Farnsworth Discussion

Thanks. How much soldering and stuff will it take to put it together? The tin is about 3 3/4" x 2 1/3" I think one of the harder parts will be making the cover for that.

Check out the very first post in this thread. It's got a link to an electronics module that would fit in there and is ready to go out of the box (not sure if batteries are included, though). It's got 4 buttons and a speaker pre-wired. Just plug it into your pc and use the free software from the product page to program your sounds onto it. You can just use a single button and have it play a different sound with each press (Ringing, Answer sound, hang up sound).

And if you need audio files, the actual files used by the production can be found here:

Hope this helps,

Going to have to figure out how to get the electronics module to work. I have a Mac and it says it needs a PC. I'm sure I can find a Mac version. Looks like it will be an easy weekend project.

Unfortunately, there is no Mac Version. I had to do it in Windows running on VMWare Fusion to get it to work. Virtual Box would probably also work.

The other option is to use one of the many sound modules that don't use USB. You push a button and it records through an onboard microphone. Obviously this usually introduces more noise and there is a loss of "fidelity". I bought a different module that allow reording of mulitiple "sets" of sounds but it might be too big for you needs. Reducing battery size wil gain you some space too. AA too big, try AAA, AAA too big try AAAA or even button cells.

Does anybody know of any UK suppliers for the buttons etc?

If you search for "Gold Anodised 10 Compartment Fly Box" on ebay.co.uk you can get a Wheatly style box for £15.99 + P&P. the dimentions listed seem to match.

Just received my Farnsworth from a member here. It is static, and needs a few finishing pieces. I TRIED to search here but there are too many pages so when I ask a question, please refrain from the "Search is your friend" and "Google is your friend" comments.

The center knob does not have the "skirt" of the left hand knob, and is some photos appears to be brownish bordering on the old "Bakelite" reddish / brown. Is that the correct color? Has anyone sourced the skirtless knob? Searching revealed links to a knob identical to the left knob.

Are people priming their boxes so that the paint will adhere? Any painting tips?

THANKS for any info, my apologies for not having time to go through ALL the pages that emerge under "search."

Here's a pic of my new Farnsworth with some other pieces I had:

Hey LT,
yes, the center knob is the bakelite red/brown. I sourced a few from an electronics shop's junk bin. I've seen some close center knobs done by using another left knob, grind the skirt & paint to taste.
Just scuffing the tin should allow the paint to adhere well. Mine came out just fine!
Good luck,
Jeff

I have all the parts to build my farnsworths, but the right hand concave push button switch. I see others have them, so the source must have come through on them while I wasn't watching.

Can somebody that knows where to get them let me know?

I recently bought some on gridchoice.com for spare change. Unfortunately, it seems that their site is seasonal (?!) and not currently operating. How weird.

That said, I think I bought one-too-many. If you want to PM me your address, I'll send it over. It functions slightly differently, but looks identical.

Well, I just finished reading the entire thread, and it did take me several days. Let me just say thanks to all those who took the time over the years to do the leg work on this project. I'm sure it really makes it easier for those of us just getting started then it was for the pioneers of the project. Loving the board and the thread.

Looking forward to completing the fransworth and possibly one day meeting someone from the cast and getting it signed.

I looked through quite a few pages but didnt see a link listed to get the brass farnsworth faceplate. I could have missed it or havent got to that page yet but if someone could please post it I would greatly appreciate it. These black backgrounds with bright text give me headaches if I spend too much time on them. Thnx for any help.

Two things:
1) you can change the theme to a less headache-inducing one with the drop down at the bottom left of any page.

2) there is no source for the faceplate. They have to be custom manufactured. There is currently a run in the junkyard, but it is filled up. You can post over there to be included if anyone drops out.

The faceplates are pretty hard to come by since they have to be custom made. There is a seller in the junkyard selling them, but the list is full but you can wait and see if someone backs out like I am. Only other part I've had the hardest time coming across is a dome for the screen, unless somethings been found since I've last looked through here.

I'm hoping I can get back on the QMX list (was told they are going back up but no clue when, still haven't worked out the electronics issue I believe) but wanted to get one of those faceplates as a back up in case.

I have most of the other items already but need the faceplate to find the round glass piece for the screen. My farnsworth will not be just a prop, I plan on making it a case for an ipod classic and will be using a magnifying lens for the view screen so it will have that farnsworth look when im watching videos on the ipod. I will check out the junkyard, and thnx for the tip.

Post #16 on this thread: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=140705 has a link to a great source for glass domes that fit perfectly. It's what I used for the build that is being shown off in that thread.

Thanx for the help, when I wasnt logged in the site has a white background with black text, logged in its the opposite but the drop down fixed that.
Since the faceplates are so hard to get I may have to make a run myself. My brother owns a machine shop and I am going to send him a print of the faceplate and see if it can be water jetted from .050" brass sheet. If it can be done on the water jet machine then I will find out how much the material will cost as well as the added expense of the engraving. I also have found an outlet for boxes that look identical to the wheatley box with dimensions of 6.0" by 3.54" by 1.14", aluminum for under $15 and thats shipping included. I have one on the way so until it gets here I wont know for sure how close it will be so I dont want to get anyones hopes up yet. I realize I am very late to the post but there still seems to be a demand so as i get more info I will post it.

Can you PM me a link to those boxes? I'm willing to blow $15 on something on the chance it'll work.
