Avoiding to watch any trailers to David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo unless I read the books and catch up to the original Swedish films. Hope to do it by next month end.

If this was a remake of a existing English film, I would agree the movie would be pointless. Though I don't mind watching other non-English foreign films with subtitles, there are millions who would not. Getting this English adaptation done is totally justified to get the story across to the masses.

I do wonder if anyone involved thought of shooting the film for a PG-13 rating so it would appeal to a broader audience.

Red-Band International Trailer for THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Debuts in Europe; Green-Band Domestic Trailer Launches June 2nd

Well the red-band trailer was released internationally, it is actually a unrated trailer as the MPAA don't rate international trailers.

The official domestic green band trailer will be released on June 2 (Thursday).

Oh wait you meant release a PG-13 version of the movie, well they can't have them all. Yeah I am glad that they stuck to R-rating, hopefully it will pay off at box office as well.

Very rarely are Anglo/American remakes as good the originals. I don't find subtitled movies distracting, I prefer to listen to the accent and tone of the actors. Foreign movies dubbed with english voice acting is annoying, even in animated films.
This is a particularly solid series of films too.

They've even shot at some of the same locations. You could almost swap out the actors in this remake for the originals in certain scenes.

yeah this is another frame for frame american copy. I dont get it why cant the american studios just leave these things alone? I mean the Swedish movies werent exactly good TBH. I imagine there will be one or two changes in it, like what happened with the experiment, still prefer the german original. And from recent news looks like the live action Akira movie could bomb to, HAZAA for the originals...

Let me in was a good remake (I saw Let the Right One in first). And while the film itself was good on its own and the minor changes were decent, it was still unnecessary. Do audiences really have that hard of a time with foreign movies?

I'm a big fan of Fincher, so I'll still be seeing it, but from what I remember, the Swedish films followed the books closely and just cut off the fat. So not how Fincher is going to improve on that.

Honestly? Yeah. Audiences DO have that big of a problem with subtitles. "Foreign" films are still relegated to art-house theaters. Frankly, I think you lose A LOT of the original meaning of a film when you take it out of its historical and cultural context, when you dub it, etc. There are some exceptions, of course, and sometimes people take core elements from the original and remake them in a completely different setting to good effect (IE: Yojimbo --> Fistful of Dollars), but most of the time it's just a cash-in.

The real reason why these are being made in the states is because (1) the books sold quite well, and (2) nobody wants to see a film with unknown actors in a foreign language. It's just how folks here are.


At any rate, Netflix has all three originals available for streaming.

I enjoyed the original. I watched the dubbed version and was impressed with the story. The dubbing did not really take me out of the movie as much as subtitles do.

Usually I hate US remakes, but I'm kind of intrigued by this one. While I liked the Swedish version, it wasn't all that cinematic (shot as a TV miniseries) and the guy that played Blomkvist was a little bland.

I'll check this out for Fincher, Craig & Reznor's score. Noomi Rapace as Salander in the original is going to be hard to beat though, she was perfect.

i read the books first.

the UK movies are so very poorly adapted.

major plot details are left out or changed, characters motivations are changed, or even the course of events is changed, sometimes things make no sense due to the change..
some of the changes made scenes, and characters, weaker than if they stuck closer to whats in the book.
they also stick new scenes into the movie that they made up,
for no reason as it never lends anything to the plot.

the originals arnt great movies...

the casting for the us version is way better, both as actors and fitting the characters better.
im just hoping the script for the us version is better, which im pretty sure it will.
