I remember one tech manual (may have been a general sf weapons manual, rather than specifically Trek) that showed when phaser one was in use, it was heald backwards, as in, the beam for phaser one came out of the back of the small unit, the beam for phaser two came out of the front. Mind you, I think this is a load of dingo's kidneys.

I think the Klingon "phaser" from ST IV takes that award.

The TMP/TWOK may not be the most exciting, but I think it's the most
believable as a futuristic design. Simple and functional, no crap added on
to make it "cool".

I always thought the Motion Picture and WRATH KAHN phaser looked squat and stumpy. At least the new movie phaser has some interesting angles and lines on it - but hey, that's just me.

But what attracted me to the original Trek props were that they looked so different than anything I had ever seen before in a sci-fi movie.

I'd rather have something interesting and more unusual design-wise than a smooth uninteresting shape.

But hey, that's just me.
