Die Cast Lighted 1/350th TOS Enterprise (TOMY crowd funded)

For those that don’t go on FB. The moderator posted this in response to lighting questions:

I have been told there are quite a lot of lighting effects, more than we were able to easily list in our current ads, so I'm hoping we can have a dedicated post to all the lighting effects soon. We will probably wait to post that until we can share the campaign video, since that shows off several of the effects better than I could explain secondhand. -Laura

Oh my god, I am overjoyed that they're doing this, it has been my dream to own a large-scale refit since I was about 10 years old. Never had the skills to do that paint job justice, and in general it always seemed like an intimidating project to built a kit version.

While there are other inaccuracies and issues that can be hard to ignore ... [the Fanhome Enterprise D] does NOT look like a toy, which I have to say is what the TOMY TOS and now recently announced TMP ships look like to me.
Have to hard disagree with you there. The Fanhome Enterprise D absolutely looks like a toy in comparison to the Tomy ship, in fact the only reason I didn't buy it despite desperately wanting an Enterprise D at that size is because of how bad it looks. On the other hand, the Tomy TOS ship looks much, much nicer, provided you're not looking at it from the plug side. Yes, the TOS ship isn't perfect by any means, but it also cost much less than the D while looking much higher quality. The horrible separate sections of the saucer alone were enough to put me off, but it's got so many problems that it's hard to list them all.

Love your comments on the Refit, but to use your words against you  I have to hard disagree with you. The Fanhome D does not look like a Toy. It looks awesome. She will be on display (Assuming I can get it built) next to my TOMY TOS, and Refit. God willing also the future Tomy Excelsior, Enterprise E and F.

I'd love to see one in person, because I expect it looks better than in pictures (it looks okay from the side, for example) just as the Tomy TOS Enterprise does, but imo the Fanhome model just isn't good enough for what it costs.

The nacelles are in desperate need of diffusion and the light leak on the saucer is really bad. I saw this picture on Reddit earlier and it looked exactly how I always feared it would. If they'd just made the top and bottom of the saucer in single pieces, that would've gone a long way towards improving it. Obviously being able to build it yourself (and presumably also disassemble?) means you can fix both of these things.

If it was half the cost then I could overlook all its problems, but the price is crazy high for such a flawed product. There are so many reports online of people complaining about it being over engineered and unnecessarily split into tons of separate pieces just so they can pad out the build, to the detriment of the model. I was hoping they'd sell the entire thing as a whole product for a discount at the end of its run as some companies have occasionally done in the past, and I would've considered it depending on the price, but that isn't happening, sadly.

What is ironic to me is that the TOS shuttlebay fits the refits lines better with the nacelle supports moved forward.

The ST: V shuttlebay fits TOS Enterprise best—go figure

Man, they are super insistent about that cord not being included (cord not included).

I'm happy that they managed to get a partial hangar bay in there, even if it's not the whole hangar/cargo bay structure.
I suspect it’s a play on words… Remember how commercials would always say “batteries not included?” After collectors made a lot of noise about batteries in the TOS Enterprise, they shifted to an external power source, hence the new slogan, power cord not included. Also, people will have specific desires on… cord length!

It’s the best commercial model in this size at this price point warts and all. Factory Entertainment has a 15k model you may be interested in.

Helios Models and lighting has hands down the best Enterprise-D kit out there, it's probably around $2,000 when you add in the lighting kit and decals, and it's enormous at 1/650 scale. But I don't think you can get it any longer. It was a limited production run. They're now doing an Enterprise-B/Excelsior kit in a number of different scales, but I think you can only order through their Facebook page.

But somebody still has to build it so the price point if you can find the kit? 4K 5k finished. And from that video looks worth every penny !

I'm building my own, but yes, if you commission it out (Andrew from Canadian Starships is building two for other people!), that will definitely add to the cost. It's expensive, but I wouldn't say it's overpriced.

There aren't a lot of pieces to the kit. The upper and lower saucers are complete pieces, the neck and upper secondary hull are a single piece, the lower hull is separate, and there's both a cast armature for the neck and saucer and a metal plate for structural integrity. It's really well done. But I'm going to let some others build it first and watch their videos before tackling it!

Anyway, apologies for derailing the thread. I'm definitely excited about the TOMY Refit after bailing out of the TOS model.
