dexter watch

Egads.....all this gloom and doom from you guys. Have a little faith and patience. Pictured below here is a watch lot I obtained recently I'm still going thru which is typical of what I find in my travels.......I think theres over 200lbs of watches here. Like I said before....." I see more watches in a matter of weeks than most see in years" ....figure of speech of course but just to make a point.....so I'm sure I'll find some of these watches.....no promises but I'll try....always keeping my eyes open. :confused

Whoah. That's real neat. Where do you find these watch lots? I'm a watch enthusiast, myself.

Dp can you by any chance pm me the serial number of your watch? I ask this because my friend says he can find it with this. This will help me out greatly!

I gotta back DarkPassenger here. I was one of the members bidding on both of these watch auctions last week and I didn't win either of them. Could it have gone to someone who had no idea what the watch was?...Certainly it could have, but I seriously doubt it.
I had been trying to ID the watch for a long while now and when DarkPassenger offered to tell the other board members here over PM, I sent a PM. It was answered promptly and with a good detailed pic of the watch face and a comparison to a screen shot from the show. He has not withheld anything from anyone, except some new members, and has shared all of his other findings on related threads as well. And he only did that to give established members here who have been searching and following the threads a chance to get one without a bidding war.
If I was a new member trying to ID the watch, I would understand that I can't expect people here to offer up any and all information in a question thats also someone's first post here. I'm not saying thats what happened here and I'm not speaking of anyone in particular, so please no one take any offense. I'm just trying to say that I, for one, understand DarkPassenger's position on the matter and would've accepted it if he hadn't told me what it was and kept looking.
I'm not saying the information should be kept secret. It could have been shared through PM though or at least more discreetly here on the board, even between new and established members so that those who want to know can without the thread turning up in any internet search on the subject that non-members can readily see. I know everyone has different opinions on this and everyone has a right to their own opinion. I'm just sharing mine on this particular situation. Like TymerDC said in a previous post..."cats outta the bag and whatever...let it go man."
I don't think DarkPassenger should be ragged for taking the tact that he did. Everyone knows what the watch is now so lets leave it alone.

The idea that new members have to wait and earn anything disappeared when registration was permanently opened.

I, for another, am completely backing DarkPassenger as well because it is not how everyone is making it seem. I PMed DarkPassenger explaining my love for Dexter, and my personal extensive journey in finding this watch. He wasn't playing keep away with new guys just because they're new, he was trying to ensure that all of the people who knew about this watch knew about it for the right reasons. He had explained to me that he told *everyone* who had PMed him. Now that this went public, my best guess is that eBay sellers are going to latch onto this thing like Gollum onto the One Ring. That's exactly what DarkPassenger was trying to prevent.

In the meantime, this is definitely the watch I'll be hunting down. :lol
Guys... guys I found it...

People know the watch now so there is no use in talking about. Okay we are all on dp side let's talk about the watch itself, show off pics idk.

I love watch... :lol
And an astronaut worn this watch after breaking his Omega speedmaster during an apollo mission ... It was this waltham watch !

I was not sure because the astronaut's bracelet was made of velcro... But I recognized the design...

That doesn't sound right to me... I'm familiar with the story of how David Scott's Speedmaster's crystal popped off, and how he wore his backup Waltham, but the only pictures of the alleged Waltham I've seen have been of chronographs, and none of them have looked anything like this one.

Your welcome to try of course but your not going to find this watch thru the serial number. In fact watches aren't cataloged thru serial numbers in such a way they can be searched that way. You really need the "reference number" , "model number" or "model name" the factory gave the watch to identify it. Collectors use serial numbers to date a watch and in some cases serial numbers tell what make and model the factory assigned the watch to if that info survived. Many early swss makers didn't keep records available to the public and most record archives were lost or destroyed when companies went out of business. The exceptions survived mostly thru collectors and preservationists.

Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate the backing. KingDavid is a new member with a very low post count, and I had no problem telling him. I just withheld info to NEW PMs since the watch was on eBay 2 weeks ago (or whenever it was).

I'll post up pics of my watch in a second since this is now a Dexter Watch thread. I guess I should right?

That's so childish man... and sooooo useless...

If it was or not this watch, I might have a lot of luck, thankfully for the other members !

Here's the real story:

From Apollo XV, astronaut David Scott:
142:14:22 Scott: "Verify cabin at 3.5." Okay, cabin's at 3.5. Suit circuit's locked up at about 4.4. My PGA is coming through 5 and decaying. And let's slip on a watch. [Dave may have had his watch hanging from the instrument panel and, in any event, he is now putting it on and is probably starting the stopwatch function.][Scott, from a 1996 letter - "I do not recall ever having looked at my watch after egress. In the cabin after EVA-2, I noticed that the crystal of my Omega had popped off sometime during the EVA. Therefore, on EVA-3, I used my backup Waltham watch (which was) of a similar type. It worked just fine during the even higher temperatures of EVA-3.

January 2007 David Scott's Waltham update:
On Jan 22, 2007, 09:00 AM - Unauthorized Timepieces

Another irregularity that has come to light in the investigation of Apollo 15 was that Scott had on board two timepieces (a wristwatch and stop watch) that were not part of the normal mission equipment. During the preflight training period, Scott had agreed to evaluate these timepieces for the manufacturer at the request of a friend. Thinking they might be useful, particularly for the possible emergency timing of a manually controlled propulsion maneuver, Scott carried them on the mission but without prior authorization. NASA has deliberately withheld the name of the manufacturer of the timepieces to avoid commercialization of this unauthorized action.
The Waltham they are referring to is similar to this example:

I agree with you on that Risu. I just appreciate discretion when there's active auctions going on, as do many others. Everyone here is usually very helpful when they have knowledge to share. Like Darkpassenger said, KingDavid was told and he is a new member. The only time he wasn't sharing the info was due to the active auctions.

Here's some pics of my watch. Took a flick of the back too. No Serial Number.

Most of the time serial numbers are on the inside case back of the watch and some are case numbers not serial numbers. Depends on the maker. I would like seeing what movement and ASA number the watch uses if you ever have it opened.

I am way too afraid to open it up. I am so cautious with the watch it's pretty silly. If I ever open it up, I'll be sure to take pictures though.

Dark,

Dont be afraid...just take it to a local watchmaker and ask him to open it so you can take a few close CLEAR pics, ask him what the movement ASA number is then have him close it for you. He may or may not charge you a few bucks for his time....I wouldn't myself. If he asks why you want this just tell him your doing some research for me..nothing more. Just make sure hes a REAL watchmaker and not some dweeb just changing batteries in a jewelry store or mall. If you can't find one then ask the local jewelers if they know any.
