Fett rangefinder question

Hey I'm sure this topic has been done to death in the past, but I can't find anything about it with the search function so here goes--forgive me if this is an ancient, tired topic...

I remember reading somewhere that the original screen-used Boba Fett helmet had a tiny picture from Lawrence of Arabia glued to the inside of the rangefinder to give the appearance of Fett watching something through it. Does anyone know if this is true and, if so, does anyone know/have exactly the picture that was used? I feel like I saw it once, and I seem to remember it being a shot of Lawrence leading a group of sword-wielding bedouins into battle. Can anyone help?

Of all the reference and discussion of Boba's rangefinder over the years, I've never heard that one :lol The only image/poster I know of is in the original Tantive IV model that has a playboy cover miniature viewable in the cockpit.

Not saying it's not there, or was never there, just that this is the first I've even heard of it.

Not the screenused ESB helmet, only one of the helmets they painted in the ESB scheme that wasn't used on-screen ("Pre-production #3). Now I don't actually know if the frame as been identified from any movie yet, but I'll let someone who knows more chime in.

Ah well we're getting somewhere--glad to hear I didn't TOTALLY imagine this. :lol

Anyone else have any info?

To my understanding nothing was added into the RF. The way it was constructed allowed for this to happen but the idea was for it to glow when down so you wouldnt see anythiing there any ways unless it was translucent. I have looked at many a pic of the RF for making my scrach ones and no trace but that dosnt mean it wasnt there. ;)

Heck, most folks forget there was an added detail in the chest diamond on the silver area.

Thanks to two board members who have seen detailed pictures of the Preproduction 3/ESB-style helmet, we do know there is a film cell sandwiched in between the black magnifier and translucent block. I don't believe the film has been positively ID-ed.

The ROTJ helmet appears to have lost the magnifier piece early on, so it doesn't have a film cel.

The ESB helmet has the magnifier, but it's clear that there is no film cel.

The Preproduction 2 helmet has the magnifier, and from the pictures I have seen, does not appear to have a film cel. It does have a circular blob of what I think looks like epoxy. However, another member who saw the helmet in person said it has a film cel.

This is the closest thing I've been able to find of what I remember the shot being that was said to have been in the rangefinder--the shot I mentioned earlier from Lawrence of Arabia.

Or this one, more accurately:

Does this job anyone's memory?

I'm the one that was lucky enough to spend a day with all the Fett helmets at the Archives (minus the ROTJ and ESB hero which were out on dispay, the Bunny Ears which legend has is with Johnson now, and the Pre-pro that is in a private collector's hands, of course). The stunts ranged from rangefinder-less to a foam rangefinder (my fave - it was so fun.), to an incomplete rangefinder assembly. Most Fett Fiends™ know all those details from pics, exhibits, etc.

The "hero" we studied has a film cell inside TD or BB can tell you which pre-pro # they have labeled it as (I don't want to misquote them and screw up their system) - I took about twenty photos of the film cell from all those hard to reach angles to composite a crystal clear (relative term with a ratty old film cell) file that can be used when the replica is made. To everyone that has seen it, it does indeed look like a group of Bedouins or robed scimitar-weilding people storming a wall/rampart - charging across a sandy area. Some bodies are in the foreground, and it sort of looked like it was a "making of" shot - not a frame from a film, per se. Beats me what film it is from... and no, I can't share the file.

The LOA pic above is very much in the spirit of what's in the rangefinder though. But the people are on foot, running left to right.

As Tyler pointed out, the helmet moffeaton had the opportunity to see is the Preproduction 3 which is painted up to look like the ESB hero.

Yeah, that one.

;)

I thought it was THE hero for like two weeks, until Braks gently broke the news to me that it was actually the PP3 (and showed me all the incontrovertible evidence from books and web images showing subtle paint differences, mandible flares, yadda yadda - the man is a machine)... but it not only has a film cell - it alos has full electronics, chin strap, and the calculator guts, so to me, it's a hero. :lol

WOW that's a lot of terrific info. Thanks Moffeaton and everyone else. Too bad the film cell is not a well-known image--I was hoping to incorporate that into my bucket. Ah well. Thanks again for the info.
