Interest Doctor Who 12th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver, Confession Dial & Sonic Stand

Looking forward to this...as being a huge Star Trek (24th century) fan, I've gotten into 3D printed props. Resin is still nice on certain things but being able to design & print in hollow plastic is fascinating. Learning more & more each day.

Can't wait to see these in production...

Well I just got the shipment notification, estimated to arrive on Saturday! I was hoping to have them by Friday so I had the whole weekend to work on something to show off but it may have to wait until Monday if I don't get a good chunk of time to bang them out.

The prototype(s) arrived!!!

Unfortunately, one part is missing from the port stand so I need to reprint it but that shouldn't affect the availability of anything else. I'll probably be snowed in this weekend so I'm going to do my best to get the sonic painted and assembled and document the process. Stay tuned...

Also, unrelated to Doctor Who and this project, but I printed a set of Mario Land pixel characters I designed as well and they turned out great! You can also see 'Justin Bailey' Samus in the background from a previous order. Each pixel on these guys is 2mm^3.

Looking forward to the results!

When will the updated model and port stand be uploaded?(To Shapeways)

Once I've confirmed the fit of the 3d printed pieces, as well as the electronics kit. 13doctorwho mailed them earlier in the week so I should have them in hand shortly. I'm hoping to get this all done over the weekend. Since the port stand model was missing a part, I can't 100% confirm the accuracy of the parts but I designed them with the same tolerances as all other parts so they should be fine, I just won't have a finished and painted version to show off with the others.

As of now, the Confession Dial fits perfectly, although the 'lid' on the complete version is a bit tight so that'll need to be sanded down a little to ensure it doesn't get stuck inside.

I'm test fitting the parts now, I'll post some pictures of them in a bit.

Alright, I had a chance to test fit everything and it's virtually perfect! Certain joints require a bit of prep before they match perfectly but I'll outline all of that in the guide I'll put together during my process. Here are the various components all in pieces and assembled.

First, the sonic, in pieces and assembled. The acrylic rods are also in place to complete the look. The switch slides very nicely and the twist lock joint is perfect. The only thing is the switch detail on the surface didn't print well. I need to fix this anyway on the new model as the ridges were too small on mine vs the prop. The knurling on the back section however is perfect!

Keep in mind, the housing seen on the top left of the picture with all of the pieces will not be included in the model as these will be sent to 13doctorwho for installing the electronics package.

Next, the confession dial. I tried to take pictures to highlight the surface details but the images don't do them justice. Once painter, they'll really pop! Third picture shows the lid off and the orb in place. I printed the orb in Frosted Ultra Detail for a better finish and it was definitely well worth it! Last picture shows the detail.

Here's the port stand - sans bottom piece since Shapeways goofed up and left it out of the order. I should have a reprint sent along to me shortly. The last picture shows the battery plates and button cells in place, as well as the push switch and an LED in one of the six clips. These components all fit perfectly - the only thing that needs adjusting is the bit that the sonic pushes into the switch and the clips for the LED's could stand to be a bit tighter fit.

And lastly, a picture of all three together!

I'm going to take the weekend to paint and assemble everything - hopefully the snow doesn't delay the electronics package from arriving soon so I can test fit all of those parts as well. Only a matter of days now before everything is ready to go!!!

Painting is going well but slow, just got the base varnish on all the parts and the base coats on the blue parts of the sonic. Tracking says the electronics should arrive tomorrow so I should have a chance to test fit them tomorrow night but based on the way things have been fitting so nicely thus far, I'm pretty sure it'll be good to go.

I'll link to an FS thread with all the links to each combination of things since I'll be offering some options for each kit. 13doctorwho will also start taking orders for the elecs once I give the go ahead on this kit so you'll be able to grab both at once!

Tracking has the electronics still in the departure state so who knows if the tracking is just delayed or it's really still there - hang in there people, any day now...

In the mean time, the painting is coming along nicely. I'm giving each coat a good amount of time to dry and learning a bit better about certain clearances that I may change between parts to account for those extra layers of paint so it's all for the best that I have a little time to kill. The blue I used is too dark but I kind of like it...it's closer to the actual TARDIS blue than the official sonic prop. But I can't figure out for the life of me why Testor's doesn't make an accurate Brass paint! It's more copper than it is brass, imo. Oh well - I got some Brass spray paint that should do the trick.

Alright, the electronics have arrived but there are some kinks to be worked out before it's good to go. It shouldn't change much since 13doctorwho will be ordering parts and boards over the next few weeks so it shouldn't add any time to that. The 3d printed kits themselves should be good to go in a few days, I just need to make some minor tweaks and upload the new versions. Stay tuned...

I test fitted the electronics and put together a video of the full sonic assembled with them inside and running. The paint job isn't finished (still need to hit the metal parts again and add the brass coloring and do fine details) and I definitely did too many layers on the blue parts - still didn't get the color right but I'm okay with that. I'll take the next day or so to finish up the model and upload them then I'll open the sales thread with links to everything!

Okay, just going over all of the parts and uploading the final versions now. Should have the sales thread up with all the links you need to get exactly what you want sometime tonight or tomorrow! I'm also redesigning the electronic housing unit(s) I'll be sending along to 13doctorwho for the electronic kits so by the time he has taken orders and ordered all the parts, that will be finished as well!

Ok, I realize this is sort of over, but I have a question - would it be possible to purchase the file itself? I can't afford $70 for Shapeways right now ( cause I'm a poor college student), but my college's library does 3d printing for $0.20/gram, which would probably be actually affordable for me - the only hitch would be that I would need a file.

Unfortunately, the nature of the design would be prohibitive to certain kinds of printing methods, including extrusion, which I assume is the method the printer at your library uses. It was specifically designed to be printed on an SLS printer which allows for much more complex and layered designs and is only offered through commercial printing companies at the moment.
