll".

Your parents should not destroy your stuff, end of story. Having to convince them it's ok to endulge in this harmless hobby is rather missing the point. Hence why I suggest getting your own place at the earliest opportunity.

I think that is by far the most interesting thing to try haha. :lol

But it's perfectly normal to destroy other peoples property ?

Anyway nice saber :)
