I now have a really awesome Hal 9000 replica...but I need a way to light it...cheap and easy. Any suggestions? I really don't know alot about soldering and wiring.
Just looking to maybe gut something and use it or find something.
thanks
mike

not sure how well it would work, cause i really dont know crap about wiring or anything either, but at walmart by the checkouts they have these thing called fingerlights or something to that effect, its a little led flashlight with some velcro to strap it to your finger, they are like 3 bucks, not sure how many different colors they have, or even if they have red, but i know ive seen some blue ones around, again i dunno if it will work, but its only 3 bucks, so it might be worth a try

I've got several of those lights and they are all blue, only the body color is different. :(

I'd suggest going to Radio Shack and looking for a kit. Or go to the stoy store and see if there is something with a working super bright LED that you can cannibalize.

Go to radioshack and get:

1 Regular or Superbright Red LED, doesn't really matter which

1 9v battery clip

1 pack of resisitors around 300ohms 1/4 watt

You'll also need:

some wire if you don't have any

A wire wrap tool if you don't have a soldering iron

electrical tape couldn't hurt

All you need to do is hook the red wire of the battery clip to the anode of the LED, hook one of the resistors to the cathode of the led and then hook the black wire to the other end of the resistor. If you plug the battery in and it doesn't light up you probably got the LED backwards. If it's really dim the resistor's too high and you need to drop down to something around 200 ohms. You can also buy an LED, post the info on it and I'll tell you what size resisitor you need. There's also a ton of website explaining resistor selection for LEDs, I recommend the tutorial over on starshipmodeler.com

They also carry a small clip-on booklight at Wal-mart for $1.47. I get those and replace the white LED with a red one. Comes with a nice little switch that I place on the side.

Here are a couple of pics of the setup.
