Hey, I accidentally posted this in the costuming forum a while back and it didn't get moved, so here it is along with a question.

My question is, where can I get some real wood grips for this thing for cheap, preferably without a big red 9 carved into them?

As I've already attached all the blaster pieces and it was a horrible pain in the ass to do so (also I glue a couple parts together) I don't think I'll be able to take it apart to paint it. Is it possible to mask off the whole gun aside from the handle when repainting, or will there be an obvious seam?

It couldn't hurt to try, and I think you could hide any paint seams through a little extra weathering. I'd try removing anything that wasn't glued on and go from there.

One of my favorite paints for blasters is Krylon BBQ Black or Rust-Oleum High Heat Black. When buffed after drying it gets a nice sheen that looks pretty realistic.

Well, the gun is actually glued together. I had to cut the bottom of the long ammo clip off and glue it into the gun because I couldn't get a short one in because of the screws from the blast-tech kit. On top of that, if I broke the glue to take the gun apart it would be very difficult to get the scope mount back on, as that had to be attached once the gun was together because the mount covered a gun body screw. Just abut all I could take off is the scope itself.

Oh, I wasn't meaning you should disassemble the whole gun, I thought you were talking about the add-on greeblies being glued on.

If its the same as the airsoft one's i had the plastic grips should just pop off as they are a push fit but as said you will have trouble matching up wooden ones as they have a step in them at the back i think that is different to the airsoft version. The airsoft is not an M96 either its based on the other version of the mauser which number evades me at the moment :confused!!

The only thing I'm unsure of is if the metal parts of the airsoft handle are hollow. I can't remember anymore, but if they are hollow if I try to file them down to the size of the wood grips they'll just open up into a big silver hole.

Yeah pretty sure the they are hollow inside actually, someone on the BBC stripped one down for electronics once. Alternatively you could have a go at making your own wooden grips from some hardwood, shouldn't be too hard to file the lines into it with a little patience!! Then screw in place with a brass screw and washer:thumbsup

There are also resin side plates available to make these look more like the M96 version(same as a denix basically)

As often as possible I prefer to stick with metal, I'm not a fan of resin. As far as making my own wood grips goes, I can't do a damn thing with wood.

I was looking at some pictures of Denix Mausers and read a site about making them more accurate and figure it would be a worthwhile investment/upgrade. Where is the cheapest place to buy a Denix? And are they the same measurements as an airsoft? I'm currently making my Han gun belt and wouldn't want to wet mold the holster to a gun that's considerably larger or smaller than what I'll eventually be carrying in it.

Denix Mausers used to be available to be had for $49.99 to $69.99. Nowadays, its between $69.99 and $99.99 when you can find them. Still a good price for what it is, they're just not as readily available. I don't see them much at all on Ebay anymore, but I find them now and again at gunbroker.com.

What about the ones on Blast-tech? They look like they have black plastic grips, but since I'm going to get wood grips anyways, it doesn't matter, right? Also, There are a couple here:

http://www.gunsandswords.com/broom-handled-mauser.html

And here:

http://www.gunsandswords.com/1896-mauser-automatic-pistol.html

I don't know why there is a price difference between the two, and the side panels don't appear to be accurate right above the grips, can anybody fill me in on what's wrong with those or if they're worth getting?

I'm perfectly happy with the conversion kit I got from Blast-tech, I just need the Denix, and based an what he charges for his Han costume pieces I wouldn't imagine he sells it for cheaper than anyone or everyone else.

The Denix Mauser has brown plastic grips. They're a bit more accurate than the ones you have as they have the 32 line markings. No idea how they compare to the airsoft grip frame, but I do have a bag full of spare Denix grips and an airsoft mauser.

You can replace the Denix grips with wood grips. You have to cut out the center section of the grip frame and remove a considerable amount of the enlarged Denix outer grip frame to fit the wood grips. Because of the curvarture, I usually have to do much of it by hand with rasps and files. I've seen a lot of people skip that step, but its really noticeable if you don't do it. You also have to enlarge the stepped area on the wood grips. When I fit them, I usually do it with a bit of plumber's epoxy between them so they don't drift any. Wakal has directions posted on his site.

I believe I saw those directions somewhere, although the ones I saw said to remove the inner step completely. I would think that would make the grips drift around, but I haven't seen the gun myself. I'll probably get the Denix from blast-tech as I know I can trust that site and shipping is included in their price. As for the wood grips, I'm thinking ebay right now, but if anybody knows anyplace cheaper than $37 I'd appreciate the info.

I searched for that page on his site and couldn't find it. The basic directions said to cut out the center section of the grip frame where the grip screw is. Then fit the wood grips with the screw to the Denix grip frame and trace around them with an Xacto blade. Remove the grips and then file off everything outside your trace on the grip frame.

I believe it was something after that, he made a big deal about using a file with one smooth side so it didn't pit the inside of the grip.
