Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Hmm the sound effect file we have here doesn't match quite as well... I'll tinker with it, and see if I can get whats sounds like a closer match to me.

We could use those other sounds as well in mp3 or wav format!

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

My Samsung droid can be set to answer using the power button on the side. It could be wired to the switch or using one of the auxilliary sockets (the eyelets not the audio socket lower down) on the side if cleverly made. Outgoing calls would have to be made using voice control somehow.

If there was a way to answer them without swiping, I could even trigger the display to play a video clip of the show.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Still waiting on mine. International post. Sigh. I will be using it as a bit of a guide for my built ones except for that repulsive black screen. In the static one I'm going with grey or a stencil so it can be changed.

QMX Farnsworth arrived today, very well done. :love

I wasn't so concerned about phone functionality... just being able to trigger the ringtone, and possibly accepting the call would be fine. I have a droid app that lays a full screen video for callers when you are talking. The hard part will be doing a video clip from the show in the same position as the round screen, and finding somehing worth playing back.

I might just go with allowing it to ring from a call. I've already edited the ringtone file here to closer match what plays in the QMX prop. I figure odds are they are actually using the mp3 clip sound effect from the show.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I'm sorting through the thread.. was the eps file Talyn used for his template ever posted? If I can get it in eps format, I can avoid the $25 setup fee.

I found a local place that will do the faceplate in brass, but I would have to do the cutouts, or they can do it in a brass ooking plastic with all the cutouts done for only $9 each. They can also ship in case anyone else might need one done.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Thats way more functionality then I need. I considered putting our droid X smartphones in there, and still might do that. We can change our ringtones for each other, and we can call the other person triggering the ringtone.

If there was a way to answer them without swiping, I could even trigger the display to play a video clip of the show.

(The Droid x has a large screen, and could easily be used as a driver for an animated video display with sound.)

Now that I think about it, I like that solution for getting a ringtone out of our farnsworths. I'll put a video on there as well, in case the oppertunity arises to show it off with video running.

Plus this way we won't have to carry multiple items around with us. Our farnsworths will have practical use as well!

nice idea. found this a couple of years ago on make: websire. instructions are not very descriptive but it would be a good start for a farnsworth bluetooth handset.

I have all of the parts to build one yet so I am going to use the QMX as a reference and try to make a Season 1 version (Using photos to figure out the differences of course).

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

We scored the center gems today at Michael's. Head's up, they are on clearance, and will NOT be restocking them! We also got the LAST package of them as well.

I still need to find an eps of the faceplate (or create one from the pics posted here previously), and find a source for the pushbutton...we have all the parts now with those exceptions!

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Ok, so I just minutes ago unwrapped my Farnsworth I just got off of a member here, thanks you are AWESOME. Not going to shout you out loud though. Anyways, a few people have said that with the new QMX one, they would prefer to get it to ring without having to open the box to make it do so. Here's an idea. You know around easter time in stores like walmart, they have those little chicks that peep when placed in your hand when the 2 metal contacts are touching? Tear one apart, hook the wires to...the headphone jacks on the side, therefore instead of a switch inside the box, you can use a trigger on the outside while not compromising the exterior case... whatcha all think?
Also from what I've seen the QMX one has the jacks, and they are not used or hooked to anything.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Ok, So I have perused this thread many times and do not have a billion hours to go through it once again, so a few quick questions, are all three button/knobs on the bottom supposed to be roughly the same height? Trying to figure out how tall the push button should be. And has anyone found any manifying glass lens to use for the screen? I'm looking (hoping) to find one in perfect clear to install an lcd in mine. My lcd is perfect width, coming up short on height, hoping a magnifying lens would help, any thoughts on that?
thanks

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

brain here is a lens I found that is about right. It came from a hand held illuminated magnifier. I needed extra screens for the Claudia Farnsworth and ony bought two from the original run of them. On the right is the vac formed one I am using for this Farnsworth and you can just see on the left a lens from a Winnie the Pooh tap light.

here is the tap light lens compared with the vac formed one. It is a pretty good fit though the profile is higher.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

There was a post about page 10 that had scientific glass mixing cups (I thinks thats what they were) that had a link that still works.. two were just a few bucks shipped. They should arrive by friday, I think.

I think the push button should be the same height (or close) to the other knobs based on various pics here. We are havingissues locating something as well.

Someone suggested Home Depot.. they DO have a push button that would do, but you'd have to cut the top shaft in half, and toss the entire lower assembly.. its far too tall.

Someone else suggested ace hardware.. we'll check them out tomorrow.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I got the following parts today, Wheatley case, the back is deeper than the front, ok for me as I want a bit more room for electronics. Faceplate, red light bulb holder, center brown knob, correct right push button, brass tacks for around the screen, 2 correct side jacks, still need the left knob and a screen, then work on getting the lcd hooked in. Has anyone hooked up their center knob to a 12 point switch or anything like that? I'm thinking of that, if my lcd idea works. Maybe play up to 12 vids or something.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I got a lot from another RPFer that I won't shout out unless he comes forward, but I feel very lucky to have gotten it, been wanting to take this on for a while. I'll check those out, but I'm thinking I want to see about magnified glass, as my screen I want to use is perfect width, not perfect height, so maybe a nice magnified glass may make it pop a bit more.
Thanks though.
The push button I got looks like the ones zombie killer is selling.

I'm not at home right now (for quite a while) to take any pics but I bought a couple of things a while back so it was either one of these type of magnifiers

UltraOptix Handheld Lighted Magnifier - Round 3" - 3X | eBay

or one of these non-illuminated ones (3.5" lens)

eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d

I have one of these too (sorry if this link expires soon - it was all I could find quickly

10x MAGNIFIER HAND HELD MAGNIFYING GLASS 3in | eBay

Peter, do you happen to know what magnifying glass that was from?

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

You could always use a rotary shaft encoder to provide input to a PIC or Arduino. They can be quite small.

That would be fine as long as you use some kind of insulated socket or insulate the hole in the box. If not, your two sockets will be shorted together all of the time, meaning only one contact no two.

Also from what I've seen the QMX one has the jacks, and they are not used or hooked to anything.

Yeah the pics on their site show that they are for show only. One could always connect them to some addition to the prop.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Has anyone got a eps for the faceplate? The best I can do is upsize the rather small jpg posted here, and then trace it in illustrator, but I'm getting stairsteps, and the gray portions kinda look like crap.
