Evil Dead II/Ash Williams Costume

Hey guys, so with the Evil Dead remake due out in spring, I thought it would be appropriate to have a go at an Ashley Williams costume. I'm new to making costumes, but I've always wanted to have a go and I'm rather excited about this one. The final pieces of clothing arrived today in the post, so I can get cracking with ageing and distressing. I am only just beginning this project, but I will update as regularly as possible. Any tips are appreciated, especially when it comes to the Chainsaw modification.

To do list:

Weather clothing
Modify chainsaw
Shorten "Boomstick" barrel length
Spray "Boomstick" metalwork black
Create leather "Boomstick" holster

A few quick photos:

Excellent, Big fan of the Evil Deads, so wanting to get one of these done myself, unfortunatly being from the UK its hard to get hold of the Homelite :( and unsure what the import is on them from the USA, Will be interesting to see the finished product, I have seen some really good chainsaw builds and some really bad ones lol, good luck with it :D :thumbsup

Also you might have been better starting with this model:

This was the one used for the movies, the one you have should be fine as there isnt a massive difference between them. Aslo if you do a search here then you will find a handful of threads with some good info on the transformation process :D

Thanks for the encouragement Drac, I'm from the UK as well so I had to get the chainsaw imported :). I know the model is slightly off, but it was all that I could get a hold of at a decent price. I'm confident I can get it to look very close to the film version, once a 20 inch bar has been installed, the handle has been modified, painted etc.

Ah right was there any issues with getting it over here? Postage was one of the things putting me off as its obviously very heavy :p I'm sure you will have it looking the business in no time :D

As you are not going to use the motor you could ask the seller to rip it out?, then he could sell that to someone else.

I've been wanting to make one of these costumes as I inherited an accurate homelite chainsaw that stopped working.

You're off to a great start!

Yeah, finding the correct model chainsaw in the UK isn't easy - but if you're patient they DO exist here and crop up on eBay from time to time.

For modification, check out this thread:

Lots of great reference there. And if you have any other questions about it, just shoot (I've modded one myself).

Where did you find your Boomstick? Thinking that that's one of the things I need to add to my display.

Thank you all for the comments;

I had to wait 4 weeks for it to pass through all the various customs which is obviously inconvenient, but all in all it was a fairly smooth transaction. The tax wasn't too expensive either.

Thanks for the link Howlrunner, there's some really helpful stuff on there, I'll be sure to use it for reference. The Boomstick is an Edison Montecarlo Double Barrel Shotgun; it fires caps which are actually quite loud and give a nice "smoke trickling out of the barrel" effect when removing the shells. I bought mine here.

Not a bad idea not sure how that would effect customs :confused

I'm waiting for a new hacksaw to be delivered, then I can saw a portion of the Boomstick barrel off. In the mean time I'll start dismantling the chainsaw. Any tips on weathering the clothing? I'm going for this look; the pre-ripped version.

You could try going to a deserted cabin and reading from a book called Necronomicon Ex-Mortis while wearing your costume you never know it may look like ash's pretty quick :lol:lol
Seriously though I have no experience there but there are some super talented guys and gals here that will help you with that one for sure :cool:thumbsup

I like your advice, maybe I should leave the engine in the chainsaw arm, you know, just in case I run into any deadites.

Its probably the best bet, you never know whats in them woods :eek

Oh I know what's in them woods, horrible ram-a-sam-a-cam-a nastiness. I'm thinking I should probably watch the film again tomorrow, get some reference pictures.

Sounds like a plan, Im sure I have some good reference pics somewhere on disc If i come by them i'll let you know :D

If your basing the outfit on Dead by Dawn then I would probably go for the shorter barrel, but it is personal preference :D

I agree. It also looks cooler in my opinion. I've started dismantling the saw, but have hit a dead end removing the fly wheel. I believe I need a socket wrench for that job. Not much else I can do today on the chainsaw, unless there are any things you guys can suggest. I should get my hacksaw and socket wrench tomorrow, so I will be able to do a bit legwork on the chainsaw and Boomstick.
