First Look: Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man Costume

Thanks, Guy! I will note, ruefully if not a bit petulantly, that no one else has taken up Steve's thrown gauntlet and sketched their version of Spidey. I want to see doodles! :)

I gotta say I'm liking this new design so far, but upon further review I'm not too crazy about the web shooters (ALL those other spider powers, and yet NO ability to produce his own biological webbing? I call BS!) and potentially small eyes on the mask. :unsure Hopefully it wont be too bad... or we might get a Dark Knight treatment and have his costume evolve slightly and have his spider abilities develop over time.

Spidey 2 is still the best one so far, IMHO

Costume looks bad :thumbsdown
- They never learn, can't change an iconic costume. Even in Ultimate Spider-man they were smart enough to keep the suit.
I was not as big a fan of the new Spider films as some (never liked the director much) but still it was better then this just based on the costume.
So much for the iconic nature of the character, gives me no faith they will show respect to any other area either (They should call him Ben Reilly and not bother with the pesky Peter Parker name at all )
:sick

Pretty sure I threw down the gauntlet, but you can call me Steve if you want. :lol
Alright, here's mine:

I hated the old suit with the web "piping." And I hated the 1st and 3rd movies, passionately. So, though I think it's ridiculous to be rebooting this, I think this image looks just nifty.

exclusive video....spiderman stunt scene for next movie

Celebrity Video | TMZ.com

The stunt performer had a great "Spidey-esque" landing / pose. Upped my confidence a little.

Looks like white eyes on the mask too, and a more comic red spider on the back of the costume (hard to tell in such low res).

I'm sure more high res spy photos will show up in the coming days with all the public filming going on.

I know it's completely stupid of me to be scrutinizing those grainy photos but I can't help myself. I always get excited when the first tidbits of superhero movies start leaking out...

All that aside, I'd swear it looks to me like he's definitely got the red "belt" design on his back and it looks to me like there's red on the sides of his thighs too (?) but maybe that's just the lighting. There's some interesting things going on with this costume that I'm dying to see. And as much as I gripe about it, I'll wind up liking it... I'm just too much of a sucker for this kind of stuff for the details to ruin it for me.

I just hope they don't overdo it, to the point where he's doing unnecessary acrobatics all the time. I mean, in this shot he wanted to move 3 feet, so he somersaulted. okayyyy...

(Maybe he was dodging bullets or something...)

Somebody posted a *slightly* better version of that video of the Spider-Man stunt scene. Like I said, I think there's something interesting going on with this costume that official pic only hints at. Check out the screengrabs below. Clearly the costume has the red belt on the BACK side of the costume but then it appears to go down the side of the legs sort of how the red on the shoulders goes down to the gloves. Am I reading this wrong? Us OCD sufferers NEED to know ;)

Yeah, I think you're right.

The Belt swing from the back and turns into leg stripes.

Spidey costume as designsed by Adidas.

Hrmf.

I feel like a grumpy old man, but I still say you don't mess with perfection. I know they want to make it obvious that this is a different spider-man than the last series but these big design changes aren't the way.

CHeck this out-

Blue fingers!

I feel faint.

Yep. 100% ditto on that... I caught those blue fingers too. This definitely reminds me of that Spider-Girl costume or at least some variation of it I'm vaguely remembering.

I mean, I'll survive the shock of the redesign and knowing me I'll like the movie regardless but I totally agree, it's just not necessary when the basic design of the Spidey-suit is so classic. Tweak the colors, textures, eye shapes and all of that all you want but there's no need to change the basics IMHO.

The blue fingers look like they have red wrapping up in a sprial on them.

Its a weird suit, but its kinda growing on me. Heck I hated the Ben Rielly suit at first in the comics but even it grew on me until he died of course lol. :lol

Ah, based on those screencaps I think I see what's going on. The somersault was intended to be the tail end of Spidey running up to the truck, grabbing the back and flipping up into the bed.

My sentiments exactly. The classics are classics for a reason. A tweak is o.k. but redesigns can go bad quickly. If the producers are so desperate to be original they should create their own superhero.
Having said that I am sure I'll be there opening weekend.. :p

Well, the thing is, the basics ARE there. It's red and blue, with a black spider on the front and black lines representing webbing (arcs or no).

It's not like there's a Nick Cage Superman level of deviation here.

:lol True, true. I think the thing with the belt and the leg stripes are what threw me off the most. The blue fingers definitely don't bother me and while I've got my personal preferences on the type of eye-styles, I'm okay with most of the versions that have been used ranging from the crazy big comic versions to the little silver lenses in the old 70s tv show.

I'm sure I'll get used to it. I freaked out at the tweaks of the Superman costume in Superman Returns along with most of the live action movies that have come down the pike but I eventually get over it.

I think half the fun of seeing live action incarnations is sort of like the guy/geek version of Sex in the City style gossip... "oh... my... gosh... LOOK at what she is wearing now!" (which sounds best when said in a somewhat mocking feminine tone.) ;)

It seems that often the filmmakers that have the desire to change these proven costume designs the most end up missing the point of the characters as well.

That's the only thing that worries me.

Of course there are big exceptions to that brilliant deduction. The X-men costumes are totally different and realy great films, and Ghostrider's film was terrible while the costume stayed pretty true to the comic design.

Hmmm.

Just because folks are lazy...

Check that out... nice pic. Gonna take some getting used to that design though. One minor detail that bugs me... how is Spider-Man supposed to stick to walls when he's wearing thick-soled shoes?
