Dr. Fate helmet

Hey guys. Been awhile since I've posted something. Thought I'd throw this over here.

DC Direct made a prototype for a Dr. Fate helmet ... but has never released it...and that pissed me off.

So I started to compare a few versions of the helmet in the comics, con pictures, and other places.

And then I asked a friend of mine if he wanted to take this beast on...which he thankfully did.

Slappin the clay on...

He's shoot me pictures back and forth and I'd critique..you know how it goes...Some times an extra set of eyes can see littly symmetry quirks and other stuff. Talk about a great artist!

And finally...a pull!

So my friend sent me the plaster mold...and I did some research trying to find something that slushed but would end up rigid so I could paint it.

Chicago Latex has a rigid latex that I bought and did a pull from.

So I bought the "rigid casting latex" and poured 10 layers over 2 weeks into it then let it sit for an additional 2 days. The good news is that it came out like a champ and is fairly hard. The bad news is that it's not fiberglass rigid like I'd hoped.

I have some 1:1 ratio mix of liquid plastic that I might try coating it with. I also might try resin for giggles. Of course fiber is an option but the IM project would be enough of that, dont you think? ha ha.

Here are the pics:

Turns out that it takes paint like a CHAMP. I sprayed a layer of sandable primer paint on it and it stuck very well.

I'm hopeful that it'll take a gold coat at some point.

sort of has a Spartan look to it. Your friend did a great job. Can't wait to see it with the gold paint. Even better if you can get that gold chrome paint like the first pic.

Sweet. Can't wait to see it done, Dr. Fate is one of my favorite characters. Something about those magic guys.

Y'know, I've never been a fan of the character really but I have always loved that Dr. Fate's costume and the helmet design in particular. Maybe I'm just obsessed with helmets with 'fins' or something. But whatever the reason - that's very cool IMHO!

I really love this character, that's why this helmet is #2 of 3 that I'll end up having! I have a full-face retro Dr. Fate helmet, and the beginnings of a half-mask version (it's missing the characteristic fin) and a paint job.

Thanks for the enthusiasm guys. I'll post it once it's gold.

are you painting it gold? or getting it plated? this helmet looks sick sir, awesome job

G

I'm using Krylon Premium Gold Foil + Saddlelac shellac - which is pretty darn good, although I'm tempted to send it to CreationsNChrome since they do an even better job of getting that chrome plated finish.

We'll see how the Krylon turns out.

I really want to see how this turns out. Dr Fate's helm would be awesome in any home

by the by you see Dr Fate in the Smallvile trailer for the up and coming JSA episode?

Oh yeah man totally saw that. Don't love the leather armor, but love the gloves, amulet and helmet :)

That is very slick Alfred. Now clean up that seam.:thumbsup

I've spent a LOT of time learning about the best paints to get the mirror chrome look, but I wont bore you with the long diatribe. RPF members are a cut above.

This paint was off-the-shelf Krylon Premium Gold Foil Metallic spraypaint in the slender can with a pre-coat of Krylon glass texture spray.

A mouse sander would sort that seam out no problems :)

I do like how it looks a bit like the Spartan helmet from 300.
