Emperors Royal Guard

Hi all i am beginning my Royal Guard build, and I've some problems selecting the correct fabric. The CRL on the 501st specifies for velvet... but the velvet I've found seems nothing like the movies

If some one could help out and choose between what I've found i will be very thankful.

Ive found 2 types of velvet.
"Crystal velvet" which is really shiny, really soft, "slightly furry" , plus they look quite dark, Unless it is under direct sunlight.

Or "synthetic velvet" which is more matte looking, but it very very "short haired" , and thus has a feel like suede or micro fiber. But it is very very light and has a plasticky polyester back lining, im afraid it doesnot drope or drape properly asi may be to light.

So which should I use? The crystal one or the synthetic one ... Considering I am looking for 501st approval.

Heres a comparison side by side.

Hey Mate,

I would be inclined to go for the first one. It took me 6 months to find the right velvet ( limited options in Australia ). I would post this post over on the Sovereign Protectors Page, and the Guards will give you a yay or nay.

Thanks man, I registered at the forcepike forum like a month ago but have not heard from them.

Join the Facebook page: 501st Sovereign Protectors Detachment and ask there. You will get a quicker response. Let me know how you go and I can help you along before you buy the fabric.

Having been researching these costumes actively for close to twenty years now... *heh* I'll start with "which version of Guard are you doing?" I've run into some hardheadedness on the part of the last head of the Sovereign Protectors Detachment (that I knew of -- dunno if someone else is in now). The original fabric was ~20-oz. cotton velour -- the kind of fabric used to make theater curtains. Very heavy and wonderfully drapey. They got it in white and custom-dyed it in-house. The down side is that it tends to be about $30 a yard (even in red).

The best alternative I found a decade and a half ago was plush triple velvet. It has the right weight and richness of color, even if it's technically a bit too shiny. But at least it's only $8 a yard. The other downside is it tends to be narrow enough one needs to make the back panel of the ROTJ/AOTC version in two pieces, rather than one, which the wider fabric of the originals allows. This is, of course, not a problem for the ROTS/Rebels version.

Haha! I knew it could not be real (silk) velvet! And was coming to a conclusion it had to be cotton velvet! The problem I've had is local fabric stores only have one option. So I guess I'll have more luck looking in upholstery stores and shops.
I want the Rogue One look, basically because i don't like the bright red nor velvet gloves

Thanks a lot Jonah!. I can't believe the RPF has been more helpful than the sovereign protectors forum. All they said was "stay away from halloween costume type fabric" ... :^L ... "really" helpful [not].

Well, I my budget really "is" limited, but by all means , pass it on! If it's right I just might break my piggy bank.

Also I found an upholstery velvet in Mexico City, which is closer to me, and it might do the trick, check it out and let me know what you think, it is $14 usd per yard, and I think i need like 10 yards. So $140 bucks ain't exactly cheap just for outer fabric. At least for me, but is certainly better than $30/yard.

Since Photobucket is stupid now and I'm still getting my Flickr set up, let's see if I can link a picture from Facebook...

That's the $8/yd. (synthetic) plush triple velvet I mentioned, so you can see the color, shine, and weight. Think that would work for you?
