Howdy folks!
So Dredd 3D was freaking awesome. I always loved the concept of Dredd but was never a comic reader. So my knowledge of the mythos of Dredd is limited. FWIW I label Stallone Dredd as awesomely bad, so bad it's good. However I put Dredd 3D at the top of movie list!
That being said, I decided to expand upon the universe Dredd 3D set and tackle what I thought were an interesting side story of Dredd, the Dark Judges. Admittedly, I've only heard about them from seeing all the side comments in the movie thread. hehe
I thought Judge Death was neat, but was really digging Judge Fear. I thought his helmet looked the coolest out of all the judges. So Judge Fear it was!
I want something that would look familiar in the Dredd 3D world so I figured basing it on their helmets would be the best bet. Being a fallen Judge, seduced by the darkside, his regalia should somewhat resemble the gear he died with; but with modifications done to suit his personality. I wanted his helmet to be a hybrid of Dredd, Ronin Warriors, and a medieval great helmet.
I started simply enough with a pep file done by ________.
It took me 5 hours start to finish to cut and glue the helmet together. I didn't think to take a picture until after I applied the resin.
My uber professional drying method.
After fiberglassing, and like 4 weeks later, I started on smoothing out the helmet and getting a more round shape. I also took the X off the front.
Here you can see the difference a little shaping with a file can do.
It's a messy job but it gets it done. :thumbsup
Now I honestly thought i had taken more pictures but I guess I didn't. It's not all that interesting anyway, but the jest of it is bondo, primer, sand, repeat.
Here's a shot during the final stages with a generous amount of glazing putty.
It's always exciting getting to this stage because of how much smoother it becomes. Before this stage, it's a bit disheartening seeing the huge amount of work laid ahead of you.
Also, I found that some cracks began to form along the brow and corner as the helmet flexed from sanding and general handling. Easy enough solution was to use that plumbers putty on the cracks. No more problems. :cool
Almost getting there though!
There's a couple of more issues to work through at this point. The edges are absolutely horrendous. Luckily, a good file and spot putty fixes just about anything. :thumbsup
But I'm not making a Dredd helmet, I'm making Judge Fear. I mulled a bit on how to do the other pieces and came to the conclusion plasti-dip foam would be my best bet. I'll be honest, it's my first time working with foam but it's such an easy medium to work with. Cheap to boot as well, I scored a multi colored pack of about a dozen big sheets half off at michaels for $6.00. :cool
I've got the side wings, face mask, back detail and horn detail all cut out waiting to be glued and dipped. I'll work on those later today when I wake up. Hopefully I'll be squared away for paint by the nights end.
Cutting it close!
