Doctor Who Tennant suit fabric reweave

So a few weeks ago I sent Tony Magnoli (of Magnoli Clothiers) a couple swatches of fabric (and I believe a couple others did as well, feel free to chime in). Well, he didn't waste any time. Here's what I got in the mail from him a couple days ago.

First the blue. The original shirting swatches pictured on either side were sent to me by Steve Ricks, who managed to track down a few yards a while back. The stripe spacing on Magnoli's prototype was off by 2 mm. This has already been fixed. I think he really nailed the color, though.

And if you want to be really impressed, here's the brown. It's a bit heavier than the original stuff, but otherwise a nearly exact reweave. On the left is Primrodo's printed fabric, on the right are the Baron Boutique wool and cotton, the GAP swatch is right of center and the rewoven swatch is left of center.

And getting up really close:

Magnoli will start making his suits with these fabrics sometime in the next couple months, and he'll also be offering the fabric for sale. No word yet on pricing.

Oh wow, that looks fantastic. The color on both of them look perfect to my eyes. If I can't afford to have him make the suit for me, I'll buy the fabric for sure as I know a few people that could make it for me :D

Also, I know the brown suit was made from GAP pants but what about the blue suit? Was the fabric for that custom made?

awesome! I will have to wait for the blue then. Ive got an event coming up that i want the brown for though so im probably just going to get the baron brown as its incredibly close enough

Oh, man... I'm definitely going to buy some of this fabric. But I think I'll have Baron's make it. Of course, that depends on how my first suit with the printed fabric turns out from them.

if he sells the fabric that would be amazing
cause ive been wanting to make Tennants suit
but i need the perfect material first

The blue material was originally a shirting cotton. It's the lighter of the two background fabrics in the blue photos. They dyed over it with blue to make it darker and interfaced it to make it heavier before making the suits. Magnoli went ahead and made it the right color and weight right off the bat.

Ahhh, thanks for the info. I always wondered if it was just custom or something. Gotta love the Doctor Who folk and their ability to find out just about anything regarding the show.

For the first picture of the blue material, which is Barons and which is the new Magnoli material? I don't know which is which!

Haven't Magnoli's suits been priced about $100 more than Barons' suits? How about the fit and fabrication quality? I would like the suit to be fairly rugged after all.

Baron doesn't have a blue fabric yet. The swatches in those pictures are Magnoli's prototype in the center and the original shirting material (lighter) and overdyed shirting material (darker).

Thanks - so the darker overdyed shirting material on the right will be used by Magnoli for his blue Tennant suit?

My word.. I've said it in other Doctor who costume threads and I'll say it again here. I really wish I'd found this place 2 years ago when I was finding my brother a replica of the brown suit. The level of detail you guys find is astounding!

No, the small swatch in the middle is what Magnoli sent me. It had a spacing issue, which I brought to his attention, and the final product will be corrected. He hasn't woven his yardage yet, just those little swatches. The lighter blue is the original blue shirting material used by the production, it's nearly impossible to find. And the darker one is the same stuff that's been dyed darker just like the BBC did when making Tennant's suit. The material Magnoli will be using and selling will be the same as the middle swatch, but with correct spacing.

I bet my real-life buddy (and former roommate until we lost it all in the flood) JediAgent will be interested in a blue suit.

what do you think of the new doctor ?

I enjoy the new Doctor's shows immensely - I record them if I'm going to be out so I don't miss them.

However, I think Tennant's Doctor certainly had a more stylish flair with the coat and suit! I particularly liked his siliness and enthusiasm. I'm still wondering if Ten.5 ( who went to the alternate universe with Rose) could return one day. That could be cool.

Cheers!

That's fantastic news! Definitely would love to get a blue suit from Magnoli. He made my brown suit and it fit like a well-tailored glove!

PS: Thanks, Spaz, for pointing this thread out to me!

I'm over a month late to this party, but I've gotta say, this is quite excellent news. I'm off to Magnoli's site to have a look-see.

Any updates on it? I'm hoping to get a Tennant suit for my friend's wedding in September, and I've had several people tell me that the blue would look better on me than the brown.
