First project...Dr. Doom

Alright, I am a complete noob but I thought I would post progress on my first project. I am going to try and build a Dr. Doom armor. I am going to try and modify an Iron Man pep build for this. I have completed my first pep....well part of a pep. I started with the Dr. Doom mask pep that has the green hood. I just pulled the mask out and put it together. This weekend (depending how bad you guys say I did), I am going to start adding some additional detail and resin it. Or I am chunking it and starting over. I might have to start over anyway and resize it a bit. But I want to see it resined before I chunk it for that reason. I am hoping to give it this look....

and here are the pics of my first put together pep....

honestly its a good start in my opinion the initial coat of resin is usually the most crucial if you dont get a good mixture youll end up with a semi soggy project for days. but i like this doom is one of my favorite villians

Keep with it! I've been a RPF lurker for years, and the ultra-cool stuff people have been been doing with Wal-mart camping mats have inspired me to finally start on a Dr. Doom as well!

It looks like you're going for a more modern-era take on Doom - I myself am going for John Byrne 80's style Doom. Should be fun!

I love John Byrne's work. He is certainly an artistic icon!.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. :cool
I want to thank Finhead again for the file. It was the perfect starting point for me.

I used that same pep for my Victor...ian Von Doom outfit this Halloween. Looks pretty good so far to me. The eyes on that pep are the wonky bit, and yours seem like they turned out better than mine.

I like the whole "Doom" mask idea (I started one myself awhile ago and just sorta stopped working on it) but im not sure I would use that mask template (if it is the one that had the green hood attached) I always felt that it was a little oblong and a little basic. if you Google "Dr. Doom" and look at all the versions there are out there, you might find a Byrne era mask you like a lot better. Just my 2 cents worth. Anyways good luck to ya in whatever you do ... gonna watch this thread to see how it works out for ya.

I have already determined I am going to do quite a bit of detailing on it. I am going to add the rivets and the mouth grill similar to the one at the top of this thread. I am also going to taper brows and bring up the mouth. I like the side vents in the above pic as well. will try and do something similar...

Well, sorry for the long delay. I have been busy and doing things in stages. I have gotten 3 layers of resin on the front and 2 layers of fiberglass layed on the back. I am going to do a third sometime this week/weekend. I noticed the chin piece was a bit out of wack (on the left side looking at the mask)and tried a couple of times to fix it but got it as close as I could and left it. I will try and repair it with bondo/clay. I have also started marking some stuff I want to add/sand/bondo as I go. You will see I have put in marks for rivets to go and where the "vents" will go at the bottom/sides of the jaw. I am also going to cut out the mouth and put in a mesh backing and mouth piece like the one in the original pic. I have also made some notes on it on what to be mindful of the next time I do this.

Since this is the very first time I have done this, I am going to complete it all the way down to the paint job just to get used to all these processes and what to look for in the future. Figure this will be good experience and will be a good conversation piece later. "Hey, look at how far I have come from this piece!" :)

I stopped on the glassing the back because I got a couple of air bubble in the fiberglass cloth on the last layer and I am going to attempt to sand those out before putting the last layer in. Let me know what you guys think!

looking good so far.

should be an easy build too, if you look at the costume you could get away with only building the arms and legs of an ironman pep, and get the tunic and cape and your about done.

you dont really need to go through making the chest back ect....unless you really wanted to

good job

That was my wife's suggestion. I am seriously thing about skipping the chest plate. Just depends on how it looks. I will certainly be doing the chest and back last. :)
