Fantastic Four

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

Come on. They're still publishing Spider-Man and X-Men.

More likely, sales are flagging or they don't know what to do with the characters.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

Is it important for the actor to look the part?

It's hard to really discuss this one since a lot of people tend to get really excited about it, especially if you further confuse it by mixing race into the discussion. Certainly everyone has their opinions, but I've always felt that, yes, it's important.

Part of that is probably because I spent so many years building scenery, and it always irked me when we'd spend most of the budget and months of work getting every detail to look just exactly right only to have the director say "Who cares how the actors look"

The audience cares.

In some cases it's irrelevant. Jackson may be black, but personality-wise he fits the part well. Plus, he wasn't introduced in a Nick Fury movie. We saw him on film what...4 times as a one liner before he had more than half a scene?

But as I said...ignore race and see what happens to the conversation. Could Carey Elwes be as good at Wolverine as Hugh Jackman? He's a great actor. He could easily pull of angsty loner. But we all know it wouldn't work. There's just no way we could ever look at him and think Wolverine. He simply doesn't physically fit the part as written. How about a Harry Potter reboot where Harry is the ginger and Ron is dark and handsome? Does the dynamic change any?

That doesn't mean this is guaranteed to bomb, it could be great.

But it does mean that the odds are not in it's favor.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

I don't know why people are up in arms over this or acting surprised.
Why would Marvel want to help promote a movie that they have no stakes in whatsoever, and would rather have back in their own hands.

That's like if you sell off a family heirloom, then realize what a horrible mistake you made, but the person wont sell it back to you, so would you help him sell it to someone else instead?

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

Not wanting to support the movie is understandable, but at what cost? Abandoning source material like the comics altogether, removing the FF characters from all comic related promotions too? Here is the Marvel 75th Anniversary image which was shared on Statue Forum earlier that shows the various Marvel characters, no sign of FF.

The FF comics were indeed what jump started the 60s Marvel wave of superheroes and it's in real poor form to exclude them from the 75th anniversary promotions. I'm surprised they didn't include Wolverine either. They have included Rocket Raccoon instead. This is now more in line to promote the MCU.

I am planning to buy the Rittenhouse Marvel 75th Anniversary trading cards along with the Marvel Universe cards. I wonder if only the sketch cards are being restricted for the FF characters or if they are off limits in the whole set.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

I have no idea what's wrong with studios these days, but I hope to never see Schwarzenegger as Mr. T. in the next A-Team reboot :lol

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

Marvel is putting the focus on the characters they own the full rights too, they're focusing on characters that are involved in their own upcoming films, what's so hard to understand about that? It's all about the dollars, it's how business works, it's as simple as that.

Obviously with a character like Spider-Man they can't do this, it's Spider-Man, he's WAY too big of a character to just get rid of, he brings in way too much money, which is the exact same reason why Sony will never let him go. They can get rid of the FF no problem because really, it's the FF, most of the general public has no idea who the hell they are or couldn't care less what happens to them.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

Gee, Jessica was a miscasted Susan Storm, now Kate… no even looking a bit like Su what I had in mind and I am no FF fan.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

Reading this thread has brought me to two conclusions:

1.) People will write enormous, in-depth essays to deny the fact that racial representation is important.

2.) If this movie succeeds in any capacity at all, the salt these people will cry will be omnipresent and delicious.

Racial representation in characters IS important if you're saying youre sticking to source material in teh books. I know I don't want to see a Native American Bruce Wayne in Batman v. Superman. If you do and call yourself a comic fan then we have ourselves a problem. i know for sure I still ain't seeing this with the cast it has, including a black Jonny Storm which is my main gripe. If they can't get it right with a reboot then I want to see the rights revert.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

You said racial representation was important, then you listed two minorities you don't want to see onscreen.

Meant that I did not want to see racial representation in comic book movies if it goes against source material in a way that fox is doing it with this...That IS major. No white Black Panther, no Asian Storm..no, no, and NO.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

This doesn't make much sense. How is stopping the comics being published going to affect the movie?

Entertainment conglomerates utilize feedback loops to enhance the value of their content between channels - publication, film, TV, and toys in Marvel's case. Removing one of those should have a sizable negative impact on the present value of the franchise. Immediate box office sales may not see much of a dent but its sequels certainly will - FF content only being released every few years with no comics, cartoons, or toys in between content years, kids will move on to other franchises. Marvel's publications are also essentially content R&D for its films, so by killing FF in the comic stands, they are also starving the films of new stories.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

Thanks, I can see that now working in the long run. Need to see how long they are actually going to let the comics remain dormant. Besides, the movies aren't going with the classic stories anyways and using the Ultimate FF universe as their template.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

Ugg why do the directors and producers feel the need to make all superhero movies gritty and more realistic. They are friggin comic book/superhero movies. I don't really want to think too hard other than where to get the popcorn. Now they don't need to be campy or whatever but surely there should be a balance. The movies that Marvel actually produces have a great balance I think.

For what it is worth, I actually liked the two previous FF movies enough to buy them on disk. They were not the greatest but better than alot of the crap that is produced.

Oh also the casting does not upset me too much, I can wait to see the movie before I make a judgement. I think the Marvel really wants all of it's properties back and now that they are part of Disney with the deep pockets that go along with it, they can afford to put the screws to the other studios if they want to.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

Just in case you had any doubts...

http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/32958/-fantastic-four-reboot-not-using-comic-stories

"I've never been a fan of comics, I've never actually read one. I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn't necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn't do it because the plot won't be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions.
The one fact is I am a fan of comic book movies, so it's very exciting to be part of a movie like this. I don't feel more responsibility with this role that I've felt with others. I understand that there are many fans of The Fantastic Four and I guess they expect a lot from me, but I prefer not to be pressured by that.

We are also trying to create a new way of seeing these superheroes, I'm focusing on making her (Susan Storm) as real as possible. I was excited, but I only focused on doing the best I could. I think there are roles you get if that's what needs to happen. I kept everything in perspective although expected to stay with the paper, because the movie has great actors like Michael B. Jordan (who will be the Human Torch)."

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

I am sorry. If you are going to do a comic book movie that is based on a comic book, then it should still have the core elements of the comic book. I am all for racial equality, but if the comic book has established the characters by a certain race, gender, etc, then they should stick with that. If they do cast Johnny as an African American, it will not stop me from seeing the movie, I just hope they explain it, like Johnny or Sue were adopted and step siblings. I just think to cast someone of a different race just to appease social groups is wrong.

I hope this movie will not suck. Let's see what the panel has to say.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

I think Greeks have been grossly underrepresented in superhero films.

After all, 300 should have had nothing but Greeks and Persians in it, to be true to the original characters, especially as conceived in the comics.
Plainly a racial bias was shown towards a different demographic.

Since they completely blew it on that, I'm holding my breath and having a tantrum until FF is remade with an all-Greek cast, because obviously the FF were intended to be representative of Beaver Cleaver 50's Americana, and there's no good reason they shouldn't recreate them to reflect the fact that Western civilization and indeed America owe everything they have to the Greeks.

Oopa.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

"The plot won't be based on any history or anything published" ugh, lets throw everything out and make it "new" and "fresh". Don't use anything that fans might recognize. The uniforms should have more orange and yellow stripes and the bad guy will be Dr. Unfortunate! Brilliant! Lets see if we can get Michael Bay to consult on the dialog and story points! Brilliant!

If this movie doesn't suck it will be a miracle of near Biblical proportions.

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

In an era where a white guy can play Tonto, when even the original series managed to get a real indian, frankly I don't think white people have a leg to stand on if they want to make a few white comic book characters black.
