Dishonored's City Watch wheel-lock pistol.

Hey everyone, although this is my first post, i have been around for a while watching what people have been making and crafting and generally being inspired by these creations. I've been making some bits myself but have never put them up on any websites or forums. Anyway, here's something I made a last summer as the centerpiece of my Dishonored City Watch Costume.

It was a few months before London MCM Expo in October 2013 that I set my mind to being a City Watch officer from Dishonored. I knew that I wanted a replica Wheel-Lock and didn't want to compromise with a cheap pirate pistol as I have seen others do before. I collected a series of visuals from in game images to get a gauge of the dimensions and sizing of the weapon. The end result had some variations of my own which I intend to correct in future projects, with better time and materials.

During the first phase of the build I assembled the photographs I had collected to understand the details and the shape of the weapon. One of the first things I noted from looking at all the Images is that the First Person model and the Over world model are flipped.

On the First Person model the wheel lock mechanism is on the right hand side of the pistol.

Whereas on the Over world model, the wheel lock is on the opposite side. (It is possible to see the mechanism on the left side of Lord Shaw's pistol.

I figured that I wanted to create the Over world model as my replica because I feel that that is the correct image of the Pistol, the one that the player holds may just be flipped so there is better model detail on view.

The first job after my research was complete was to work out the size of the piece.

Looking at images of the Over world pistol and ones holstered on the belts of City Watch officers I was able to get an Idea of the scale. From the scaling I drew a template. I took an Image of the wheel lock and took it into Paint.NET where I made it into a flat black and white image. I removed the trigger and trigger guard because this would be just the wooden part.

I then made the image lighter and created a new layer on which I drew my template for the wooden parts.

The top of the template is cut lower to accommodate the barrel. I printed the piece to the right size with the rear of the pistol and under barrel on separate templates.
The Pieces were then cut out by hand (Because I lack the grace and beauty of a Band-saw)

There are two grips because the rear of the weapon is much wider than the part that sits under the barrel.

The Assembly process begins.

The pieces were glued and initial sand began. I put a trigger in from an old Toy gun by cutting a cavity in the grip and screwing it in place then removing the screw-head with my Dremel.

The trigger-guard and metal tape that runs along the underside of the pistol was made from layered paper and mounting card with PVA giving it a very strong finish.

Beginning to take shape. I then began to build up the metal plating beneath the mechanisms of the pistol.

I then added a pommel, but in my struggle to find something accurate and effective, i just made something that looked "Good enough" (Which is never good enough)

Last few details added before taping off for paint.

After a good few coats of Silver and some light dusting of black to make it look like worn out gunmetal

And a final coat of dark brown with some grey brush strokes to simulate wood grain (This did not come out well in the photograph)

And here is the finished piece, I'm jolly happy with it, although there are some differences to in the In Game model I still think it captures the spirit of the Dishonored Pistol.

At a later stage I may do a thread about the rest of the Costume it was certainly one of the most complex Jackets I have ever made and the Clip/Holster device on the Crossbelt locking mechanism was an Interesting challenge.

Thoughts and Comments are appreciated. See you in the Future.
