Economical Flux Capacitor

Anyone bought this?

Ukonic Flux Capacitor

The differences and short-comings are clear...

Just not really wild on dropping a grand on the Factory Entertainment replica.

And following ole' RPF traditions, it would not be hard to improve on this... Not to make it perfect - that would be difficult - but to improve it.

Impressions?

For 60 bucks it's not a bad shelf display item. For 200 it's completely out of the question. With some ebay hunting and a trip to the hardware store you could have a 90% screen accurate look for about $200.

I bought one. Good enough to display at shows and for gigs. I'm going to paint it and use correct labels to make it more accurate.

Exactly my sentiments, and the home-build is going to look a lot better too.

I had one but returned it because the lights are so different from the movie. In the movie, the flux capacitor lights all have relatively similar brightness and seem to quickly "chase" each other inward toward the center, and the unit itself seems barely to give off much light. The Ukonic replica, on the other hand, gives the impression of one flickering bright light slowly moving toward the center, and it's both brighter and less warm than the actual flux capacitor. Of course I realize it's not meant to be a true replica, more of an homage to the prop, but based on some of the LED products I've seen, I think they could have and should have done more to make the actual lights have a similar "feel" to the film version.

I used to have the ThinkGeek flux capacitor phone charger in my car, and that was awesome. The way my cigarette lighter charging port was positioned, it fit perfectly to be visible below the dashboard. It eventually conked out.

Screen accurate labels, painted the box a dark battleship gray and the backing plate black. Looks alot better than it did out of the box.
