EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Additional Animation Footage

Love the shot. It's great to see some fun stopmotion :love

I was thinking that another cool shot to do would be the Wampa dragging Luke through the snow. It was the shot that they tried to get on location but couldn't get to work (actor kept falling over, just didn't look right, etc.)
 
I love the Stop Motion miniatures you've made, I love the animation itself and what you are doing with these additional scenes...however I feel the whole thing is being let down by the actual composite, there's no subtlety to the outline of the Wampa or the Taun Taun, where as the original was animated against an actual sky backdrop which retains the softer edges of the creatures fur, this composite into an actual plate from the film seems very hard edged, plus I think using the exact same angle from the movie takes away from the shot, it looks like you've just added work into an existing frame, I think this would look cooler closer up and either better comped against the sky or animated against a painted backdrop like the original scene. The lighting on the original Taun Taun is also coming from a different direction to your final shot.
 
Just watched the vid - FANTASTIC JOB!

Now.. how about a scene from the Cantina where instead of Han shooting back at Greedo, Han tries to convince Greedo that he's on the wrong path and that they should discuss their differences... ;)
 
GlazyUK- Dude, I DID just add my work into an already existing frame, this first shot was just a warm up exercise since I hadn't pushed any puppets around in 18 years! Yeah, I know it could look better, but I'm not ILM, I'm just a struggling artist/fan working in my garage literally doing this stuff on a dimestore budget and using whatever I have available! I wanted to do this shot originally using a multi-plane painted foreground and background setup but hey, I'm no Mike Pangrazio. And regarding the lighting, again this was an experiment to see if I could use overhead flourescents for animation, I know it doesn't match. And in defense of my compositor buddy, he had an incredibly tough job of taking that animation footage that I gave him which did have a bit of a flicker problem due to the flourescents AND also because of that had an exposure problem that he had to deal with as well as dealing with color timing to try and get the footage to match as best as possible to the original, all in all he did an INCREDIBLE job with what I gave him to work with!!
That was the only shot that we did that way, the next 2 shots are going to be originally composed shots with no reference to any existing footage...... and no more flourescents! Remember people, this is an exercise in fun, I'm not trying to equal ILM I'm just trying to do the best I can with what I have to work with.

What you've done from home is amazing, I certainly couldn't even attempt to make such cool figures let alone rig them for stop-motion, your Cyclops is one of the best things I've seen on these forums. I was simply pointing out some things about the initial shot that were wrong in my opinion. And I think from what I've seen of your work you could almost match the look and quality of the original ILM shots with a bit more time and effort and a bigger bag of dimes.:) And I'm so glad you're doing this the traditional way and not trying to recreate the creatures in CGI !! Keep up the great work ! :thumbsup
 
Cool man, thanks GlazyUK, I totally agree!! Sooooooooo....... anybody out there want to donate a bigger bag of dimes so I can actually spend more time on this project instead of wasting it on those pesky little bills and living expenses?? :lol
 
Well, in keeping up with my commission work I've managed to finally squeak in a couple of all-nighters to get half way through this next shot. It's been a daunting task to say the least and I'm currently running on fumes but this has been SO F*#&ing FUN!!!!! So here's a couple of teaser pics, I'll be continuing the animating marathon again tonight and hopefully should have this first segment of the shot finished by tomorrow night, Stay tuned.....
 
Everybody's support on here has really kept me going, THANKS!!!! I just finished the big running shot last night and it's now in the hands of my buddy for compositing......... stay tuned!
 
All three shots are finished and I'm just waiting on them getting edited into the original sequence for the final unveiling. Guy, I'm looking for the right material to transform Luke for ya. Here's a teaser pic of the end of the last element shot
