Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I have a couple of wooden candlestick holders and a brass one that I can select from to vandalise for the first base I make. It will be the not so screen accurate version so that I at least have a stand. I'll weight the base so it doesn't tip if I go wood.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I got my aluminum fly boxes in amazing shipping time! They arrive two days after I ordered them from My Fishing Gear Store A light weight brushed aluminum fly box. - My Fishing Gear Store

The contact there said that the boxes could come in different colors if we needed them, but since we will be ainting ours anyway, I just went with the lightly brushed aluminum finish. They look identical to the ones I saw in previous posts. (I still need to double check any measurements posted here against them.)

They are the cheapest I could locate anywhere... $12 shipped each. (The store also combines shipping... two shipped were $22.)

Since this is much less expensive than the ones listed in the first post, (And a US source) maybe you want to add the link there as well?

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

6"x3.5"x1"

Is that the correct size people are using? (I still haven't sifted through the thread for proper size.)

I did spot an issue with these.. there are two rivet holes on each of the sides for accuracy freaks.

Close enough for us though.

Does anyone have spares of those clear 15mm Acrylic Round Cabochons? I figure if you guys got packs of 50, odds are you have a ton left over we could get shipped in a regular envelope.

Don't have my Wheatly box at hand since I'm at work but I think the length is fine but its a little short on the width. I'll measure when I get home.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

It looks like two widths were spotted in earlier posts, and 3.5 is right according to those earlier posts. I'm still going through to see if the actual accurate size was posted at some point.

The 9601 that I have right here measures (when closed): 6 1/16" x 3 5/8" x 1 3/16" when measuring the outside surfaces.

The inside bottom, measuring inside of the lip, is around 5 15/16" x 3 7/16" x 11/16" to the top of the lip.

The other thing I've found in being different is the roundness/angle of the corner curves. Most of the faceplate templates out there are designed with a slightly different rounded corner than what will easily fit in some of the cheaper boxes out there, so they'll need to be trimmed/rounded down.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I've grabbed the faceplate pics in the thread here.. is there a color faceplate image anyone has done for a inkjet printable version? (One with the button images removed.)

I just went through the hold thread again for details I needed...it only took 2 hours. ;)

I ordered the glass lenses someone posted a link to, but never found a good lead for the push button. I suppose I can use radio shack ones, and just mod the top of them, or come up with something non functional that look ok until I locate some for a good price.

I saved the link for artbeads, in case no one here as extras of that center gem.

BTW, to cleanly remove the glued in fly inserts in the boxes I purchased, pull up at the foam on a corner... odds are one of the corners will also strt to pull up the white backing behind them. Thats what you want to grab. Once you have it, with a fimr slow steady pull, you can completely remove those innards and you'll be left with a clean aluminum box with no glue residue.

(I learned this after pulling one out piece by torn piece! LOL!)

It looks like these boxes do match the size serenity just posted very closely, but the width looks to be 3 1/2 exactly, not 3 5/8.

I should get the reaminder of my parts this week. I didn't pick up the electronics, but do have one of those yak boxes right here.

I might just do non functional for dragoncon, and then add improvements afterwards.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

The left knob is out of stock till mid sept. Any other source for it?

EDIT: They have it in white still, so we'll just get those and repaint them.

Also, could the sizes be provided in the first links in the thread, so searching for alternate parts sources would be easier?

It looks like the same place that has the center knob also has the red indicators as well, and since the listed source wants $15 for shipping for two of those red indicators, combined shipping on parts would be nice.

The OP also does not list the push switch on the right. Is that just a stock momentary switch?

I also can't find any reference to anyone making a etched faceplate, resin or otherwise. Is that considered taboo?

I ordered mine from Sweetwater Music. It is a Fender Bass Knob. If you look at the white line it is more correct than the one from the parts list.

You can find the 15mm Acrylic Round Cabochons in Michaels. They are in the Wedding section. They're in a clear box and come in a few different sizes. There are four of each size and they only cost $1.99.

Thanks!

Now that you mention it, I picked up some smaller green ones a few weeks ago for our greenlantern ring mods.

I'll visit them again on our weekly run this week.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Today I had two packages arrive.. both lower knobs, side jacks I hope to usem and the red light as well! In just 2 days, I've gotten almost all the parts I need.

Has anyone found a good way to trigger that 30 second sound module, if I pick those up as well? Whats the volume and sound quality like on them? (I'd be using the farnsworth ring.)

Ideally I'd think you'd want the sound somehow triggered while the case is closed. Maybe if the lower right push button almost touches the top of the case, squeezing the case would trigger it?

The resources here have made this one of the easiest props to make. Thanks much for all that past legwork! Now I just need to come up with some method for the faceplate.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

You could always have it activated using "Harriet Tubman's thimble" using a magnet and reed switch.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I had to file the corners and edges on my first brass faceplate to get it to fit into the Wheatley box. It is a quite snug fit now thought the aluminium box does have a bit of flexibility in it. I might go the screw method of the real ones to hold it in place but will likely use neodymium magnets in the corners.

Most of the faceplate templates out there are designed with a slightly different rounded corner than what will easily fit in some of the cheaper boxes out there, so they'll need to be trimmed/rounded down.

I was thinking of using the bolt on the back as the trigger button if I go the sound effects route.

Right now I'm trying to find an inexpensive bluetooth car kit that'll fit inside the case once disassembled. Then it'll ring (using the show's ring as the ringtone) when someone calls and I can use it as an actual phone. When I make the second one we could just use voice calling and make the pushbutton the bt control button.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Thats way more functionality then I need. I considered putting our droid X smartphones in there, and still might do that. We can change our ringtones for each other, and we can call the other person triggering the ringtone.

If there was a way to answer them without swiping, I could even trigger the display to play a video clip of the show.

(The Droid x has a large screen, and could easily be used as a driver for an animated video display with sound.)

Now that I think about it, I like that solution for getting a ringtone out of our farnsworths. I'll put a video on there as well, in case the oppertunity arises to show it off with video running.

Plus this way we won't have to carry multiple items around with us. Our farnsworths will have practical use as well!

Is there any differences with the None/Small/Large size? Or is that the insert?

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I don't think so, but you might want to send him a message. Tell him you want exactly what I ordered. (Just let him know you saw my post.. he knows me as Gareee.)

I also checked, and my DroidX has a screen size 2 1/8 inch wide. That might be a tad small for the farnsworth display. but I could always put a circular black mask around the edge of the opening, I suppose. I need to check to see how wide the circular screen is supposed to be.

BTW, is the ringtone here official, or did someone provide it? (It sounds a bit tinny to me.)
