Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

I believe this mockup to be much more accurate, got a nicer, straight on screencap to go from, so any perspective mess ups on spacing should have been avoided.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

Well, I got the metal case today (it's spot on).

The paint job does have a slight anodizing but I was able to easily remove a portion of the paint with some simple sanding (If you look in the photo below, you can see where I sanded just above the blue hemisphere).
I think Im going to paint up this box instead of plating it though.

I also recieved the left hand radio knob (Also spot on). (Picked it up here - http://www.pedalpartsplus.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=PPP&Category_Code=KNB )

I had some faux acrylic jewels in my greebly drawer and the hemesphere is exactly the correct size (16mm) in diameter....Unfortunately I don't have a clear colored hemisphere...I only have blue.
I went to the craft store where I originally picked up this hemisphere and they no longer sell them. They only sell diamond cut faux jewels now.

Still waiting on the indicator light and the momentary switch.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

Very cool, what type of paint are you going to use, I was thinking of the antique polish stuff you can get at michaels, they have a very nice brown gold finish

Not sure yet. I was going to put a couple of bases of copper spray paint and then hit it with plain dark brown..then either sponge it with acitone, or lightly scotch bright it.

Does the antique polish from Michaels give a splotchy effect like the actual prop color?
If it does, I might try that instead.

I used this one - (Model 9601 GOLD color)

BTW, does anyone know where I can get those faux acrylic jewel assorted packs?
Michaels used to sell the ones with the domed clear acrylic hemishperes...now all they sell are the diamond cut jewels.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

Im not sure about the splotchy effect, but a copper base with brown and weathered with acitone sounds perfect! I was wondering if anyone is actually working on the metal insert plate with engravings and cutouts? If so I think I might do a build!

Not sure about the engravings and cutouts.
I could easily do the cutouts for the knob holes/lights, TV screen by hand...The speaker slots might be a bit tricky.

As for the engraving, Im definitely going to have to find a laser engraver.

Anyone know someone who might be able to do this?

Also need to find the correct font for the Farnsworth text....I looked for awhile last night and found some which are similar, but not exact.
There's one called Ballpark Script, which has the correct "F" but the rest of the letters are more rounded than the actual text.

My wife just spotted a compass set at walmart that had a similar box. It's great when she keeps a look out for prop stuff :love Going to check it out to see if it might be a cheaper alternative for the budget minded.

i checked those out today, theyre about a half inch too tall and have 3 holes in the back, but otherwise theye a good alternative.

Thats what ive been posting the faceplate ive been working on for :p I ended up having to fake the "F" in Farnsworth to make it match.

Now that you got the case in hand DARTH, is there a logo on the front and is it removable?

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

I have access to a laser engraver, its ususally used for wood engraving, but ive used it on acrylic and styrene. Not sure it would do brass, but they sell styrene with gold chrome over it, so I may try that. Once i get my case in and can get exact inner dimensions and shape, i can certainly do up a few extras.

Hey, Thanks for offering a run of the plates Kylash (even if thins don't pan out)...Try to find out if you can cut into brass as well.

Regarding the logo -

On the front cover there is a black logo painted on...This can easily be painted over or sanded off.

On the back there is a small embossed logo (Not a deep embossing, it's very light.... so you might be able to sand that off as well.)

ALSO, I was watching Warehouse 13 last night, and I noticed that in one shot (When the girl is holding the Farnsworth) there is some kind of rivet right where the embossed logo is at on the back (It's about 3/4 of the way down in the center).
The show I was watching was on demand and wasn't in HD...So it was hard to notice details. Im thinking they might have put a rivet there to cover the logo or somthing.
Maybe you might have better luck with screencaps from HULU or something (I don;t even know how to take caps from HULU)

It was in episode 3 or 4 I think.

EDIT - BTW I found the closest match to the font. It';s a mixture of two fonts.
The "F" is from a font called "Ballpark Script" and the rest of the text is from a font called "Moonshine Script" or "Licious Script" (They're both the same).

I got Ballpark Script...But the other two are hard to find for free.

I get the screencaps using the "print screen" key, then paste into any image program.

Ill see if i can find what youre pointing out.

Regarding the font, I definetly agree on the Ballpark Script for the F, i dont have it, but checked it out online and it looks right. Though it seems odd theyd mix a font for such a small detail like that...

I used Kunstler Script Black for the rest, all with an outline stroke to match the other outlines.

I believe the Futura I used for the numbers is a perfect match.

Ill try making a fake of the Farnsworth name using the fonts you named, using jpg images of the fonts. Vector is better obviously, but if i cna get a clear enough jpg faked, it will work for the laser cutter.

Really? Print/screen works? Every time I tried using it in the past I would get an image of the page and the movie screen would be greyed out.

Yes, FUTURA seems to be dead on.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

heres the fake version so far. Not sure on the F now, i had to elongate it to go over the A as much as it needed too, and it was a little too italicly skewed.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

I've used Print/screen while watching CSI with no problems.

If anyone can do the face plate I would be very interested.

anyone got any thoughts on the thickness of that front plate? Looks pretty thin. I think the styrene comes in .40 and .60 thickness.

just got my Wheatly box! Im surprised that the inside lip is actually a separate piece of metal wrapped around the inside... the originals liike like it was just bend into a lip. Also not sure about those ribs on the right side for pulling it open, otherwise looks dead on.

EDIT:

After checking out this shot again, those ribs on the sides ARE indeed there, hot damn i think we have an exact match!

By taking a half assed scaling, it looks like the faceplate is about 2 mm.
