Die Cast Lighted 1/350th TOS Enterprise (TOMY crowd funded)

Same here. I had just set the secondary hull on the stand and noticed an exposed screw hole.
Do you recall the screw head type or any details about the plug itself? Did it snap back in or is it just held in by friction or was it originally glued in place? Do you think a high pressure (technically low pressure lol) vacuum hose would work to remove the fully seated plug?

Why would you want to remove them?

I wish I had looked at the screw now.. It was forward and right under the saucer so it was dark.. I just popped it in being happy I found it.
It had a definite snap to it.. it was a rigid plastic-not rubber

Somewhere in this thread someone posted a Prestige Harvester combine they did that was arguably bigger.

The PR on this project was horrible. Its not just it was US only. They Crowdfunded on their own site, so no one came to know about it simply because they were on a major crowdfunding platform. (MST3K S14 is running now on their own site, and while its ticking along, it would probably be funded by onow on a big platform- getting the word out is key. ) I know of only one interview they did with a "you tube influencer", they didn't reveal or pitch this at comic con - or even a Trek specific convention that I know of. I believe they did just the one show in Chicago. And they advertised on Facebook of all places ( that worked to find me.. but if I hadn't seen the TOMY and known who they were I would have skipped over it as a scam) I don't think it was lack of interest, it was lack of reach to the people would would have been interested. Which is why you see the ones selling on ebay for between 1200-1400 on average. If the market had been saturated, people would be sitting there with thier own , and 1-2 others unable to sell them. If TOMY had set up interviews with all of the bigger adult Toy collector channels, or entertainment channels like Nerdrotic, revealed the thing at Comic-con SD, paid for commercials to run during streamed episodes of TOS, directly contacted Mods at the more prominent Star Trek Forums and groups, and so forth... they would have reached that 5000 goal and more.
Well said. Their crowdfunding campaign needed better publicity.

To install Wi-Fi relays to automate lighting and run external power - similar to what I did with BTTF Delorean.

Well since they are a hard plastic any type of removal like using a tiny screwdriver will mark them of ourselves. Maybe little suction cups Lol....do they make them that small??

Yeah, I don’t know. Most likely I will leave this one alone because of that. But it’s the only vehicle or figure in my collection that requires manual control for lights and sounds so if I could get at the screws without damaging anything I would open it up. You can actually activate capacitance touch switches externally by rolling up some tin foil and shaping it flat like a fingertip and attaching a ground wire or just a long enough wire connected to nothing (no power needed). But that will look pretty ridiculous on the strut and saucer so not really an option. I’m hoping someone who puts this in a display case will be motivated to do this and I’ll learn from them.

I confess I missed an opportunity to see what type of screw head was used. I just was cognizant of the airbrushing on the plug and oriented the plug to look best. It is a snug pressure fit.

No problem. Thanks for the info. moonbus said it was Phillips head. I’m not going to risk damaging the paint so unless all of my covers spontaneously fall out I guess I won’t be opening it up anytime soon.

On one of my ships the plug fell out and I cant find it, the screw is a Philips.
Oh Noes. I am sorry. I had mine setup and in the stand before I noticed. I was so happy when I was able to find it in the packing.
Have you tried calling TOMY to see if you can get a replacement? The real bummer is these were inplace before it was painted I think.. whatever they send may not be an exact match :(

I‘m not so sure that it was just due to bad PR that this did so badly.

I primarily purchase 1/4 statues all the way to life size busts. Many of their edition sizes go from a few hundred all the way to many thousands, from lows of $500 all the way to $4000.

And yet the piece I received today and unboxed, being the 1/3 scale Captain Kirk literally has the lowest edition size of any collectable I’ve ever purchased. That being only 150 units, for a Captain Kirk of all characters?!

Yeah I'm not entirely convinced it was because of bad PR either. That probably did play a role to an extent, but it was featured on some pretty big Star Trek (including startrek.com) and collectibles websites, and it may be my skewed memory but I thought the bad communication started after that initial sales window, and that it was pretty typical at the start otherwise.

The cost of living in the last couple of years has become ridiculous, and people's spending power is trending down across the board, so that won't have helped.

I also suspect the lacklustre sales numbers was partly because of the choice of ship. I've long thought there was a slight mismatch between perception and reality when it comes to the TOS Enterprise. Every few years you see big toy manufacturers rereleasing various scale toys etc of that ship (I'm excluding model kits here), but almost never the Refit. But I would argue that given a choice between the TOS and the Refit, the overwhelming majority of the sorts of people willing to drop this kind of money on a replica ship would pick the Refit every time. The TOS ship is more iconic in a general sense, but I think the Refit (and perhaps also the D) is more beloved by fans. I'd bet they would've sold more of the former and maybe also the latter. Anecdotally, I know of at least two people who would've gone for a $600-1000 Enterprise D in a heartbeat who did not even consider getting this ship

I like the refit but I still think the original is best and am glad that is what they went for.

The Refit and D were really well done my diamond select. I don't need other version of them. Don't have the room for all three ships in a large scale. If people want a nice version of the D they can get the Fanhome which is all diecast and looks like fun to put together ...

Maybe they will make a refit one day.

Oh I love the original ship too, I'm not trying to disparage it at all. I could easily be wrong, maybe the original is more loved by people who are willing to spend this kind of money on it than the Refit.

I'm very torn about the Fanhome set, and I decided not to get it even though I personally prefer the D to the TOS. Its partworks nature means that pieces that should be a single part are split across multiple pieces, which really spoils the look of it. I'm willing to spend that kind of money, but it has to look better than that for me.

I think it would be cool, (if it could be done without damaging the model), to take the saucer apart in order to put some little 1:350 scale Enterprise crew figures on the bridge. It would give it some life.
