Dr. Doom Build...WIP...(newbie at this)

After the resin cured, I proceeded to use a dremel to grind down any high areas and resin icicles. It worked alot better and more precise than using sand paper like I had started out with. Here are pics of some of that progress.

I was now ready to apply a sculpting material to get my details in. I think most on here use bondo and rondo, but BSD had found this great stuff on a site called smooth on. We are using an epoxy putty called "air". It is very workable and easy to apply. Simply mix equal amounts of A and B add water to smooth and viola. I just ordered another product from smooth on called earth epoxy putty. It is supposed to be more like a clay like I'm used to working with.

I drew out some guide lines with a sharpie so that I applied the epoxy in controlled areas and amounts to keep it all symmetrical. Not a necessary thing to do, but it helped a great deal i believe.

Now for the epoxy apply...I started to do the sculpt as the original game design, but I didn't feel that it represented Dr. Doom correctly. Don't get me wrong, everything is open to artistic enterpretation, but I felt it was lacking core "DOOMNESS". Doom has harder lines in his mask and I changed the sculpt more toward my sketch and a classic Doom. I will post a pic of my sketch at a later time...

Really nice work.

I love seeing people's costumes, and Doom in particular, and I have a lot of sympathy and respect for folks even when they are less than successful... And for whatever reason, the vast majority of Dr Doom helmets I've seen have been on the sad side...

But, man, you are killing it. Can't wait to see how this turns out. So far it is looking pretty incredible.

Excellent work sir. The sculpting is sharp. Was the putty hard to work with? (I am not much of a sculptor so I am curious.)

Welcome to the RPF. Its great to see a new member working on another costume build, and it looks Great! Gonna need some sanding though :)

Thank you for the kind words of encouragement. Much appreciated. I feel much the same way you do about other Doom builds I have seen. Much respect to them for effort, but didn't care for the final product. Hopefully it turns out the way I intend for it to. Keep an eye out for more posts coming soon.

Thank you. The putty was a little hard to get a feel for at first for getting the right consistency with water, but after you get the hang of it, it is easier to control your sculpt. I had too much water at first when applying to the putty to the skull. It ran a lil and spread too thin. I adjusted The amount of water and it worked out well...I am exited to try the other smooth on "earth" epoxy. It is supposed to act more like clay...we will see.

Yes it is lol. I don't know exactly when you are supposed to start sanding, but I figured I would just wait until I had built the epoxy putty up and then just cut the details in and sand and smooth. If I need to sand prior to that please let me know. Especially if it will save me work or hardships in the future. The putty is supposed to sand easier than bondo from what I've been told. Thanks for the critique.

Man I had started this same helmet as my first pep and it was amazing till I fiberglassed the inside it went terribly wrong if you don't mind me asking how did you go about laying your cloth in around the face and nose area tight like that because I'm loving the way yours is coming together and trust me I know all about cutting this sucker out folding and glueing so kudos for getting done with that and the putty seems to work very nice great work so far

This was my helmet

Thanks for asking. What I did was spray into the nooks and crannies with a cheap can of spray adhesive that I picked up at Fred's Store (like a dollar store). I had small strips that were slightly fitted to the areas that I was placing them and pressed the fiber cloth until the adhesive held it tight. I repeated this until all the areas were adequately covered. I then poured my mixed resin and hardener in the face and worked it around with a brush, making sure not to pour an excessive amount in. Worked pretty well I thought. One thing I noticed was that it looks like you applied resin to the inside before you coated the outside a couple times. From what I have been told, the resin shrinks as it dries up and cures. I would say that is what happened to the eye area. If you apply to the outside first, it shrinks up a little bit, but doesn't distort your paper. I haven't been doing this long at all....(first ever build)...and I don't want to step out of line by offering up advice being a newbie and all, but try that way if you are unable to repair your helmet. I have had great advice from my coworker BSD along the way so that has helped me alot. Any other questions about doing your version of the Doom helmet, just ask and I will try my best to help.

Thank and I just started peping myself so it's all good. I'm likeing the foam stuff though it easier to work with but I still have this one in the back of my mind so I mite just make a new one and give it another go

Here is something funny to look at. Before I had committed to even starting a pepakura build I was playing around with regular printer paper and built a Dr. Doom. Far cry from a pep build, but fun none the less. paper and tape and lots of smiles.

Here is an update on where I am at. This will catch me up to my current progress level. I built up the brow more, added temple depression, built up the chin to detail back in later, and built up the cheek area a little more to cut back down. With any luck, I will have it looking like my sketch in no time. Lots of work to be done yet, but I will get there eventually. Post more soon.

Believe you me, I'm keeping an eye on your progress. Really enthused for you, and to check it out along the way and in its final glory.
