As we all know guns aren’t just black or painted “gun metal”. The finish is more of a burnished look. I’m working on my Liea pistol and painting is the next stage. Please share your techniques for making a gun look gunmetal and of course share pics. Thank you.

Here’s a sample of what I mean

My go to is a black base then using graphite powder, I buff it on. The more you buff it the shiner it gets. I wanted more of the blued finish.

The technique I use, and I wish I could recall who explained it to me, is using BBQ paint. Once cured, I generally use a 0000 steel wool to polish it to a gunmetal sheen (can use paper towels and similar fabrics in the creases). Then for the appearance of wear, I'd use silver rub n buff.

Yes! I used to use BBQ Black on all of my gun-type props. I'd put a layer of gunmetal down first, then when I'd buff the BBQ black I'd try to be a little aggressive on areas I'd want visible wear and expose a bit of the gunmetal paint underneath.

I think I’ll do a couple of tests on some extra acrylic I’ve got. This is all great stuff so far. Thank you. Let’s keep the tips and techniques comin.
