Finally built a Farnsworth (with electronics)

Really like your work with this. I would have never guessed the speaker grill wasn't punched until you mentioned it.

Thanks! The outlines for the grille are there, I just had to color in the lines. Hopefully I'll be replacing that faceplate soon with a better one.

Just got to point out...I started rewatching the series on DVD over the weekend & I noticed something you got better than the QMX. In the first few episodes that I've seen so far, when the Farnsworth rings, the red lamp blinks exactly like yours. Yet on the QMX replica( I know the current ones are "props"), the lamp blinks with each pulse of the ring. Kind of like "Ring, Ring, Pause, Ring, Ring, Pause". Now I've not had the fortune of seeing one of the QMXs in person, but this is just what I've seen on YouTube reviews.

I just got in on the new Jedibugs/RussRep run of the face plates, so I've been "studying" up on all things Farnsworth in preparation. I've not started collecting parts yet since I'm hoping as these new faceplates are delivered, I'll be able to get in on some group buys of the various knobs & switches, but I just had to say Thanks & let you know that your prop is exactly what I'm aspiring to.

Well done, Sir!

Wow...as many times as I've read this thread, I never noticed that this was you.:facepalm

Thanks to all for sharing in my "DUH" moment of the day.

Is this the sound module you used?

http://www.electronics123.com/kits-...-Modules/300-second-USB-recording-module.html

It looks like it comes with 4 pushbuttons... which did you use?

Also, I don't see the delay switch.. where did you get that, and how did you just wire it in like your diagram?

Yeah, that's the one I used. I used all four push buttons... I wired them all to a rotary switch, so each position selects a different button to push.

There's no built-in delay, so I just added different amounts of silence to play prior to the ring and programmed them into the different buttons.

So, for the first button, I didn't have any silence.
The second button plays 3 seconds of silence before looping the ringtone.
The third has 5 seconds
and the fourth has ten seconds.

Clever! I might have to attempt this! I'm not sure if I crippled my right pushbuttons making them fit though. 8(

Did you convert a knob like the one on the left side into the center knob or were you able to find a skirtless, red knob? Fantastic build.

Well, it's not quite like the one on the left, but I did have to sand off the skirt and paint it brown. It's the same one linked to in the first post of the Farnsworth Discussion thread.

I'm not a fan of in-progress build threads, because I always itch to see the finished product (which can take FOR-EV-ER!) but I thought I'd just post a little teaser of what I'm currently working on...

Hey Jedi et. al.,

I figured I would put this here as I think many look here for the wire diagram. I updated the wire diagram using the face plate to position everything. Couple of caveats here though. First I didn't use the same sound module. This one is the USB2Mv2 from the same site. So, no selecting different padded sounds (less wiring to deal with). Also this has a smaller (20mm instead of 40mm) speaker than the one that comes with the sound module. This was to save space. I have this idea of lacing a wire harness with old style cotton braided wires to make it look like it was from the early 20th century.

I haven't tried, but it should print in the same size as the face plate.

Sorry Visio would only let me export as .pdf for some reason the png plug in isn't there.

I also have a two questions based on your design. First how did you attach the middle button to the face plate? Yours is flat on the back of the face plate and I am concerned about clearance. Second, do you have a source for the Switchcraft 201 momentary switch (or one that looks the same)? I haven't been able to find one that isn't really expensive or that I don't have to buy in bulk.

Thanks

No expertise needed, honestly. I got the 300 second USB sound module from electronics 123, a $10 soldering iron and some solder from radio shack and watched a 5 minute video on YouTube on how to solder. The rest was trial and error, figuring out what to wire where and only soldering it down once I'd figured it out.
I did make a wiring diagram to help me once I'd figured it out... I'm sure it could be more clear, but it was the best I could do at the moment, having never attempted something like that before.

Hello where did you get the delay switch from ? And a great build
