Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

Have you considered doing the Doctor's and Master's fob watches? Just the closed cases with the Gallifreyan script would be pretty sweet as static display pieces...

If the Master's Ring turns out decent, I'll probably get to it. I'm sort of OCD when it comes to things like this - I feel obligated to complete the set. There are other TV shows and movies I'd like to get to eventually but once I get going I have a hard time stopping and my work will suffer, lol.

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

Exciting news! I got the prototype for the 9th and 11th Doctor's sonic screwdrivers today! They're very smooth compared to what I thought they'd be, being polyamide, but that's why I ordered the "polished" variant.

Initial reaction: this one is near perfect, as far as I'm concerned. It feels sturdy, looks smooth and crisp, and all seems the right size/proportions.

Potential improvements: the "seams" between the main handle and "metal" parts lost it's detail during the polishing, it seems. When compared to the seam between the emitter head and neck, they're lacking. I plan to make these a little bit wider and a tad deeper to show up similarly to the real seam made by fitting the two pieces together. The nibs around the push button, as well as the button itself, also seem to have lost some definition with the polishing. These I plan to make a bit deeper as well.

Initial reaction: It looks pretty badass in pieces and I got excited just thinking about how it would all fit together. I was surprised how well the texture on the extender posts showed up, especially considering how some detail was lost on the 9th sonic. The main posts on the two joining top pieces were a little warped, but not deformed - just leaning a bit, which is nothing that won't be corrected when assembled.

Potential improvements: Right off the bat, I had trouble getting the two top pieces together. I need to redesign this in a way that makes it much easier to assemble. It also wasn't quite as stable as the solid pieces. There are also areas that let you see the hollow inside of the piece where the claws meet the base of the emitter lens. I'm thinking that the whole top section should be solid and that just having the claws as separate pieces that attach around the sides would be the best option. And once the top portion is assembled, it doesn't fit very snug into the bottom. I like how the 9th emitter head fits into the base, so I need to have the 11th sonic fit in the same way.

I'll be implementing these fixes as well as painting/assembling them within the next week or so to see what we got.

Don't see any pics. :(

Will you be opening these up on shapeways or will we have to order from you? :)

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

Doc, you may have to u/l your pics to a site and then link them here. Maybe one of the mods can tell you why your attachments aren't showing up. Photobucket or imageshack may be an option.

Those would work great for the 9th/10th emitter lens, and there's quite the varied selection. What do you find would be the advantages of cabochons over marbles? Do they come in various depths or are they just half-spheres?

The advantages would be the lens would have some open space behind it for an led, and I think that a marble would be too round, stand up a little too high for the 10 sonic.

Could always use a flat back Swarski crystal. Scrape off the backing so that light shows through.

Now those do look nice! Great job.:thumbsup

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

Wow! Those came out nice! I see a lot of possibilities in this... I wouldn't mind finishing one or two of these myself!

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

Oh, wow, do those ever look beautiful!! I can't wait till they become available!

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

Looking great! Btw, when your ready you should post an interest thread in the Junkyard and go from there. Can't wait, definitely in for a few versions.

Wonder if Capt. Jack's gun would 3d print well...

The do look great! Especially for the price. :thumbsup

Great static props.

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

Glad everyone is liking them so far! I'm hoping to have some painted pieces soon to show off!

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

I've been lurking around this thread for a bit now and just had to say what a gorgeous job you did on those pieces.

Can't wait to see any paint tests or changes you might make.

As someone born and raised in Philly, you're doing the city proud right now with these models. :lol

Thanks! The art scene in Philly isn't half bad. The problem is that Los Angeles keeps abducting most of our good artists. They tempt them with beautiful blondes, gorgeous weather, and sandy beaches! I have at least a dozen friends that moved out there in the last few years for work. My brother almost moved there but decided he didn't want to work for Google. Yeah...he turned down Google...

On a side note, I just applied a base coat of silver paint on the 9th Doctor's sonic and the details really pop! I'm going to do a coat of varnish over top to see how smooth a surface I can get for future coats.

Once I've worked the kinks out of each model I'll be taking a survey to see who wants what. After doing some experimenting with various combinations of combining multiple copies of the sonics within one upload file, I've managed to knock some off the prices for each, so if I purchase a bunch at once with this method, I can offer them to you guys for less than Shapeways with their flat rate shipping.

Ah. So it'll be run based.

Gotcha.

I'm in Canada so I'm not sure the shipping would be cheaper for me which is why I asked. Especially if I order a bunch of stuff. :)

Maybe the shipping won't be cheaper, but the sonics will, probably enough to offset the price. I'd also like the opportunity to inspect everything before going out to ensure quality, as well as add any extra bits needed (like the acrylic rod on River's sonic or a blue lens if I end up going that route for the 9th and 10th sonics).
