Doc's foam/fiberglass work + Mark 42 painted pieces

Re: foam with rondo+ HARDCORE BATTLE DAMAGE!!! who wants tutorial?

I had pretty good success using a soldering iron on a prepainted test piece. Bigger holes can be cut out raggedly with a knife before melting the edges. A bit more silver paint and I think it looks reasonable. I am still trying to convince myself to start melting my (soon to be) perfectly painted suit lol

Re: foam with rondo+ HARDCORE BATTLE DAMAGE!!! who wants tutorial?

Thanks very much for including the tutorials for sealing and painting foam, that will make finishing my suit so much easier. You're a legend :cool

Re: foam with rondo+ HARDCORE BATTLE DAMAGE!!! who wants tutorial?

hopefully I can save some folks some time here:

-not that I didn't believe doc, but as I found this thread a bit late, I had already PVA'd my IM legs... I wanted to at least experiment with the flexible method on some PVA'd scrap 6mm foam. It looks great! But it cracks and wrinkles to all hell, AS EXPECTED. This is the flexible method on 3 layers of PVA...

Soooo I guess I'll be doing something else with the legs... doc's method should work for other areas though. thanks doc!(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Re: foam with rondo+ HARDCORE BATTLE DAMAGE!!!

hey doc, your suit looks amazing! I am going out this weekend to get the stuff to try rondoing my suit.
I know i read it in this thread, but scanning back thru, I cant find it. what colors did you use? Your colors are perfect. I really like that gold color
red= Duplicolor Dark Metallic Cherry
gold= ???

haha thanks.

*edit* never mind, I couldnt find it because I read it on the last page!:facepalm

"Dark Cherry metallic 'duplicolor'
Sunburst Gold metallic 'duplicolor'"

Is this the colors doc is using, or what you are guessing?

Re: foam with rondo+ HARDCORE BATTLE DAMAGE!!! who wants tutorial?

Doc, how does the flexibilty work when parts are flexed inwards. A lot of methods hold up when you flex them outward. The inward flex is the issue. Please let me know.

Thanks man

Well I have some scraps here with all of the layers down (modpodge, plasti, adhesion, primer, paint, triple thick clear glaze)... Dying to test exactly what you're asking about. How long should I wait to test the inward flex on the foam scraps? (I'm clearly rusty when it comes to canned paint)

Re: foam with rondo+ HARDCORE BATTLE DAMAGE!!! who wants tutorial?

I'd say a day or 2 as it will flex well, as the paint is still curing. The real test would be afterwards.

aside from that, it's still one of the best finishes.

Ok cool thanks.

It's tough not to get antsy in the pantsy waiting on this baloney to dry. Yes, the finish is great! I'm testing it next to some PVA+smooth-on 321 coated foam to compare the finishes. Hopefully doc will have time to answer before they dry :)

I will say I am dang fond of this Duplicolor Barcelona red metallic. Sexy as hell man.

And so far the 321 seems to do enough self levelling to look good, not sure yet about cracking/flexibility/etc.

Re: foam with rondo+ HARDCORE BATTLE DAMAGE!!! who wants tutorial?

bending inwards? idk i never tested that way cuz my suit doesnt have parts that bend inwards so couldnt tell ya. Just testd like the photos i posted. My suit is mostly rondo coated except for abs/waist n so fars been holdin up fine. I dont plan on contortioning in my suit or pop n lockin like my man stealth so didnt test it that far. I know it has enough flex for what I need it for ....struttin lol :)

lol man, doc, I actually lol'ed at the end of this post.

If the paint on the abs have been holding up fine then this looks like the most solid way to do it. :thumbsup

we'll just make sure with Kurtis' test.
This will help for sure with finally getting something you don't have to worry about so much.

Pffffff that was comical. It is funny that Stealth would be the first to ask about inward flex, with his documented history of Costumed breakdance. In my case, I know I've tried to lean to pick something up off of a table and kinda thought... "Oh yeah, I guess I'm probably crushing or bending the abs inwardly (pretty sure that's a word) and I sure would like to have the best possible outcome for this foam" kind of thoughts

So we'll get an idear of it. It looks good as a muh just sitting here that's for sure

I was just thinkin how the heck r u building yr ab section then I remembered your building the mark 3 I believe n the abs r one solid piece. Now the question makes more sense cuz my abs have the plates that go over one another as I lean forward. Now I gotcha lol

Haa yep!

dude are you serious that sounds fresh... I kinda wish I had known that about the abs. Pretty big fan of the Mk iii though. :thumbsup :cheers

Re: foam with rondo+ HARDCORE BATTLE DAMAGE!!!

ok dudes, my test results... this is after 48 hours of curing. It is a 6mm foam sheet sample:

Clearly I'm doing something wrong. let's get some brainstorming going! Let me say I feel like it can be done, and I'm NOT trying to debunk this method, actually quite the opposite I only want to DUPLICATE it!

what I'm thinking:

1.) I used a different brand of primer filler (rustoleum).. surely not the problem I hope...
2.) I didn't heat set the foam well enough? I did two passes with a hot hot hair dryer, letting it cool between. I did see the sparkles when I finished, but then again I saw some in the foam before I even hit it with the hair dryer
3.) It was too humid in my garage when I did it? I don't remember what the temperature was, but it was within the ranges listed on the cans
4.) I would say I'm not letting the layers dry long enough or something, but I know a guy who is successfully pulling this off letting it dry for way less time between coats
5.) here's what I did: heated 2x, Mod 3x, Plasti 3x, Adhesion promoter 2x, Filler primer 2x within 10 mins of second coat (per can instructions), 2 coats of Duplicolor Barcelona Red Metallic, and finally Krylon triple glaze 2x.

Comments? Suggestions? what factors do you think would cause problems with the cracking? I'm dying to get it right! Thanks in advance guys(y)thumbsup

EDIT: by the way, 2 thin coats of 321 on top of PVA flexes a decent little amount without cracking, but does crease when flexing inward. I posted pics in my Mk iii WIP so as to not take over this thread completely haa

ya mustve missed what I wrote before steps. Follow exactly n I dont have rustoleum in there. I never ever use rustoleum anything. Im talking from experience. I usually paint with gun with a 2k highbuild primer and the only primer from a rattle can that gave me a durable finish was that primer I posted. So if I have to use rattle cans I try to stick with duplicolor. I even use valspar for my gold just cuz couldnt find it color anywhere else cuz that brand is garbage too. Im havin no problem wit mine so dnt know what to tell ya. And you guys dnt have to do my way ya can think of somthin that fits u.No ones puttin gun to your head to do it my way. Ya'll asked me how I did so I showed ya'll , so If I do tut for battle damage am I gnna get blamed for your guys suit gettin ruined if ya'll didnt do it right? hmmmm lol

I don't think that anybody will get mad... So much methods are trial and error if you use different brands instead of the brands shown in the tutorials. People should be thankful and be smart enough to test a new method on an unimportant test piece. So don't worry if anybody ruin his suit. It's special, it's awesome, but it's always risky and that would not be your fault ;)
Keep it up :)

Thanks Neuer, and yr very wise, ok Ill keep that in mind :)

Re: foam with rondo+ HARDCORE BATTLE DAMAGE!!!

Since I havent got time to do a battle damage tutorial right now I'll link some vids I watched That gave me an Idea how to do it. Its for models and miniature stuff which I think have the best detail. So I used their techniques just applied it on a larger scale and I used some different tools. Im gnna still make one for you guys when i get some days off but these vids should help get started...enjoy :) YouTube - HD: Warhammer 40k part 3: modelling battle damage on armourhttp://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PxkV70Jvakw. .
