dexter watch

The fact that it showed up at all means it's not THAT rare. I've been watching ebay for two years for a particular tie from Doctor Who and haven't even seen one of them show up.

Something to consider:

I don't think anyone knows if this watch is truly rare or not, because I'd wager no one has ever looked for one before. But it seems pretty obscure, not a brand or model that has any widespread following. To top it all off I don't think it is a particularly attractive watch either. Other than having a cool retro vibe it's a pretty plain watch really.

But when it becomes known as the "Dexter Watch?" People will start seeking them out which, yes, will drive up prices, but it will also lead to more of them coming to market in the first place. Once the word gets out and people with boxes full of homely watches start putting what they've got up for sale we'll really see how just how rare they are.

It's also possible the only reason those most recent watches sold for what they did is because those "select few" in the "Extra Super Double Secret Dexter Watch Club" were all bidding against each other because they all thought they had the exclusive scoop.

Nothing was ever a secret. Read the Dexter Costume thread. All info was shared via PMs to avoid price inflation. Why is everyone having such a problem with that? Here I thought I was doing the community a favor keeping it private from scalpers.

Lots of watch collectors out there, I myself one, and do occasional watch repair. But to be honest, this one particular one is not typically on a collector's list. I wouldn't say it's necessarily rare, sometimes these tend to end up in lots on Ebay, mixed in with a bunch of other watches.

Here's one that is relatively easily obtainable, but costly, Seiko 6105, worn by Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now. I've owned about 5-6 of them.

I didn't mean any disrespect. Just trying to lighten up the mood on this thread. It seems like everyone involved is taking this way too personally.

I don't have this watch and was planning on buying one. If I am unable to track one down, it won't be the end of the world. I can always find a "close enough" substitute. Or just plain be patient and eventually run across one.

Like I said before, it's nice to know the make and model of the watch. And yes, it does suck that the cat is out of the bag. And yes, this may make it more difficult to track one down. And yes, this may cause the price to go up on them. However, in the words of our very own DarkPassenger, "Deal with it."

I know and this watch isn't rare. The reason its hard to find is most of these type of watches were considered "throw-aways" because at the time it was cheaper to buy a new one rather than have this watch repaired. The few that survived most likely found their way into someone's drawer and forgotten when they quit keeping time and needed servicing. More expensive collectible higher-end watches are more common because they were worth keeping or having repaired and retained their value. I'll most likely run into a watch like this sitting in a pile at a show or some old "bone-yard" of broken watches that was kept for parts.

A lot of it is also just the name brand. You see tons of Rolex watches on ebay because everybody knows they're worth something.

A misconception about Rolex watches is everyone thinks they are all worth alot......well thats not true. Everybody knows Rolexes are worth something because of the companies' smart marketing. Some model Rolexes can be had for a few 100 bucks while others cost 1000's. The word "rare" is used way too often to describe something someone thinks is very valuable because they see very little of the item available. Thats only because they aren't in the position where they see alot of the items.....for example the watch we are talking about. What truly makes something rare in the watch collecting community is based on manufactured numbers, demand and maker. For example I could have a Timex in my possession that could be the only one left on earth but if no one is interested in it then it may be "rare" but that doesn't make it valuable. I do hope this makes sense and helps explain a few things.

*Sigh*

You can find some "looks like" Waltham easily...

Also, with a very punctilious search... You will find the same dial, the same case, in spare parts lots...

For all of you interested in this watch, I suggest you to search with other key words...
The Waltham brand is not a well known one... So, in the auction, people will give it the name of "vintage watch".
Also, I suggest you to do a search with the key words "wristwatch lot", or "vintage watch lot"... You will have a better chance to find one in a lot, but you will play at "where's Wally" when there is 73 watches in the lot !

To finish, I also suggest you to change the ebay country sometimes.
Use the . at , .fr , .de , .es , .it, .ir , .co.uk, .au etc...
The same for an internet search, using the foreigns yahoo website, the .de, .fr , .it , etc.....
(There is not only eBay for the auctions, every country have also a specific website for it, and you may catch the watch one day... For the rest, it's up to you for the translation ... But there is a lot of members here who will be glad to help you).
For the translation of watch :
Fr : Montre
Es : Reloj
It : Orlogio
De : Uhr

It's also useful for the alysa doll you are all looking for...

I found an approximative 2004 one in France... I tried to help you guys, negociating, saying that my daughter had the same... she lost it at the airport one day, etc... (I have no child :lol )

But it was an old lady who wanted to sell it to another advised collector !!
Damn !

So, keep hope alive !

Like someone else said, I'm not worried about anyone hoarding them, but just being able to get one at a decent price now that more people will be bidding and looking. But, yes , I do think the ones on ebay recently sold for what they did because of the people here on the boards trying to outbid each other.

Well, this is BS. I was bidding on that watch. No wonder it spiked so high in price; someone posted it on here. Anyway, I dropped the ball on a "close enough" watch that I found on Bonanza. It was made by Waltham as well. It had different hour markers, however. I like it. It encompasses my style better anyway.

Still, kudos to DarkPassenger for the legwork he did quite a while ago. I still appreciate that you shared with me which watch it was prior to it becoming public.

R.I.P. any chance on hell or earth of me getting this watch for under $500.

I'm very sorry to everyone who was PMed, or Pmed me. I tried to keep it off the forums, but some people have different feelings on the info, which is fine. (I guess :unsure).

Apparently my Secret Watch Society wasn't so much of a secret if I rarely turned away members. The only time I turned away the info, was last week when there was 2 on eBay to stop a bidding war. (Which happened anyway).

And, I barely did any leg work. My contact in the Wardrobe Department told me a brand name, and I just Google-Fu'ed my ass of to find what model it was.

Good luck to everyone who wants one, and don't lose hope. They'll pop up.

I think some of us here are missing the point of the RPF, which is, first and foremost, to collaborate! I mean read the slogan at the top of the page!

Now I can certainly understand the frustration of being outbid on an item. I've been there a million times myself. But to blame it on a post on this forum...? I'm glad people think so highly of this place, but really..?

What if you had been the one looking for the watch originally, but all you found was this thread with a bunch of, "I know what it is, but I'm not telling!" posts? How frustrated would you have been?

I just hope some of you don't need any help with any of your future projects. I think you may find people around here are certainly happy to repay a favor, but may not be so helpful in light of what's gone on here.

So good luck to ya...

Sean

Egads.....all this gloom and doom from you guys. Have a little faith and patience. Pictured below here is a watch lot I obtained recently I'm still going thru which is typical of what I find in my travels.......I think theres over 200lbs of watches here. Like I said before....." I see more watches in a matter of weeks than most see in years" ....figure of speech of course but just to make a point.....so I'm sure I'll find some of these watches.....no promises but I'll try....always keeping my eyes open. :confused

I never told anyone I was not telling. I told people they would have to wait (until the auction was over). I replied to tons of PMS asking what it was with detailed pictures and comparison text. I have shared EVERYGODDAMNTHING I have found publicly (see Kill Tool thread, G-star Pants, Vera's Urn, Trinity's Hammer). Stop judging me with this "I know and I'm not telling" typecast. It is not true at all on my part and infuriates me to be grouped into that.

Good day.
