Edge of Tomorrow - EXO SUIT - Build Thread

Here's another pic of Dog Soldier Helmet. I made a few more adjustments.

I am facing some issues with parts that are too big to be CNC-milled or 3D printed on my exo-suit project. Just got off the phone with an engineer that suggested splitting some of the parts in half so they can fit in the mill/printer. It's possible you will need to revise some parts to be put together from smaller pieces. Looks like you have an awesome Solidworks skill though, it took you a month to do more than twice the work I've done in 7 months for my project :)

Well, any good engineer would do all the splitting work for you, but this is a common thing in the world of CNC and 3d Printing. We're lucky enough to have a few large machines in house that really make this type of stuff easy. I really enjoy working in solidworks. Its one of my favorite modeling programs. Good luck on your exo project!

Awesome work so far. I wish I had some big 3d printers/ cnc machines lol anyone want to send me one for Christmas!? :D lol I'll be watching (subscribed).

I also love thi Idea of building an exo-suit of some kind, and the ones from Edge of tomorrow are pretty awesome...so is your progress!
Watching the end-credits of the movie I thought they would make an eccellent source for remodeling some details, since they show a very nice wireframe-model of the suit in exploded view, etc. Did you use any of that as a reference?

on the software side: Did you try other CAD-Software and found Solid Works to work best? Or do you just have it at work??
I see some 3D-Printing and CNC-Milling in my future and want to work my way into a software which enables me to do both precise engineering AND freeform-stuff... any thoughts on that?

I didn't use the end credits as reference because the movie hasn't been available for me to view outside of the theaters until now. I will revisit that scene when my blu ray comes in, but I used plenty of other references.

I've been working solidworks for some time now and we do have it at the shop. Its for precise engineering, its not for free form stuff. You kind of have to pick one or the other really. I work in a pretty big list of 3d programs so I just use the tools that fit the job. It just so happens I found out later that the group who designed the actual suits used solidworks as well. So that was kind of cool to find out.

Good luck with your en-devours!

Thanks Neil! That means a lot. I tried my best to be as accurate as possible. I just bought the BluRay. It arrives today I'm going to go over the credits screen where they rotate the model and make sure I don't see any obvious things I need to fix. Then I'll start making one. I'm thinking of making a 1/6 scale version too. I think that would be awesome!

A couple of other people who worked on the original suit design and build have mentioned your thread to me :) .. saying what a great job you've done so far!

wow Amazing. I'm totally impressed.
When I first saw this post I thought it was the real Solidworks model. I should know I was one of the 5 cad designer who drew it. It was a real rush job because the costume designer kept changing things. So we roughed out the model then split it up and each worked on our own bits. I was the first time I'd ever designed like Like that.
Can't say I enjoyed it but we did get it done.
I did the chest, back pack battery pack, feet ankles, angel wings, and the tank armer pack pack. I was suppose to be doing her suit but ended up jumping on to hand props. I can't share the actual CAD files AK-Finnal suit assem (3).jpgbut I can post images (stills) if there are bit you get stuck on but I must say your doing really well.
I'd have to put the model back together as the files are in a mess. it was an intense job as we 3D printed everything.

I joined the RPF quite a wile ago but never had any time to look around. but I've been lurking around this week and its made me look through all my old work, its been quite nostalgic tom in suit with wings.jpg

That is mechanical pron right there! Love it.

Was this setup the final one that was in the movie or was it changed afterwards?

Yes, every time we finished a part we handed it to Matt Sims in the art department who would up date the 3d studio model we kept for approvals and pre'vis. funny thing is I've still not even seen the film :-(.

I have all the peaces and I did have a exploded drawing that we printed out to show Tom how complicated and how many pieces made up each suit. Each part was drawn as an injection moulded part. then 3d printed vacuum moulded in clear urethane the Adrian Getly ( mould supervisor) had a team on a conveyer belt injecting each mould. the material he used was designer for prototype car fenders. it went of in 3 seconds from injection so we could demould at the end of the line.
So the colour of the suit was the base of the plastic with wash's to add detail. I'm not sure how many suits where made in the end but I know 100 was the first target, so a production line was the only way. Any one who works on movie will know that a 100 people disappear on a large set , so it wouldn't look like a lot . as the tank suit consisted of panels added to a normal suit we could mix and match a bit.DSC00667.JPGthis is the blue foam mock up of the tank suit

Holy crap how did I miss this? This thread just got awesome! Thanks flimzy for all the complements. Those references are awesome! I've got some changes to make. The back side was always the hardest because all the images out there were so low res and had bad angles. I did the best I could with what I had, but these pics are just blowing my mind. The chest on that one looks like the early version that tom was test fitting with. So cool to see some of the behind the scenes on this. Just fantastic work on those cad models!
