Dredd and Hershey Helmet build up

Nicely done! They look great. I love your idea for mounting the visor...much better than hot glue!! Checking this thread out made me go and buy another Dredd helmet for myself. I started to miss the one I sold a while back :)

I think I prefer the blue that you went with over mine. I approached my paint job differently this time...laying down the blue first. Hopefully it won't darken the red too much. When I paint the red I'll use 3mm fineline to mask the blue hero strip. It'll be harder to mask around the front of the 'crest' though.

Just out of interest, what blue did you use? Mine is Peugeot Indigo Blue over a black base coat.

Let me know if you are going to vacuum metalise the badges. I'm getting mine done. I have a great place in Birmingham that puts those shoddy b******s at VMC to shame.

Cheers

Wow mate, love the finish on that. I know what you mean about the hero stripe and the badge section, that was not fun masking out lol. And thanks for the compliments on the visor, I was doing a fett helmet at the time and thought it would work on the dredd, had to improvise on washers though.

As for the colours I actually went with the same colours you used on your old Dredd helmet thread, its been like a Bible to me while I painted these. Colours were BMW Zinobar Red and Ford royal blue, I did about 3 layers of each colour and buffed it over between each coat with some wet and dry, then hit it with a final coat. I think that darkened the blue a bit.

As for the badges that would be great, The helmets are for super trooper on here and we talked about getting them done by a place near me, but they wouldnt do it on such a small batch. The helmets are in the garage at the moment getting lacquered and I was thinking of painting the badges and getting them lacquered as well, but if you could do that that would be awesome. Could you PM me some details?

Thanks

Get your badges ready and we can sort something out. They need to be 2-pack primed to get the best results from vac-metalising. I can get that sorted for you if you when lacquer my helmet and tinted visor interior.

Thanks for the colour info...I didn't actually bother to check my old thread...I just went through my cans in the shed and assumed I'd found the same blue I used last time :behave I'm going to have to hit it with a fresh top coat of the correct colour.

hey guys, i live in Birmingham so if you need me to hand deliver and collect the helmet badges id be happy to do that, i have a Dredd Belt Buckle that needs vac metalising too so i could do this all together

Nice thinking Si,
The helmets are in the garage ATM which I'm to pick up Wednesday after they have been lacquered, I'll try and get the visors and interiors finished by the weekend, then if you want I can send you the helmet and the badges together to be vac mettalized. All you would have to do is attach them and the helmets are finished?

Unless you would want me to mount the badges?

Cheers for doing this vos, as for the 2 pack primer I take it that it needs to be done professionally with spray guns, or can you buy it in an aerosol?

That looks excellent. I saw a few Judges at Dragon*con. This year with the UKCM.

Are you making full suites or just the helmets?

2K is a 2-part paint/hardener that needs to be applied through a gun.

You can buy something described as '2K' in an aerosol. It has similar build and finishing qualities, but obviously there is no separate hardener.

Something like this:

If you painted them with this, then wet'n'dried them, you should get a top VM finish.

This might even be worth a look...

Otherwise get the bodyshop that is doing your lacquer to 2pack the badges.

Ahh brilliant Vos, I think I will go with the rattle can then hit it though various wet and Dry paper. Im not sure whats going to happen now, im thinking when ive finished the helmets and prepped the badges, to send them all to Supertrooper and he can then either send the badges to you with your stuff or drop them in. We will have to work it out.

Thanks Judge max, kinda daunting taking on something that requires a perfect finish, with the boba stuff you can afford to make a mistake or two but not on these :eek
I see your in south wales, where to are you located mate?

Right then, I got a call today that the helmets were all finished and I could pick them up. Couldnt pick a better day as it was my only day off from Uni. Well when I got there I couldnt have imagined any better, and sadly my crappy photo skills do not do these justice, they are perfect;

The lacquer is brilliant, super shiny and as smooth as glass. Its touch dry but not completely hardened. After a few days I can then go to work on them with some wax to really make them pop.

I was also given some padding by Si to use for the interior of the helmet. For this I wanted to go a little screen accurate with the padding and the back of the lid, then use the stuff I was given to fill out the helmet and make it look pretty.
For the three big padded sections I cut them out of foam, then wrapped them in black fabric and have lightly glued them in place. The other bits you see are from the knee pads I was given, cut up to fit better.

Still need to tweak then slightly and neaten up certain parts, but thats the way the layout is going to look. The helmet now cannot be worn anymore unless you remove all the padding, the helmet was already small as the helmet is to scale of the original, and Stallone had a tiny head.

So now all I need to do is pad out the Hershey lid and fix the screws in for the visor, and then just to prep the badges for the vac metal process. Again ignore the visor in the Dredd lid, it will be changed for a more accurate one.

OH MY GOD !!!!!!!!!!!! i seriously have just wet my pant's they have turned out amazing, you are indeed very talented and a little star

Whoop whoop whoop

Those are looking beautiful! Awesome work!

I remember when that movie came out all my friends hated it but I thought it was a lot of fun. The costumes and props were excellent, and the ABC robot kicked ass. That's still a dream build for me - one day I will have an ABC robot that moves its head and says "Warrrr" lol

Anyway, great job again. I've really enjoyed the build :)

Thanks Si, really happy that you like the helmets, at the end of the day its your opinion that really maters to me and Im glad your happy. Thanks for considering in for the paint job :)

Thanks steamtech, means alot.

Now I hope Si dosent mind, but having a look around there dosent seem to be many Dredd lids with the microphone. And being that this helmet is solely a display piece I though I would go ahead and add one. Its not screen accurate, nor is it finished, but I think it looks good. Its not movable so is permanently fixed in that position, but it could be removed easily with a bit of force.

Weather depending, tomorrow I want to get some inside and outside shots of the Dredd helmet with the better visor in and to show off the lacquer finish. May even wax it as well lol

Well I managed to get a break in the weather to get some nice outside shots of the helmet. Ive now also put in a different visor (still need to neaten up the edge of it) and gave it a good buff over and then some wax (hence the white bits in the gaps, my bad)

Ive also gone and neatened up the interior but couldn't get a good picture of it. All that needs doing now on him is to give the microphone another coat of paint and he's done. Forgive the washing line in the reflection, I didn't realize it would be that shiny :lol But thats pretty much all I can do with the Dredd helmet now, aside from getting the badge vac metalized he's done on my part. What do you guys think?

I'll be working on Hershey now over the weekend, then both of these can go off to supertrooper. Really enjoyed painting these up.
Thanks,

I'm looking to get my Dredd helmet badge coated as well, but I've tried various companies here in Ireland and there's no one willing to even try :(

Any hints, guys? Only saw the thread today!

I owned a few of the screen used dredd helmets and I have to say, you really knocked these out of the park.. Perfect job!
