Die Cast Lighted 1/350th TOS Enterprise (TOMY crowd funded)

Thanks for the pictures! It looks like I’ll be displaying mine on the starboard side because of that stand for the saucer. That seam on the saucer is disappointing. That is probably the easiest to fI’d prior to paint. The nacelles look nice and straight and level.

Did you try to display it without the saucer support?

Nope. And I doubt I’ll try it either, as I don’t want to risk warping something due to excessive weight/force on the secondary hull’s base connection points.

Yeah, I hate the saucer support, too! Customer Service told me it was only needed "for long term display" which means I don't know what.

Master Replicas made a premium replica model. Two decades ago.

This looks like a scaled-up Diamond Select toy.

Now that’s a bit harsh.

I have a couple of those pieces from Diamond Select, and even with the seams, the Tomy one is substantially better, pretty much across all categories.

Probably means that it might hold for a day or so, but any longer could cause for the attachment points on the base to snap etc.

How's the base? Does it have 'weight' to it?

Not at all.

Now that sort of reminds me of a Diamond Select accessory. It’s pretty much all just plastic!

The transparent pieces are a bit thicker, but the chevron bases are extremely thin and light.

I use this for a Christmas display and will give it a try here. They also have them for AAA batteries too. You can find it on Amazon.

If you can get past the seams and plugs, the piece does look great. My first thought was that I would display it from its Port side, so I wouldn’t need to see the plug holes on the secondary hull. However that leads to the stand for the saucer section obscuring part of the secondary hull, as the stand is placed at an odd angle. Because of that it may actually be better to display it from the Starboard side.
Another batch of photos.

They designed the base around the idea of displaying the side full of plugs and not the clean side?!
good god why did they not just place the plugs on the typically unfinished side of the model like anyone would have suggested?
no wonder they're not responding to emails anymore

I would think it would‘ve been easy for Tomy to flip the base design so that the current obstruction is moved to the other side with all the visible plug holes. Oh well.

It's not exactly what was promised but it's also not terrible. I'm a little bothered by the airbrushed weathering on the front of the saucer. It's far too evenly spaced and they are too uniform to look right. But again, a somewhat minor nit. I'm going to keep this as my "close as possible to the filming model" Enterprise. I have PL 1/350 that I'm going to build as an "alternate" version, with subtle aztecing, registry and pylon spotlights, and probably a few other changes from canon.

Thanks for taking the time to post so many photos and answering questions about it! That's really helpful.

Don't let people frustration talk you out of enjoying it.

Right. We just have to think of it as a nice representation of the ship and NOT the ultimate (as they had said it would be) model based on the filming model. I don't know why Gary Kerr didn't suggest more to Chris. Chris was the designer and while some of the features are really nice he did drop the ball on the seams. I would think the pylons could have been made as one cylindrical piece. That would have minimized some of the seams and then the saucer probably should have been the two pieces with the seam on the bottom half of the saucer. Where the pieces flush and attached to the bottom of the upper half. That way the seam would have been completely on the underside. But they have it with the seam all the way around the side of the saucer just above the windows. Not a good idea.

Things I think they got right. The color, the shuttle bay details, the bridge details were a nice little addition. The base is not as bad as I thought. The ship sits well. I don't mind the brace for the saucer. The thing is 25 lbs total weight So im guessing the saucer is at least 8 pounds. That's a lot of weight. So I have zero issue with that.

The weathering looks better then the polar lights pre-build which was a big turn off for people on that one when they received it. The polar Lights pre-build has now gained value.

So any worries about the future value of this one should be dismissed. It has a couple things other versions did not offer and of course it's Metal which no other 1/350 offered. So there will be people who will want this later.

Yeah. But you know no one except extreme Star Trek nerds like us are even gonna question it. It's metal....so it's gonna have screw points......thanks for all the pics Phoenix. You did something that Chris and Dan should have done a week ago. They chickened out and did not provide the update. So it's nice to know that we know what we will be getting in October. No surprises.....

In addition to the terrible airbrushed weathering, it was completely inappropriate to do dark pre-shading along the grid lines.* That was not a thing that was done at the time, and the final result here looks like a checkerboard.

Mine will not be leaving the box.

*in fact, I haven't seen evidence of that on any latter-day Trek studio model, either. Why hobbyists do it to their builds mystifies me.

I thought that was a play of the light. I don't know what the grid line looks like on the modem in the Smithsonian. I think they were done in pencil and the top of the saucer is the only original paint left on the studio model. I will say they did lighten the grid lines up like they promised.

They have also fallen behind on updates for the DeLorean project, and have not responded to any comments on their Kickstarter page in a month. They haven't even deleted my "based on the Enterprise, don't expect any promises to be met" post. I'm beginning to wonder (and I'm completely making this up) if the guys left the company and no one else has been assigned to PR these projects.

On Youtube, Adam Savage has a couple of great videos with the filming model while it is being worked on. At 1:56 you can see a good shot of the panel lines.

He has a nice VR video, too if you happen to have an Oculus.
