Fifth Element Stones WIP

Yes it is. They also have a variant called Limestone which would have been more accurate for this project but unfortunately I couldn't find it in any of the shops local to me.

Holy dead thread revival, Batman! :p

Eight years later and I thought I'd give this project another go.

This time I thought I'd make the larger temple sized stones. So I got myself a few sheets of 2mm sintra and started cutting. Once glued, they look like this. Each stone is approximately 29 cm in height.

Next, I added the cracks. Based on reference pics, I drew the cracks onto the sintra and then used a soldering iron to engrave them. Once done, I gave them a coat of primer.

I sanded down the edges with a metal file, some sand paper and then Dremel sanding drum. I also used some modelling filler for the seams. Another coat of primer.

This is where it gets interesting, I found a can of Krylon Make-it-Stone texture paint in a local hardware store and sprayed the stones with that. Gave them a nice texture. At this stage, they look like aquarium ornaments. :p

Then I spray painted them with sand beige.

After some misting with assorted colors, this is what I ended up with:

What a difference 8 years make, thanks to the RPF! I'm pretty pleased with how these turned out. :) Now I need a Leeloo to complete them... :p

They look really amazing. How did you get the element symbol parts (squiggly lines) so even in depth and width?

@AtmicZombie, i just cut all the way through with an Xacto knife and added thin styrene at the back to give the illusion that its a hewn groove.
PHArchivist, can I get a fully functional cast as well? :p

I used this image and scaled it to 29 cm in height and traced the lines onto the sintra.

Excellent work! It warms the cockles of my heart to see someone else take as long as I do when working on prop projects. *lol*

That is a great graphic. Are the lines meant to be asymmetrical?

I'm not quite sure actually. If you mean the length of the lines, I try to keep them uniform on mine whilst trying to still maintain that carved look.

I decided that because I have a heap of scraps of Perspex awaiting projects, that I would make a start on a set of these for myself. I also used the same template, scaled it is Paint and printed them out. I then spent a few hours today cutting all the wavy lines with my new rotary tool. If I had a heap of funds to throw at this, I would have taken the time to draw this in CAD and have the parts laser cut. I did draw it up in Sketch Up, but it was just easier to use the graphic in the end.

Rather than make 3 of each part, I will glue these parts to another sheet of thin Perspex, then pour silicone over that. From there, I can cast as many as I need and them some. Originally I had thought I would make them solid, but now i am thinking I might be able to make them hollow and put a tea light inside each with a colour filter as the top panel so each emits the different coloured light when they are turned on.

If this goes as i hope, I will document and do a build thread.

Can't wait to see the finished stones! :)

When I did my Predator Bio, I had to set on a length of 100mm PVC pipe whist I poured epoxy over the top. That epoxy did a really neat finish in the base of the pipe. I figured that if I was mix in a clear pigment, I could do a similar thing to act as the filter.

Is there a reason "fire" only has 5 lines when all the others have 6?

That's just how the original prop was designed. Guess you'd have to ask the Mondoshawans :D

The second set you made look amazing kalkamel, got to get around to making a set myself at some point.

I guess I need to redo that one again then. I did have 5 vertical waves and added a 6th because I thought it looked better at the time.
