I've used "glazing putty" with a LOT of success. Its like a softer bondo in a tube... no mixing. You can get it in an auto parts store.

I've got some of that. Bondo glazing & spot putty in a tube. Rust red color and very liquidy. Steve Neill uses it a lot; in fact, that's where I got the idea. Haven't used it much as it's too runny for a lot of the smallerl scale stuff I've been building and takes longer to dry than the Tamiya Basic type putty I prefer. But I could see using it on larger builds.
