First Post, First Build in Progress - Sith Acolyte

I wanted a cool Star Wars costume for Halloween. I originally thought about a Darth Maul costume and bought a light saber. But the available masks were just not good and I didn't like the idea of hours of makeup preparation. I came across the SWTOR Cinematics on You Tube and thought that was pretty cool. I bought a BEAUTIFULLY rendered Acolyte mask from DrunkenMynock, but at the time, I felt there wasn't armor available that measured up to that level of excellence, so I set off to try my hand at making it. Alas, not in time for Halloween this year, next year for sure.

So far I used mostly EVA foam and hot glue. I'm going to coat with Styrospray 1000, prime and paint. The shin armor may be made of a combination of different things, maybe fiberglass and EVA. Anyway, I'm liking this new found hobby.

Looks Good! Very suitable for Halloween. Got a Light Saber for that?

Very cool! Extremely solid first attempt, leagues ahead of the disaster I finally just scrapped and made presentable haha. Cool mask, I know Mynock usually does some solid work but DAMN.

Definitely interested in seeing where this goes, will provide any help I can. Welcome as well, fellow newcomer! These guys are GREAT here.

Thanks Ninja. I didn't use any templates. Most of my reference material has been graphics and photos from the web. I basically have been tracing the major outlines from the graphics and photos scaled them up.

I've been working on the shin armor for a good number of days. Kind of difficult to nail down with all the subtle shapes, here's my version of it:



Next I'll skin the back -- you can kind of see the cardboard formers behind the leg. I'll also add in the other details, fill, sand, Styrospray. During the construction I modified the initial templates (that I created) a whole lot as I went along, so I think it will be difficult to replicate the other leg. So...I made the decision to try my hand at making a fiberglass mold and casting it in epoxy and fiberglass -- which is something I've never tried before! Watched a lot of You Tube. I think it will take four castings: the front half, the details near the ankles x 2, and the back half. I ordered tooling gel coat, the fiberglass backing is easy enough to get. I welcome advice from anyone experienced at doing castings!

Here's the current state of the shin/calf armor compared to some of the graphics. The straps are actually knockouts which will be replaced with different straps. The ankle greeblies (I guess that's what they're called) will be glued to the fiberglass shell after it's cast. I'm hoping to be successful at making a front and back half shin/calf armor which will be donned like the "actual" armor.



I'm also reworking to forearm armor to sharpen the details and improve the accuracy.
