Hey guys. Been awhile since I've posted something. Thought I'd throw this over here.
DC Direct made a prototype for a Dr. Fate helmet ... but has never released it...and that pissed me off.
So I started to compare a few versions of the helmet in the comics, con pictures, and other places.
And then I asked a friend of mine if he wanted to take this beast on...which he thankfully did.
Slappin the clay on...
Getting started...
Refining...
He's shoot me pictures back and forth and I'd critique..you know how it goes...Some times an extra set of eyes can see littly symmetry quirks and other stuff. Talk about a great artist!
And finally...a pull!
So my friend sent me the plaster mold...and I did some research trying to find something that slushed but would end up rigid so I could paint it.
Chicago Latex has a rigid latex that I bought and did a pull from.
So I bought the "rigid casting latex" and poured 10 layers over 2 weeks into it then let it sit for an additional 2 days. The good news is that it came out like a champ and is fairly hard. The bad news is that it's not fiberglass rigid like I'd hoped.
I have some 1:1 ratio mix of liquid plastic that I might try coating it with. I also might try resin for giggles. Of course fiber is an option but the IM project would be enough of that, dont you think? ha ha.
Here are the pics:
Turns out that it takes paint like a CHAMP. I sprayed a layer of sandable primer paint on it and it stuck very well.
I'm hopeful that it'll take a gold coat at some point.
