District 9 Question: White body Armor?

What is the hard white body armor some of the MNU Mercs have on?

I assumed it was made for the movie. I have worn and handled a lot of different body armor and have never seen anything like those vest

They do talk about it a little bit in the "Conception and Design: Creating the World of District 9" feature on the 2nd disc of the 2 disc DVD set.

The MNU armour was a lot of fun. This full armour set was intended to be the heaviest version available - some guys would have less, some none.
The idea was to have this armour reflect some of the alien tech, a hint that perhaps MNU had learnt something, however little from the Alien technology over the 25 years or so since arrival.

In the commentary they mention it as well... can't remember what was said, but I got the impression it was made for the film and not a found item.

How accurate is the body armor in the film to Broadmore's concept?

Gotta say I loved the MNU armor in the movie and thought they did an excellent job with it looking almost-but-not-quite-futuristic. I am a bit surprised that it hasn't been taken on as a project and sculpted yet. Hopefully in the future
