DPCA Vader. Restoration and upgrade

I should soon have in my hands a really rough DPCA. It has no vent grills, tusks and needs paint work real bad. I’m only getting it because it’s a project piece and any help on sourcing tusks, grills or in general ‘tips and tricks’ would be greatly appreciate. I‘m not looking to reproduce the prop, but get it close. Thanks

Kurtyboy for grills.
Fatherless One for tusks.
Vadermonkey for lenses - though you may have to shape them to fit when you get them, as I don't know if you can even make custom fit lenses for a vinyl helmet that can warp.

Post picture of the helmet before starting work.

Thanks for the info! I’ll post as soon as I get it. It’s in rough shape, but for the price I think worth it. Any thoughts on Fenix props? My father is from Argentina as they are so it caught my eye that they have a bundle of stuff for this helmet.

I came this close to bidding on that helmet. I have been looking for a Classic Action Vader for many years to complete my collection but, like you say, that one was in really rough shape (I'm hoping to find one that hasn't been modified).

Too Much Garlic is right on the nose. I would stay away from Fenix Props. Their stuff is well made but not very accurate.

Thanks for the info. Yeah it’s rough, but I’m that guy that buys a vintage kit in the box and destroys the value by opening it! At the price it was I didn’t think I’d get it but ‘lucky’ me.

So I got my helmet today. It’s in better shape then I thought. It is a bit warped, but I think some heat can fix that. The inside needs a good scrub, but it’s gonna be a display not for wearing. As stated earlier it needs tusks and grill mesh and I’ve reached out to Fatherless and Kurtyboy. I think the gunmetal paint will make a big differenc, but what I thought was going to need filling, sanding and painting really just needs a good cleaning. ill try to get some pics up tomorrow

I remember this helmet with fondness. It was one of only two commercially available helmets that were available back in the day that looked like Vader.

I thought I hit the jackpot when I scored one off of eBay a number of years ago. It used to be my baby! I couldn't wait to paint it, swap out the lenses, and add the grill. This was the original helmet I got approved in.

One more pic...
that looks great. Any pointers on getting mine to look that nice? I paid for my grills today, Fatherless One hasn’t been around these parts since 2018 so I may need to source the tusks somewhere else. I haven’t decided if I want to change the lenses yet. I should probably stop buying stuff while I’m not working, but Vader needs his helmet!

You're going to need to remove the cheap plastic mesh, and the lenses. After removing them, you will need to carefully trim those areas with an exacto knife. My grill needed to be cleaned up quite a bit. There is also excess plastic that holds the lenses in place that you need to carefully trim away. You won't find lenses that fit perfectly. I ended up having to lightly heat mine up to reshape them in order to fit.

Sanding and priming is key to getting a good paint job. After painting the black and gunmetal segments, I took it to an auto body shop for the clear coat. Unless you've got special experience and training, I don't recommend attempting the clear coat. It's impossible to use a rattle can to get it nice glossy look. Some people recommend using spraymax 2K. The problem is, it is sometimes hit-and-miss, and you don't want to end up with orange peel.

So I was taking a look at the dome and it definitely needs a sanding as the clear coat is damaged, not to mention the orange peel. I am tempted to try and strip it instead, but don’t want to destroy the vinyl. oven cleaner? Brake fluid? Anyone got a suggestion?

Dont forget the original helmets are plagued with orange peel.

Depends on the type of paint used of course. Don't know if paint thinner would take it off. Not sure if brake fluid will damage the vinyl as it can be problematic -- I've only used it to strip paint off of resin/gelcoat and in one instance it ate through the paint and into the helmet and the other it didn't even touch the paint, lol. You might try Goof-Off Pro-Strength Graffiti Remover but, sorry to be captain obvious, test it on an inconspicuous portion. There are a variety of Goof-Off formulas so make sure the can says it will work on vinyl (made to take paint of vinyl siding so I expect the chemical formulation is different from the vinyl in the helmet).

Having to strip paint off this helmet was one of the big things that scared me off, lol. Hopefully it plays nice and strips right off.

Will be watching with great interest - have my CA from back in the day, still unmodified but keep thinking "mmaaaaaaaaybe just paint.......and tusks....and new grills........and reshape the neck.........and......"

I never did have much success reshaping the neck. I tried using a heat gun, but you've got to be careful because the plastic gets soft really fast. When I tried to decrease the neck flare, I had a hard time getting it to bend in the shape that I wanted. In the end, it didn't look a whole lot different.

I haven’t posted in a while,it I ordered some red lenses on Etsy, got tusks from Field Marshall (since I was building a Greedo Killer) and started sanding him down. I was looking at the neck and I think I am going to trim down the longer side. There is a lot of work to do but I have everything I need but the paint and a ways before I get there. I’ll try to get a pic or two up this week.

One thing that really helps these helmets is modifying the dome mount so it tilts back further, these pictures are ancient but this is mine post mod:
