Dracks Ironman MK VI Build (helmet update)

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Foam Build (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

I had trouble with my taping pulling paint off too.

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Foam Build

I had trouble with my taping pulling paint off too.

The accents on the back and the chest, the gold and silver, did you paint then freehand or did yoy tape off around and spray paint? Every time i tape the paint peels right off

I sprayed the gold and silver and yes I masked it off. The trick is to wait at least 24 hours for the paint to dry before masking or it will pull the paint off. Also if you are using PVA as your sealer then you can't mask off cause the PVA will peal off the foam. It doesn't seem to have the adhesive properties needed to stick (I learnt this the hard way with my first ironman helmet). If you are using plastidip as your sealer then like I said just wait 24+ hours for your first coat of spray to dry then you should be ok.

Looks good, really interested to see how the cast comes out of your mould. My foam helmet had a lot of leaks in it and other bits that came out in the mould and cast, but your looks a lot cleaner.

Thanks James. Hopefully the mould should turn out ok but I know I have some work to do on the cast because of the expanding foam gass incident. It did leave some of the top part of the helmet a little worse for wear. A quick sand, fill and resand should sort it though.

Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! True talent!!!

Tank you man!!!!!! :)

Small update.

Nearly ready! :)

Money saver for those fibre glassing. Buy a Brush like this. Once the resin dries you just pull it off the bristles :)

Mini update of sorts.

The mould is now done! All looks good inside so hopefully if the wife allows it I will go for a cast today as she has jobs for me. Took longer than I wanted to get the mother mould done cause typically the temperature dropped here so there was lots of waiting for the fan heater to work it's magic. I did how ever run out of resin so couldn't get on as may layers of fibre glass as I had hoped, good thing was I had a big tin of body filler laying around so slapped a load on last night and it did the trick. Advantage of this is no sharp glass fibres to contend with.

Well guys hopefully later I will have a cast to post up for you :)

amazing. tempting me to try foam instead of my pep fibreglass effort

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Foam Build (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

Thank you man :)
Question for those that have cast their armour out there. Once the piece is cast do you use anything special to clean it with or just house hold washing up liquid?

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Foam Build (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

dish soap works, and a wipe down before painting with denatured alcohol never hurts.

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Foam Build (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

Thank you man. Cast is cleaned and ready for a good going over. I know that after the sanding I have to do I would probably remove the silicone residue but it's always better to be safe that sorry.

Thanks for the links in the 1st post Drack, much appreciated.

Great work on the suit, gives me hope that I can pull something like this off too when I get round to grabbing the bitts.

Very nice, looks amazing. GREAT idea regarding the Silicone brush for applying resin!

Casting update :)

So here is my first cast. I am happy with it enough to be able to do some filling and sanding to arrive at a finished helmet. I will cast, refine and remould another perfect version so I have a mould for proper casts later.

*Jumps up and down* at how well it came out for a first try and from a foam master at that :)

Thank you and glad I could help with the brush tip. It makes so much more sense than using normal brushes as you cant exactly clean the resin out of them.

No worries man. I try to help out and show people how all this is done as much as I can. I remember what it was like when first started out and took me ages to get all the knowledge I have so may as well share the love :)

Looks really good

Cheers man.

Thanks for watching.

Once I have the gloves and boots repulsors done I will be flying them to you all personally of course :p

This is one of the best builds I have seen. Really makes me want to give it a shot. I really want to see a bigger guys suit first before I do it. I'm 6 foot 2 and 130 kilos most suits I have seen the guys are skinny.

Well thanks man. I dunno about the best though there are some truely amazing PEPed Ironman builds out there but I would like to think that I rank up there with some of top foam builds. As for being a bigger chap then maybe the warmachine would be best suited for you as they lend nicely to a more sturdier build :)

Cheers James. That means a lot coming from you seeing as your build is in a league of its own.

Thanks for watching.

You would never know that helmet came from a foam lid Drack; cracking work mate. Love seeing these updates.
Keep it up dude! :)

That is a great idea mate, thanks for that. I have seen a few Ironman's kicking around my local scene but no War Machines. Well time to start looking at the Tuts and the files!
