I'd have to do a tandem first, in which case the neck guard and anything else brittle/hard around the head area is out. On tandem jumps you can't even wear a helmet because it's a hazard to the person behind you, so I would probably make smaller foam duplicates of those parts. (I did ask my roomate about the chamber and he said they make you take off things they think could get stuck in the turbines). If I do try this, I'll only go with the parts my professional friends deem to be safe.

I am planning on doing the N7 helmet. I'll probably start sculpting one this summer.
Got to paint a little bit on the rifle today. Mostly putting down base coats right now, and trying to figure out what sort of textures/finishes I want on different parts of the build.
This is one of several reference pictures I have. Black, silver, and grime is the color scheme I'm going with.

Lightweight molding paste, fan brush, and palette knife.
Primer.
A light pass with sandpaper and a graphite stick to get metallic contrast.
The grip area sticks out a lot when you look at it now, but once some additional weathering is done to the other parts I think it will become more unified. The rest of the painting has been done with a roller and brush.
Some parts of this need to be smooth and shiny, other parts need to be matte, and other parts need to be textured. Keeping it all the same wont really convince anyone its anything other than plastic. I've painted some parts of it twice already, when I don't like what I see I just take it off with rubbing alcohol and start over.

Put a first coat of glaze on the silver area. I also have done a tiny bit of weathering in the black sections. It's hard to figure out what I should do next when some parts of it are so flat.
I have mixed that graphite gray acrylic paint in the photo, with black gesso to get the base coat for those matte parts. The interesting thing about this paint is, if you buff it with steel wool or fine sandpaper, the paint will disappear and leave behind a bright graphite-silver (I used this paint for the armor also but when you add glaze the effect can't really be achieved).
When I finally get a new charger for my Canon this will be a lot more noticeable in photos.
May possibly laser etch the middle of the rifle where the N7 logo would be.

The rifle looks pretty good so far! For the texture, you could try some RTV putty like this: Silicone Putty, 1 lb. I got some to mess around with and it's good for extremely simple molds like you're talking about. My parent's had a 2000 Bonneville that had some really cool knobs on the air vents (looked like rocket thrusters or something) and I used this stuff to mold them.

Wow.. how did I miss this thread? Amazing build.. thank you so much for explaining your process in such detail. Everything from how you layer your paint to the engineering that goes into the construction of the undersuit for the armor.
Do you still have the link to the bodysuit tutorial you used? I've seen the one at Somewhat Stretchy : Catsuit patterns and more, but yours looks like you taped your measurements directly on the fabric to make the pattern? Or is that another one of your innovations?

That's the one I used. I did tape the pattern on, possibly because I saw it done somewhere, but also because the fabric was slippery and I only had a hardwood floor to work with.
I think I'll be ordering some sample putty and trying out a stamp from my dashboard. If that doesn't work, I've also noticed a couple of other household appliances that have a finish treatment similar to what I want. I've already sanded away my old texture on the grip - the nice thing about lightweight molding paste is, it's very easy to get rid of.

You might be able to pick that section of dashboard up at a salvage yard for a few bucks. That is if they weren't all smashed for cash for clunkers. Might be worth a try. Save molding them!

Total noob suggestion, but you could try using tolex, the stuff they use to cover guitar amps and stuff. Has kind of the same pattern, though the scales look a bit bigger.

Another way to get the "grained" look would be to use a leather and vinyl repair kit.
Fabric,Vinyl and Fiberglass Repair : Permatex® Vinyl & Leather Repair Kit
You coat the surface with the repair stuff and the color coat that you want, then take the heat tool and texture pattern, press it into the repair stuff, and VOILA! Instant colored texture.
