Dracks Ironman MK VI Build (helmet update)

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Build. (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

Hello Mr. Drack, just wanted to let you know, as soon as I start building a suit, I am definitely using all this wholesome nutritious information. Thank you.

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Build. (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

it's not a resin, it doesn't make it rigid.

It's a rubberised coating. People use it to seal the foam before painting.
Make sure to research the products before you buy them

Thanks stealth! That answers a lot of my questions. That is kind of what i suspected but i wanted to be sure. I suppose more research would have also turned up an answer for me. But i do appreciate the answer!

Your videos are awesome btw, super helpful.

Glad I could help guys. I remember what it was like when I first started my costume making journey and although all the info is out there it takes a while to hunt all this stuff down so thought I would just get it all in one place. I think when I quit my job I will sit down and do a much more thorough thread on all things needed and why they are used.

Well glad Stealth could answer your question even though I would have said the same, highjacker :p
When I do my proper foam building thread I will have to go into more detail on each product you use and why/how. I think I will do it in a format similar to Clivelee's gundam tutorial thread as its one of the best out there. Not mention his work is truely outstanding.

Thanks for watching and all the great comments,
Tom.

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Build. (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

Hey Drack,

Just thought I would throw in some ideas here. When I was sourcing my foam for my build, I could not get the EVA foam mats in the thickness I wanted so I went to a local foam supplier and picked up some closed cell from sheets that were 6mm thick. I also asked what is the most rigid they have in that thickness. They came out with an 80kg/m2 sheet (not sure what the standard foam mats are but I believe they aren't as dense as this). It cost around AU$30 so it was a good price and the foam seemed like a good density.

The interesting part, is that in all the tutorials I have watched and forums read, I keep hearing that using blunt blades causes the foam to club/tear or ball up. So I started to take note on how many blades people go through and how many I have. On one particular build, the guy said that he went through something like 5-6 blades on the chest plate alone. Now I have built the chest, back, brace, arms, abs and cod and I have only gone through a maximum of 10 blades.

So from my observations, using a denser foam means that it is structurally more stable therefore a clean cut doesn't have to be done with an exceptionally sharp blade.

Since you seem to be quite adept at making good clean cuts, I thought you would be the perfect guy to test this theory.

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Foam Build

It's still rubs the ego up the right way to hear it though :)

I got it from plastidip.co.uk. It is costly but like I said a 2.5ltr can is still going and here is everything I have made so far.

Hold on a minute, you made all of that, including the halo suit, with one 2.5ltr tin of plastidip?

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Build. (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

Yep everything I have made has been under coated with that one tin and its still going and I have a metre long MA5C assault rifle for the halo suit too :)

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Build. (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

Doesn't seem such bad value for money now since one 2.5ltr tin shall cost me €52.47 before postage.

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Build. (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

Hey drack just wondering if you used the same pepakura templates as the ones for Xrobot?
Also can the foam be heat bent like plastazote?
I was just wondering because I was going to start doing a suit and while your method looks cheaper and the quality looks pretty similar he does have a tutorial. So I was just wondering if the gym mats could be used in the same way.

Thanks

I am not sure if I used the same files as James did but pretty sure I did. I used these, I used the first of the helmets in the thread.

The plastizote and EVA foam are pretty much the same thing. I used EVA for all the build except the helmet as the plastizote is much easier to use but has the draw back of needing PVA layers to seal it before plastidiping it. The EVA can be heat gunned too. In fact it's less likely to melt as much as the plastizote cause its more dense.

Hope this helps,
Tom.

Thank you man. If you take your time and plan out every last detail before starting a piece then you should be able to :)

Lol dude. You will just have to drive round Cornwall till you hear some one sanding and cursing (obsessing on helmet perfection, its close now :))
The red I used is Nightfire Red Pearl. I just sprayed it on after plastidiping it. Once I am finish I am going to either paint by hand or buy an air brush just to add some definition/shading.

ugh....I forgot you made that hardcore gravity hammer.... I want to make that this year. I'm hoping the recon chest comes out for foam because I would like to do a foam Halo build. I'm using your snap idea for my shoulders btw.... Your stuff looks soooooo good.... Cheers!! :cheers

The wait for the new Halo pep is an annoying one I am sure. There is so much with this release it must be very demanding of the modellers on 405th. With the snaps I would recommend getting really good strong holding ones as they can pop open with movement. On my shoulders (pics on page 6, post #131) I fixed the top centre with webbing for strength but a bit of give so when I raise my arms the shoulders moved up. Then on the inside of the "hinge" parts I glued snaps to elastic so that when you lower your arms they are pulled back into place.

i love those ideas. . .gonna apply this to my new suits. . . :lol cheers!

Cheers man :)
Your suits are awesome, I particularly like the new MK 8 you built. Always have respect for you guys that can make suits with out pep.

Thanks a lot :)

Final question, for the scaling, most of it is pretty straight forward but for the chest I was wondering which measurement you base the scale on, like do you base it around the overal height/length?

I used width for my chest scaling. It's easiest to use as you just measure from one side to the other. Obviously making sure you don't go to far so you still have room for arm movement.

Also the chest is the easiest part to scale in my opinion. I found all the other pieces so far need a bit more thought. I am thinking the boots will be pretty easy too.

Thank you for providing so many great and useful tips! I hope to apply them to my first build here soon. I decided that I am going to dive into this today so now I just need to build up a little courage and, of course, some supplies!

Thanks again and fantastic work!

No worries man. I know what it's like when first starting out and having to search around loads of threads to piece together enough knowledge to even start a suit so thought I would try to get enough together to make its easier on first timers. When I leave my job in a few months I am going to attempt to do a more thorough guide on a seperate thread.

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Build. (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

Thanks so much! Well, I've ordered the foam now so I should be able to get started this weekend!
